Bloemfontein - There is a strong possibility that Os du Randt will accompany Ireland’s rugby team as scrum coach to this year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
However, it's not an easy decision for the 38-year-old gentle giant.
The former Springbok scrumming consultant on Tuesday also revealed that the Cheetahs were considering extending his contract by another three years.
His current Cheetahs contract expires after this year's Super Rugby competition.
"I have a number of decisions to make,' admitted Du Randt.
"Ireland will be a short-term move. If I sign with the Cheetahs it will be a long-term decision. I'm still negotiating with Ireland and the Cheetahs, but hope to soon make a final decision."
While Du Randt views it an honour to help Ireland, his family commitments will make it hard to lure him away if the Cheetahs are serious about keeping him.
Ireland made contact with Du Randt's agent, Mike de Haast, after the South African Rugby Union (SARU) were not eager to extend his contract this year.
The Irish are looking to improve on their scrumming and will have taken note of the good work Du Randt has done with props Coenie Oosthuizen and WP Nel at the Cheetahs.
Du Randt said that the move will be made easier by the presence of former Springbok assistant coach Gert Smal on the Ireland management team should he decide to accept their offer. Smal is an assistant coach with Ireland and still coached Du Randt at the 2007 World Cup.
"I believe I will also learn something new there as scrumming is important in Europe."
There is a chance that Ireland will play the Springboks in the quarter-finals of this year's World Cup. That scenario will transpire if Ireland finish second in Group C and the Boks top Group D.
