Bloemfontein – Cheetahs wing Jongi Nokwe says it would be a dream come true to play for the Springboks against the British and Irish Lions.
His last Test was against Australia in Johannesburg in the Tri Nations - the pacy left wing became a national hero when he scored four tries in Bryan Habana’s absence.
Nokwe drew attention to himself with some good shows in the Currie Cup in which he went on to score the second most tries (seven) in the competition.
Nokwe (27) missed the start of the current Super14 with an injured hand, but has scored five tries in seven games since his return. He is convinced the selectors
will consider him if he plays good rugby.
His tries is the Cheetahs’ surprising victories over the Sharks and Crusaders made him the name on everybody’s lips again. And with injuries playing havoc with a number of Springbok backs, his name has come up again.
However, his possible inclusion has been questioned following the Cheetahs’ defeat to the Waratahs. Nokwe’s defence stood out as a possible weakness.
He says the players have been spoken to about it and he hopes it will not be the case again against the Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.
Other than hoping to impress the selectors, Nokwe would like to finish the Super14 on a high with victories in the Cheetahs’ two remaining games.
After the Bulls, the Cheetahs still have to play the Stormers in Bloemfontein.
“We did not start the series well, but if we win the last two games, we’ll finish on a high. That can mean a lot for us in the Currie Cup,” said Nokwe.
