With Heinrich Brüssow excelling as a fetcher in the Bok No 6 jumper, and Pierre Spies looking outstanding at eightman, Burger may have to fill Juan Smith's place by wearing the No 7 on his back during rugby's showpiece event.
Willem Alberts could then be used as a key impact player from the bench.
The tournament starts on September 9, with the Boks playing their first game against Wales on September 11 in Wellington.
Burger admitted to the Rapport newspaper that he is unsure of his place in the Springboks' starting line-up, but would be fine playing in the No 7 jersey.
"I am comfortable at seven and have played everywhere in the loose-trio, so I would not mind it at all," said Burger.
"You have to play where you are used.
The Stormers captain says the uncertainty about where he will play does not bother him and he's willing to slot in at any position the team would need him.
"It's probably not a bad thing about being unsure where you will play, but it really doesn't matter. I have my own style and enjoy my rugby.
"In the end it will depend on the balance of the team and which combination will be the best for that," said Burger.
