Cape Town - Former Free State captain Helgard Müller has officially been named as Free State's Vodacom Cup coach for next season.
The Volksblad newspaper reports that the Free State Rugby Union (FRU) announced the decision on Thursday. This comes after the same newspaper reported on Thursday that Müller was the favourite for the position. He replaces Pine Pienaar, who left to become the Blue Bulls' Currie Cup coach.
Joe Beukes en Eddie Fredericks were named as Müller's assistants. Beukes will take charge of the forwards while Fredericks will be the backline coach.
Former Free State wing, Ashwell Rafferty, who will also coach the union's Under 19-and Under 21 teams next season, is also part of the management team. Rafferty will be the logistics manager and Andries (Biko) Mogotsi will be the team manager.
Harold Verster, managing director of the Cheetahs-Company and president of die FRU, said they picked Müller because he is very experienced. He played 245 matches for Free State, which is still a South African record.
Müller was previously one of Free State's coaches in the 2004 Vodacom Cup season. After that he became the Cheetahs' backline coach in the 2005 and 2006 Currie Cup seasons. He fulfilled the role of team manager of the Currie Cup side from 2007 to 2011.
