Habana in race against time

Cape Town - Springbok wing Bryan Habana is struggling with a slight hamstring injury which could rule him out of their Rugby World Cup opener against Wales.

According to Die Burger newspaper, Habana did not take part in the Boks' field training session at Rugby League Park in Wellington on Monday.

Francois Hougaard practiced on the left wing and will start in that position against Wales if Habana fails to recover.

The injury does not seem to be too serious, as Habana ran without any discomfort next to the training field on Monday. He sustained the injury in practice last week in Johannesburg before South Africa boarded for New Zealand.

Habana is currently the joint-record holder of the most Springboks tries (38), which he shares with Joost van der Westhuizen, and has a good chance of becoming the sole holder of that record in the coming weeks.

The Stormers wing was, however, skeptical when asked by Die Burger if he could break the record against the Welsh, which indicates he might miss the game on Sunday.

"I though I would have broken the record a long time ago, but first I have to be picked and if that's the case I would like to contribute in a positive manner - whether on the attack, defence or through my workrate," said Habana.

Bok coach Peter de Villiers will announce his side on Friday.
