Bok trio face fitness race

Cape Town - Three members of the Springbok squad are currently being treated for niggling injuries, but the medical team is hopeful they will be fit for selection to face Australia on Saturday at Newlands in Cape Town.

Gurthrö Steenkamp (AC joint), Flip van der Merwe (hamstring) and JJ Engelbrecht (quad muscle) all picked up bumps in the Test against New Zealand in Auckland last weekend.

Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said while none of these injuries are too serious, the players will be carefully managed in the coming days.

“Gurthrö and JJ trained with the squad on Monday morning, although they did not do the entire session,” said Dr Roberts.

“Flip didn’t train on Monday, but he’s already improved a lot since the match in Auckland and we’ll give him all the time he needs to fully recover.”

The Springbok team to face Australia will be named on Wednesday afternoon.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
