Muller: Boks can topple Kiwis

2011-08-17 13:08

Cape Town - Former Springbok centre Pieter Muller believes that South Africa can win the Rugby World Cup even if they have to face the All Blacks in the semi-finals.

Muller played 33 Tests for South Africa, including four World Cup matches, and ended his career with a 22-19 victory over the All Blacks in the third place playoff of the 1999 World Cup.

The Springboks have lost nine of the 17 Test matches they have played since June last year, and have looked increasing less likely to become the first team to retain the Webb Ellis cup.

However, according to Sky Sports, Muller believes that the team cannot be ruled out because of their experience.

"It is going to be difficult but I think there is so much experience in the South Africa side it just depends on the guys getting up for it and performing," Muller is reported to have said.

"I think we will be up there again but our only problem will be New Zealand in the semi-finals. South Africa can beat them on home soil as we have shown in the past and in the World Cup, just a small margin or that one moment of genius can win it.”

South Africa have been grouped with Wales, Samoa, Fiji and Namibia in Pool D of the tournament, while New Zealand have been grouped with Canada, Tonga, France and Japan in Pool A.

The teams will face each other in the semi-finals whether they qualified for the quarter-finals as runners-up or group winners.

Muller added that home ground advantage could turn out to be a negative for New Zealand because of the immense pressure they will be under.

Pieter, I think you are living in a dreamworld, lets 1st see what happens on Saturday and go from there

      Ryan Tunney - 2011-08-17 20:21

The Boks will come out guns blazing for the first 20 minutes or so and by the second half will have run out of ideas and steam. It's a sad state of affairs.....PDiv has ruined the team. There is no confidence, no plan, no pride.

  • Tools1 - 2011-08-17 13:41

Jeez dudes you are so negative.. and rightly so, but its like you sit and wait for an article to apear and them pounce on it and blast the crap out of every positive thing said. DO some work.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-17 13:45

@Tools1 - The English fans were negative before the 2007 World Cup.....their coach, Ashton, was in way over his head and there were 36 years old men in that team....They got skinned by the Boks in the pool game, then went on to play in the final.....and I reckon this should be the lesson for all the truly negative folk. I am just curious...will those people crucifying the Boks before the WC has even started, celebrate and party in the streets if the 2011 Boks pull a 2007 England out of the hat?

      cheetahkonin - 2011-08-17 13:54

@SAFFA - I too want to see what the "no chance in hell" bunch have to say if we indeed make the semi's or final like I really believe we can. Can't stand everyone jumping on the crucify the boks band wagon and if we do well, they will all be proud supporters again!!!

      jk - 2011-08-17 14:09

saffa- you cannot compare neil back and richard hill and johnson to spies and smittie, that english team knew exactly waht they were doing and where they were going, unlike the sircus we have at present. we not negative, but at one point one should be realistic

      Tools1 - 2011-08-17 14:11

My point exactly i had a dop at work the other day and a guy that works with me started lambasting Danie Rossouw. Saying he is useless and his mother should have killed him at birth.... This guy has achieved so much and done so much for his country....and what have these people with so much to say achieved? But boy if he is man of the mach in a WC final.......

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-17 14:13

@cheetahkonin - Indeed! I am not blind to the various 'problems' we currently have, but I know for a fact our team can beat any team in the world in a one off game. Those that refuse to believe this, should go and watch highlights of the '07 World Cup again. The negative folk should also watch a few of the other nations warm-up games (I have watched them all) France were iffy against Ireland last week (even though they won) and Lievremont has made 13 changes to his team this week or something ridiculous like that. Ireland dropped Johnny Sexton after Scotland beat them, and played O Gara against France. England won with Wilkinson at 10 against Wales, but lost with Flood at 10 last Saturday. The only settled teams with any 'form' entering the WC are the Wobblies and AB's - but are we going to write off France and England in the same way people are writing off SA? Doubtful.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-17 14:36

@jk - Those chaps were the 2003 England team. I am talking about the 2007 bunch. There were a few remnants of the 2003 team yes, but not Johnson and Back etc. Wilko was there, Catt was there at 36 yrs old (I think) etc etc. Then they had that Andy Farrell league convert and a few few younger chaps. I'm just saying that one can not simply ignore the fact that our starting players are experienced and KNOW how to win.

