The Boks tackle the Islanders in their last Pool D clash at the North Harbour Stadium on Friday - a game in which they need at least a bonus point to ensure qualification to the quarter-finals.

But Steenkamp says they won't approach the game like that and will go all out for the win.

"This is a first knockout round for us. The second phase of the tournament starts here," Steenkamp told the Beeld newspaper.

The prop - who will join French outfit Toulouse at the end of the World Cup - knows what part he needs to play on Friday.

"My role as substitute on Friday will be to increase the intensity when I come on.

"Not only do I need to get over the advantage line as ball-carrier, but I must also make sure my tackles are felt (by the Samoans).

"And then I obviously need to fulfil my basic tasks in the scrums and lineouts."

Steenkamp also shed more light on how the South Africans will go about countering the expected physical onslaught form Samoa.

"You have to go in harder than them. When a Samoan knocks the wind out of your sails, you have to get up and ensure you run him down with your next ball-carry. There's no other way. The harder they come at you, the harder you must give back."
