Neo Africa Series scrapped

2012-01-20 07:53

Cape Town - The Neo Africa Series, scheduled for Newlands in Cape Town at the end of January, has been scrapped after the sponsor pulled out.

The event was scheduled for later this month with the Stormers, Lions and Cheetahs set to lock horns. The Cheetahs were only recently invited to play after the Sharks withdrew earlier this month.

The Cheetahs will, however, still travel to Cape Town to play against the Stormers on February 4.

The match will now be dubbed the "DHL-challenge match".

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské confirmed to the Volksblad newspaper that the series was called off.

"Neo Africa pulled out as sponsor. The whole series is off.

"The Stormers asked if we would still go down to the Cape to play a practice match against them," said Drotské.

The Cheetahs will now play against the Griffons in either Welkom or Bloemfontein on 31 January - the day they were supposed to clash with the Lions in Cape Town.

The Cheetahs' updated pre-season schedule:

28 January: Southern Kings (East London); 31 January: Griffons (Welkom/Bloemfontein); 4 February: Stormers (Cape Town) and 11 February: Bulls (Polokwane).

Why? silly silly could become a great event......................this time of year we are all gagging for some rugga!

  • Karlheinz von Bentheim - 2012-01-20 08:14

Another indication perhaps of the dry rot in the WPRU?

To people who give a thumbs down why else would Rassie leave a short notice, the Sharks pull out the tournament and the Sponsor drop out at the last minute. Was probably started only to increase revenue for the boys club in the union offices.

Damn...now the Stormers won't win anything this season!

      Gerald - 2012-01-20 08:34

Yes you are right Stormers loose every thing matches, coaches, sponsors

  • Ryan - 2012-01-20 08:37

Well we can blame the Sharks for this one. Lions and Cheetahs aren't exactly a pre season crowd puller. Most of the sponsorship would have been put down based on a Stormers Sharks clash, without that clash the money spend couldn't be justified.

      Happy in fools paradise?

      Manus - 2012-01-20 09:08

How could two teams like the Cheetahs and Lions, both playing attractive, attacking rugby, not be crowd pullers? Some peoples arrogance knows no bounds. Don't you think your comments are a bit rich, coming from (assuming you're a Stormers supporter) somebody who supports a team that hasn't won any important trophies for a very long time? If my memory isn't too hazy, the Lions won last year's Currie Cup and the Cheetahs have done so very recently and has been more competitive in that series over the past decade than the Stormers/WP.

Any bets on how poor the Lions will feature in the Super Rugby? Watch this space

Stormers facebook page says different: "The DHL Pre-Season Series - The withdrawal of the Sharks from the annual pre-season Cape Town based tournament and a change in sponsor will see the DHL Stormers take on the MTN Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs in the “DHL Pre-Season Series”. The 2 fixtures will both take place at DHL Newlands, with the Stormers taking on the Lions in the opener on Friday 27 January and then the Cheetahs on Saturday 4 February. The games form an important part of each of the teams preparation for the rigours of Vodacom Super Rugby"

WPRU is an embarresment! Everything still run by amateurs like amateurs, no wonder Rassie left. Sinking ship. Very soon more Province players will join other unions where they'll be welcomed with open arms, not like their supporters still stuck in the 80's insecure amateur era. Even their youth system is falling apart, neither u/19 or u/21 made the finals last year. Heyneke, pull out the cheque book, WP is a buyers market...

      Brevan - 2012-01-20 12:36

If you don't support WP Rugby, it shouldn't matter what happens at WP Rugby. All you need to worry about is that your team beat the Stormers and WP on the field.

After the Sharks withdrew the series lacked bite! Or so they say!

  • philip.spies - 2012-01-20 09:35

This is a real shame, I was looking forward to the great attacking rugby that would have been on display. Go Cheetahs!

Media reports this morning that the annual DHL Stormers pre-season fixtures have been cancelled are incorrect. The DHL Stormers will play the Lions and the Cheetahs in Cape Town as per the release circulated on 18 January (copied below). DHL replaces NEO Africa as the sponsor and the series has been renamed the DHL Pre-Season Series.http://www.thestormers.co.za/article.asp?id=1209081

  • Dewald - 2012-01-20 10:44

The Stormers can even arrange a tea party!

  • Edward Diegaard - 2012-01-20 11:11

I gez Neo Africa wanted the series to be played at Cpt stadium and WP didnt want that

  • Hendrik - 2012-01-20 13:56

No mention why the sponsor pulled out. I don't think it has anything to do with rugby or the teams involved. Someone needs to "dig" a bit and get the story behind the story. Not the 1st 'strange' sponshorship story with Neo Africa's name in it?

  • Sannie - 2012-01-20 14:39

Blame the ANC, Zuma and Malema.

  • Andries Bester - 2012-01-22 01:56

Ag come on Stormers, clap yourself, dont think the Sharks will always be soft.. you might get a surprise.....

  • Andries Bester - 2012-01-22 01:59

So Saffa, what about the Stormers being klapped on Newlands by the Sharks, hahahaha, then i will really laugh.. arrogancy comes always to a fall
