London - Former British rugby league international Terry Newton, the first athlete in any sport to fail a test for Human Growth Hormone (HGH), was found dead on Sunday at the age of 31, the BBC reported.
Newton was banned for two years after testing positive for HGH in an out-of-competition test in November, 2009. He was subsequently sacked by his club Wakefield.
The positive test was hailed as a breakthrough in the war against doping by anti-drugs campaigners.
"Shortly after 14:00 on Sunday, September 26, 2010, police were called to a house on Harswell Close in Orrell, Wigan, following a report of concern for welfare," a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said.
"Officers went to the address and found the body of a 31-year-old man. Inquiries have been launched but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."
The former star was found hanged at his home. A devoted father of two young girls was thought to have become distraught after being told that his marriage was over.