      Marx - 2011-08-17 14:38

The easiest thing to do in life is to be negative, specially in these kind of circumstances, the coach, some of the players etc. In my humble opinion I do feel that we have the players and the potential to go and beat the AB's on their home ground and to bring back the Gold. What this team needs now is the total support of everyone in this country, even if your favourite provincial players aren't there. The thing is, these players don't select themselves, I can't think that one of them is going to the WC not to win it and as frustrated as I can get with Div, it's now time to get behind our boys, win or lose, and stop all this negative sh*t, or rather be silent if you don't have anything positive to add.

      Marx - 2011-08-17 14:47

Saffa, I stated the other day that the '07 England side showed that all you really need is the "will" to go out against all odds, and do the unexpected. This is exactly where our guys are know, most of this squad beat the Aussies and AB's in the '09 Tri Series, there is no reason why we can't do it again, and I truely believe we will go and do it, as long as the referee's doesn't go and make it impossible, and I have the feeling they will blow in favour of the AB's in all the 50/50 calls, so it's gonna be tough!!

      Oukoos - 2011-08-17 15:10

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-17 16:05

@Oukoos - ek self het die afgelope 2 jare 'unbearable' gevind as 'n Bok supporter. Ek weet daar is vrae, groot vrae en groot worries. Daarvoor is ek nie blind nie, belowe. When P De Villiers asked the senior players after the B&I Lions tour in 2009, if they wanted OUT then, or of they thought they had it in them to last until the 2011 WC - all those chaps answered yes. I know it hasn't looked like it - but I still believe each one of those men has the heart, the will, the experience and the physical ability to succeed at the WC. It's 7 games they have to commit to - then it's over. For that period of time, I believe they can pull together, and create something special. I believe the players when they said they can do it way back in 2009 already. If they stuff up badly - then I have been fooled and 'lied to' (as a fan) by some of the finest rugga players of this generation. du Preez, Matfield, Jaque, Schalk, Bakkies, John etc. I'm willing to put my faith in them, as a last hoorah.

      MaestroX - 2011-08-17 16:38

Marx, now I 100% support what you are saying above!!! We have great heart, determination and experience, we may not have as many skilled players as the AB currently but we have enough, what we do have more of is BMT!!

  • Zeppie - 2011-08-17 13:45

    Pieter wat rook jy

  • Tools1 - 2011-08-17 13:45

I realy believe the Boks can win Saterdays game, I know weve heard all the excuses in the book.. but Aus didnt do too well their first game back. and some of the Boks hadnt played for two years. Give the guys another chance lets leave the negativity till Monday if we loose.

  • TribalSoul - 2011-08-17 13:49

More talk and action. I hope to see a day where articles like these are just not published! Leave the talk and rather show us it can be done. Its really silly dudes!

      Daniel - 2011-08-17 14:04

What will your ideal sports section look like? Match reports on Monday and then nothing for the rest of the week? .

  • dansa - 2011-08-17 13:50

Who says we will be in the semi against them, we might not get that far!

  • patrickb - 2011-08-17 13:57

One small problem with this argument............ We won't make the semi's!

  • StaalBurgher - 2011-08-17 13:58

Of course we can win. It still doesn't excuse the disaster that has gone before.

      jk - 2011-08-17 14:24

      we cannot win it...

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-17 16:14

Now jk that is WP's problem, you are case in point. Staal I agree we can win the world cup. Go Bokke!

  • ne0 - 2011-08-17 14:10

The guys havent played for a while, they just need to gel and it should be saturdays game for them to do this. Then one game at a time in the WC and I think we can retain it. We have experience we have bismark and heinrich.. The only thing I think we dont have is a proper brain for substitutions..

  • Totman - 2011-08-17 14:23

It seams they phone everyone for a comment to place it here for us to read and therefore collecting more clicks to maintain the readers revel. None of them are saying anything new. You can copy and paste and just change the X Springbok's name. We then just repeating our comments again and again. They could have made all's comments in one article. Wow, must be a slow day in the newsrooms!!!

      jk - 2011-08-17 14:35

tottieman- stop being a bitch, and rather support wp rugby

      Totman - 2011-08-17 14:40

I am not so desperate yet! lol.

      jk - 2011-08-17 14:44

thats not what you said last night...

