Ref's jaw-breaker to be heard

Bloemfontein - The disciplinary hearing of a Free State club rugby player who allegedly broke a referee's jaw during a match will take place on Thursday evening.

Free State Rugby Union CEO Gerda van Solms on Wednesday said the Police club player's hearing would start at 5pm.

Police and the rugby union announced last week they were investigating a player's allegedly assaulting referee EK King, breaking his jaw in two places and knocking out two teeth. King was punched in the final minutes of the second league club game between Police and the Defence Force at Bobbies Park in Bloemfontein last week Tuesday.

The Free State Rugby Union said in a statement a Police club player allegedly assaulted King in the scoring area just before the final whistle. King was admitted to hospital afterwards.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Annelie Wrench said a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm had been laid.

In another incident, two referees were allegedly assaulted at another second league game between Warriors I and Mangaung I at Schoeman's Park last weekend.

Referee Milton Bolawa and his assistant Christian Shuping were allegedly attacked by various Warriors players during Saturday's game.

The Free State Rugby Union was also investigating this.
