Stellenbosch - The KZN champions College Rovers have qualified for the SAA National Club Championship final following their deserving 33-14 victory over NWU-Pukke in their semifinal clash at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Wednesday.
There was an element of revenge, because Pukke beat them in the Rovers 2006 and 2008 finals. Friday's final appearance will be only their third in a championship showdown.
Their victory tally was made up of five tries and Pukke, the 2004, 2006 and 2008 champs were never in contention except for a brief spell midway through the first half when they ran in two converted tries.
Rovers will now meet the winner of the Maties - Hamilton clash in Friday's final to decide the destiny of the 2010 championship.
The usually structured Pukke play was not in evidence in the early stages and it looked as though they were surprised by Rovers' hard-running approach straight from the kick-off.
In the opening 12 minutes Pukke battled to impose themselves on the game and just when it looked as if they were succeeding, a Rovers break-out from deep inside their own half ended in the first try of the match, scored by Rovers leftwing Anton Verster.
Pukke were never given time to catch their breath in the ensuing minutes as Rovers ran in two more tries to round off a prolific scoring frenzy which yielded 21 points after flyhalf Wes Dunlop converted all three touchdowns.
Flank Kosie Haarhof and Jerome Pretorius scored the two tries (21-0).
This massive setback did not seem to deter Pukke, judging by the way they stormed back into the picture with two tries in the space of five minutes and it looked at that stage as if they could salvage the match.
Eigththman Jean Pretorius and lock Dirco Rautenbach notched the tries, both of which were converted by fullback Theuns Kotze (21-14).
But it turned out to be the last time Pukke troubled the scoreboard and Rovers centre Rudi Keil scored a try on either side of the halftime break to add to their misery, with Dunlop succeeding with one conversion attempt (33-14).
Scorers:
College Rovers:
Tries: Rudi Keil (2), Jerome Pretorius, Anton Verster, Kosie Haarhof. Conversions: Wes Dunlop (4).
NWU-Pukke:
Tries: Jean Pretorius, Dirco Rautenbach. Conversions: Theuns Kotze (2).
