Limerick - Munster ground out a 15-6 victory over a second-string Australia in appalling conditions on Tuesday, with former Australian rugby Sevens flyhalf Paul Warwick scoring all the points for the Irish side.
In a match played in high winds and driving rain, Warwick kicked three penalties and two drop goals to secure victory for Munster, while Berrick Barnes scored two penalties for the Wallabies.
The tourists' latest setback, after Australia's 35-18 defeat to England at Twickenham last weekend, came as head coach Robbie Deans prepares his strongest side for the match against Italy on Saturday.
The Wallabies looked disinterested at times, particularly during a second half which a largely youthful Munster outfit comfortably dominated the game. However, the home side lacked the necessary invention to breach the Australian try-line, going closest through a series of pick-and-go efforts close to the posts.
Deadlocked at 6-6 at halftime after Barnes had given Australia a first minute lead, Warwick kicked penalty goals in the 42nd and 49th minutes before the fly-half knocked over a drop goal in the 62nd.
Warwick, who played for Manly in his native Australia before moving to Ireland with Connacht in 2004, could have inflicted a heavier defeat with another penalty which struck the post in the 64th minute.
However, he had already done enough to secure Munster's fourth win over Australia after previous victories in 1967, 1981 and 1992.
