Cape Town - The Neo Africa Series, scheduled for Newlands in Cape Town at the end of January, has been scrapped after the sponsor pulled out.

The event was scheduled for later this month with the Stormers, Lions and Cheetahs set to lock horns. The Cheetahs were only recently invited to play after the Sharks withdrew earlier this month.

The Cheetahs will, however, still travel to Cape Town to play against the Stormers on February 4.

The match will now be dubbed the "DHL-challenge match".

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské confirmed to the Volksblad newspaper that the series was called off.

"Neo Africa pulled out as sponsor. The whole series is off.

"The Stormers asked if we would still go down to the Cape to play a practice match against them," said Drotské.

The Cheetahs will now play against the Griffons in either Welkom or Bloemfontein on 31 January - the day they were supposed to clash with the Lions in Cape Town.

The Cheetahs' updated pre-season schedule:

28 January: Southern Kings (East London); 31 January: Griffons (Welkom/Bloemfontein); 4 February: Stormers (Cape Town) and 11 February: Bulls (Polokwane).
