Cape Town - Springbok prop Frans Malherbe will be sidelined for the rest of the year after sustaining a serious injury to his right ankle against Argentina at the weekend.
As it happened: Argentina v SA
The 23-year-old replaced a struggling Jannie du Plessis in the Test in Salta but limped off in the 79th minute.
According to the supersport.com website, Malherbe has fractured his ankle and will undergo surgery, possibly as soon as Tuesday.
Team doctor Craig Roberts confirmed the injury and said Malherbe’s season is over.
“Unluckily in the last minute of the game his ankle got caught in a ruck and he twisted it. It kind of got caught in the turf and he ended up fracturing his ankle,” said Roberts.
Roberts said the injury should rule the WP prop out until the middle of November.
“It depends how well the surgery goes, but we’re looking at three months. Effectively that is the year gone for him. I was putting it into the calendar last night and it takes him into the middle of the end of the year tour, so it is the year for him,” he added.
The Boks won the Test against the Pumas 33-31.
