Whangarei - Firefighters were called to an alarming blaze just outside Whangarei's packed Northland Events Centre on Wednesday during the Rugby World Cup match between Japan and Tonga.
Large flames appeared behind the stadium's busy terraces about 25 minutes into the second half. But the stadium announcer said there was no need for concern and the blaze seemed to subside before the final whistle.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the fire is not a danger to patrons," the stadium announcer said. "The fire department is on its way."
The incident did not appear to worry spectators as Tonga won 31-18.
