Cape Town - England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson had one of the worst kicking games of his career against Argentina in their opening match of the Rugby World Cup and is now 10/1 to be the leading points scorer by the end of the tournament.
One man who had a decent day at the office was New Zealand flyhalf Dan Carter, who many believe is the key to the All Blacks winning their second World Cup title.
With the bookies backing New Zealand to go all the way in the tournament, it makes sense then that the man who would be key to taking them to the pinnacle of world rugby would be the favourite at 18/10 to end the tournament as the top points scorer.
It also seems that the bookies have been doing their research around the Springboks’ kicking gameplan and have flyhalf Morne Steyn as second favourite at 3/1 whilst Australia’s young and exciting back James O’Connor also comes in at 3/1; whether he will have the full-time kicking duties in the Wallaby side is debatable as Quade Cooper is also in the mix.
Cooper himself might be good value for a punter at 25/1 due to his try-scoring ability whilst France’s kicking machine Dimitri Yachvili is down at 7/1 to end the tournament as the top points scorer.
