Port Elizabeth - A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death following an alleged scuffle over a rugby tackle on a playground at a school in Willowmore on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.

The boy was part of a group playing an informal game of rugby around 20:00 at the school when he allegedly tackled a 14-year-old boy too hard, Captain Ernest Sigobe said.

This sparked a fight between them.

The 14-year-old left the grounds and allegedly returned with a bread knife and stabbed the older boy.

The victim, a Grade 9 learner at the school, died on the way to hospital.

The 14-year-old, who was in Grade 7, was arrested and would appear in the Willowmore Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder on Friday.