      Totman - 2011-08-17 14:51

Ha, ha, ha! My neighbors in Cape Town wanted to convince me as well and I will give them credit, because they manage to "stole" my coach, but when Cheetahs plays my heart is pounding. I do support them when not playing against my team. No laughs hey! We getting there. I realized not all know quality when seeing it and therefore have a lot of patients for supporters of other teams.LOL!

      jk - 2011-08-17 14:56

totman- good to see you a true supporter... ignore kok, maori, bulldozer, blueraven, bakkebul on here, they all scum

      Totman - 2011-08-17 15:13

I presume everyone loves his team and wanted to lay an egg. It is there right, but they love to get personal...or let me say some of them. I must say sometime they let me laugh and that helps a bit with all this negative info and happenings we get fed with everyday. Kokkie gives me an impression of a bitter person with an identity problem. [Come on kokkie, shout for the Boks!lol] Maori can sometimes be very one-track mind, but if the emotion is taken away you can pick up a point here and there. Bulldozer dozer everything ahead of him and can be very good, but sometimes very one-eye sited.[ Stop using your short turn brake ] blueraven were rough in the begin, but the cereal he eats in the mornings help and he slowly improves. Not much knowledge on bakkebul. All said with a tongue in the cheek. Still like them all. LOL! Enjoy the afternoon jk & you all. I need to go and fetch my boss.[daughter]

      jk - 2011-08-17 15:30

raven wat sy pap begon eet net jammer dit werk nie

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-17 16:07

jk begon?... daai spraakprobleem wat jy het begin nou regtig erg raak... ek dink jy moet spraakterapie oorweeg. @Totman I had it all this morning :)

  • Chief Kok - 2011-08-17 14:48

Pieter is right: Boks can topple Kiwis - Maybe in the next decade.

      jk - 2011-08-17 15:01

      only in world cups...

      Oukoos - 2011-08-17 15:16

As soon as PdeV is replaced by a coach, appointed on merit and not on skin color. And yes, it may take a decade for the penny to drop

      MaestroX - 2011-08-17 16:43

Yip, after all, how many time have the AB beaten the boks in the WC? 0 out of 2!! BMT the only thing the AB know about BMT is when they order it on their pizza, Bacon Mushroom and Tomatoes!

  • Shuffle - 2011-08-17 14:54

"The teams will face each other in the semi-finals whether they qualified for the quarter-finals as runners-up or group winners" I think not, can someone explain this?

      Gustav - 2011-08-17 15:15

Schuffle they are crazy mate. If the AB lose to France they will go to the other side of the draw and play Aus is semi

  • The Tank - 2011-08-17 15:06

Relax all, the Boks might just pull a rabbit out of the hat, then he will smile and have the last laugh, it is not impossible, unlikely perhaps, but not impossible. The Springbok is dangerous when wounded.....

  • BardofAvon - 2011-08-17 15:09

It will be poetic justice and and no small irony if the South Africans beat the New Zealanders in the semis - the New Zealandrs are the chokers of world rugby, and the South Africans are the chokers of world cricket. And they will both have done what they do best. Wilt under pressure... heh heh...!

  • Exzim - 2011-08-17 15:21

Who is this Muller chap, what is he smoking and where does he get it? The All Blacks are awesome and can't miss in this year's World Cup!

      MaestroX - 2011-08-17 16:45

Hmmm Exzim and I guess you have played rugby at this level and understand what it’s all about? 33 test for SA, wins against the AB's, probably knows just a little more than you....just guessing!

      FJ2 - 2011-08-17 17:32

It's that Muller cap who tackled the AB's (and most other teams) to pieces. The one who intimidated Jonah Lomu into being impotent in every post-'97 games against SA. The one who cut Horan and Little down to size. It's that Muller chappie.

  • Waldez - 2011-08-17 15:24

Pieter i think you bluff yourself wake up and smell the roses

  • Mal Moer - 2011-08-17 15:33

You must be the only genius with an IQ of 60. Were your parents siblings?

  • gsaker1 - 2011-08-17 15:40

When is anyone in SA going to figure out that the All Blacks have less pressure playing at home than anywhere. Best home record in the world...over 92% win record at home under Graham Henry...and they won the World Cup at home....come on guys wake up..the All Blacks ironically are under less pressure at home...don't ask me why but they just are and the stats back that up...

