Cape Town - After Craig Joubert sounded the final whistle in the Rugby World Cup semi-final between Australia and New Zealand, fans of both the All Blacks and France went into a frenzy.
There are still a few tickets still available to the public through official suppliers, but are running out fast, although more are expected to be made available as ticket allocations to teams is finalised, such as those for hospitality packages.
“Some of them are pretty keen to get going and there's been a steady stream. We have a limited number of packages, and I expect that by the end of Tuesday we will probably be out,” retail travel director, Brent Thomas told the New Zealand Herald.
Tickets being sold by travel agencies must be packaged with travel or accommodation.
Thomas said accommodation in Auckland was limited, but the agency still had hotel rooms priced from $300 (R1 905) to $350 (R2 222) a night up to penthouse suites at NZ$1 500 (R9 522) a night.
The expected mad rush for tickets before the World Cup final as brought another wave of opportunist to the fore as ticket ‘scalpers’ are hoping to cash in on those desperate enough to pay over-the-top prices for tickets to rugby’s showpiece in Auckland.
The New Zealand Herald further reports that many Welsh and Australian fans were spotted in central Auckland with makeshift signs offering tickets to the final.
Other tickets have been made available online, some for as much as NZ$3 500 (R22 220) per set, with a value of less than half the asking price.
"My team are unfortunately out of the World Cup and after having enjoyed an awesome weekend watching them in Wellington, we will not be making use of these finals tickets," the seller says.
About 12 000 tickets are left for the bronze final, when a crowd of about 50 000 is expected at Eden Park.
