Cape Town - Vodacom Super 14 matches at FIFA World Cup venues will use advanced television technology as part of an agreement between rugby and soccer authorities to assist pitch management.

On-field branding will be digitally ‘projected’ onto the television image as the result of a co-operation between SARU, broadcaster SuperSport and sponsor Vodacom. The Vodacom Bulls’ home match with the Highlanders at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday will be the first match to apply the technology.

“I received a request from the FIFA LOC (Local Organising Committee) to assist them by removing on-field advertising in Vodacom Super 14 matches at World Cup venues as they were concerned about the damage it might cause to the playing surface,” said Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union.

“My immediate response was that we would do everything in our power to help the LOC and as a result of that, together with our sponsor Vodacom and SuperSport, we have been able to come up with a solution.”

The system will be in operation at Coca-Cola Park and Vodacom Park as well as Loftus – venues for FIFA World Cup matches – but television viewers should notice minimal differences in the appearance of the branding. However, those who attend matches will experience the novelty of a ‘clean’ field. All five branded areas on the field will be projected onto the television coverage.

The technology is already in use in sporting codes overseas – where onfield branding is forbidden in some sports – but this is the first time it will have been used in South Africa. The Absa Stadium Durban and Newlands in Cape Town are unaffected by the change.

“There has been a lot of hard work at short notice and I’d like to thank Vodacom and SuperSport for their support,” said Hoskins. “We are fully behind our friends at soccer and we hope this assistance will help them deliver the ideal World Cup.”

Yeah, i also am not for changing of stadium names. And about the on-field marketing, it's good that the rugby board welcomed the request.

did I just hear someone saying that names shouldnt be changed because its part of History? isnt that the argument Gwede Manashe used to defent Malemas struggle song?

The whole branding thing gets my goat too. I call the Stormers the Stormers, not the voad-whatever stormers. Its just silly. They have Vodacom right across their chests, Vodacom everywhere, its actually patronising that the team needs to be called that. Obviously, same goes for the other teams. The Aus and Kiwi teams dont have it, so why do we have to llok like children? Branding shoved down the throat, non-stop. Puke. I mean Twatson

Denis, Denis, you're preaching to the converted. After the hand of frog nobody can dispute the importance of technology to improve decision making, especially if the ball is out of play. But it's not in SA's sphere of influence to proppose or even campaign for it. We won the WC rights and were protected from much critisism because of one Sepp Blatter, the main obstacle to technology in football. Ours is just to shut up and be gratful to FIFA for coming here and having a party at our expense.

ELLIS PARK TO ME WILL REMAIN ELLIS PARK FOR AS LONG AS I SHALL BE AROUND. SOMETIMES I THINK THESE POEPOLLE JUST GO AROUND AND CHANGE NAMES JUST TO PISS SUPPORTERS OFF. COCA COLA PARK SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF JARASIC PARK

Its a pity that soccer administrators are too primitive to accept video technology to confirm spot-kick, offside, and card decisions. I predict at least one semi-final and at least one quarter final as well as a few critical pool matches will be decided by incorrect decisions in these areas, just like in the last 2 world cups. South Africe has missed an opportunity to drag FIFA into the 21st century with our experience in this technology.

Good move, those pitches will need to be perfect for the WC. Ellis Park especially was a disgrace during the Confed Cup. Just hope the the Bulls have started making plans for what to do if they host a Super 14 semi or final. @Tee-Tot, I also hate sponsered names, but sadly that is now a trend in sports stadiums.

For 100 million pound manu would change the staduims name without even a second thought, just as you have the Emirites staduim who was paid a simular fee for naming rights for 10 years, MONEY TALKS

@ Tee-Tot, They just do not learn. When Loftus' name was changed to some security firm the fans were up in arms. Fortunately the name has been restored. It will be a cold day in hell before I refer to Ellis Park as Coca-Cola Park. I now feel quite resentful towards Coke. Even ABSA Park annoys me. It is Kings Park. Finish and Klaar.

Good thing that, but they could do away with the on-field branding altogether. We all know that the corporate sponsors bankroll sports and are within their right to demand maximum exposure, but too much branding is crass and alienates fans. Like calling Ellis park Coca-Cola and Bloem Vodacom. These grounds have historic names and must be refered to with such. Imagine if Old Trafford was changed to the IEG stadium or even Vodafone Stadium beforehand.
