Port Elizabeth – Controversial Springbok loose forward Pedrie Wannenburg may soon run out for Eastern Province.
Rugby officials at EP did not want to name Wannenburg on Wednesday, but admitted that they were trying to lure “a Springbok from the Blue Bulls” to Port Elizabeth.
“You can speculate. You won’t get a name from me,” said EP Rugby Union chief executive Anele Pamba.
A source from inside the EPRU said that feelers had been put out to Wannenburg a few days ago.
This follows the bombshell earlier in the week when he admitted to having had drug and alcohol problems a while ago.
Sport24 understands that EP are interested in a loan deal for a short period only. This will apparently help to relieve the pressure on Wannenburg while simultaneously being a big boost for the Elephants.
The Elephants’ leading No 8, Lubabalo Mzwakali, is struggling with a shoulder injury.
The EP selectors now have a problem as there is not a specialist No 8 among the other contracted loose forwards.
Flanker Elroy Ligman, who regularly plays as a No 8, is struggling with a groin injury.
There was talk that last year’s big find at flank, Jacques Potgieter, may move to No 8. However, he is training with the Stormers and may be included in their squad.
Another flank - Sivuyile Kobokana – will be tested at No 8 on Monday when EP play the Madibaz in a training game at the NMMU Stadium.
A number of newcomers in the EP squad will then have a chance of staking a claim.
EP also play a warm-up game against the Cheetahs at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next Saturday and other newcomers such as Justin Peach and flanker Zolani Mofu are likely to be in action then.
Pamba said that captain De Wet Barry, who had trained with the Bulls for a while, may be back for this clash. It appears as if Barry will only be called up by the Bulls in the event of an injury.
The EP team against the Madibaz:
Ryan Brown, Christopher Juries, Braam Gerber, Alfonso Pietersen, Eckard Jacobs, Curtis Sias, Sinethemba Jack, Sivuyile Kobokana, Trichardt van Tonder, Yves Bashiya, Hein Potgieter, Andries Smit, Handré Basson, Neil Jacobs, Ayanda Nogampula. Substitutes: Giovanno Fourie/Bobby Dyer, Wade Lotter/Sangoni Mxoli, Nolan Clark, Brendan Snyman, Calvano King/Marlon Lewis, Carl van Niekerk, Siyanda Grey/Milo Nqoro.