  • Kevin van Dyk - 2011-08-17 15:53

New Zealand have to get past France first ...

  • Andrew - 2011-08-17 16:27

All things are possible, but not all things are probable. The nature of a supporter is that the faintest glimmer of hope puts a twinkle in the eye. The problem is that we have more obstacles to overcome than we would ideally want. These are internal factors and not external, forget the AB's etc. - We have to start winning QUICK, we are in desperate need of some self belief. - We need to get out of denial. Divvy stating that we won the Aus game but for the scoreboard. An ugly win remains a win, a pretty loss is still a loss. - Our experienced players are great but I believe lack the physicality of the younger men over 80 min. The playing conditions (turf) will not favour the Boks or the Aussies, I think they will keep the grass a little longer. - Divvy needs to learn how to play his bench effectively. - We need to finalise our starting 15, we are still not sure, we have to have a nucleus. - Our combinations need to start firing, Jean and Jaque, Fourie and Morne, the front row, our locks. - Our ball handling needs to improve soon, both in terms of fielding passes and in terms of retaining in the tackle. - We need a play maker, we need Fourie to be in spectacular form. - Morne needs some confidence. Where other teams have pretty much got this down pat by now we are still experimenting, I get the feeling that we are about 4 - 6 weeks behind the program. Of course we can win but we have reduced the probability through our own poor handling of the Boks in the last two years.

      MaestroX - 2011-08-17 16:47

      Well said mate

  • Contemplate - 2011-08-17 17:13

For so-called Springbok supporters we really ARE a dismal bunch! If any fan's idea of "supporting" is synonymous with "denigrating" then possibly that 'fan' doesn't DESERVE to wear the supporters kit? Sure it's fantastic being a supporter when we win; tougher when we lose - but for some, it's 100% Green & Gold ALL the time. Go Bokke!

      Rugganut - 2011-08-17 17:52

Here here Contemplate. They could field 15 of SA's best woman basketball players and I would still support my country!!! GO BOKKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Andrew - 2011-08-17 18:02

Don't confuse "supporting" with "a tactical appreciation for the current circumstances". I will scream myself hoarse on Saturday but that does mean I need to remain blissfully ignorant of the Boks current form and track record. Rugby supporters have screamed their heads off for the past two years now with less success than we would like. So scream all you want, as I will, we scream we win, we scream we loose. The constant has been the poor form of our team, this a scream cannot change but will not stop me from trying.

  • What de D... - 2011-08-17 19:43

    posop vir Namibia!!!

  • LeDuke - 2011-08-17 20:55

everybody thinks the boks have a easy pool but from watching wales play england and beating them and samoa beating australia i dont think the boks will have it as easy as everybody thinks the side as it is now have to bring their A game for every game in the tournament but i think the coaching staff of the boks are realy underestimating our fellow pool teams if they think we will be playing in the quarters already and div thinks we only lost on the scoreboard hes having a laugh.

  • Henry - 2011-08-17 22:15

Please admit that our rugby has hit the bottom. The All Blacks B team is going to smash us on Saturday and Pieter de Villers is leaving nothing behind to build on. The poor coach will be in the some stuation as Pine Pienaar at the Blue Bulls. Nothing left behind to work with.

  • Robert - 2011-08-17 23:12

I think Peter Muller is wanting a job carrying Divs bags to New Zealand with commenst like that. I am really looking forward to seeing Samoa smashing into South Africa they will take out at least three of your players for the World Cup. Really looking forward to the game on Saturday even though we dont have our best team on the park quite confident we can over come the Boks. Mainly because we are a team, we are fit, and we have better skills across the park. Oh ,and I didnt even mention the coaching . Just love the way the coloured people over there support our All Blacks its fantastic

  • ikey_tiger - 2011-08-18 01:07

i hate the fact that everybody is already talking about the semi-finals!!! we have a ridiculously hard group to win first of all.. and remember the previous world cup? NZ didnt even make the semi's.. anything can happen, we should rather prepare for the group matches before we start talking about the AB's in the semi's..

  • blanco_pta - 2011-08-18 01:55

boks winning against all blacks is a blatant day dream
