Cooper set for Oz return

Sydney - New Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie will cast his net wide on Friday by naming 40 players in his first national squad for the four-nation Rugby Championship.

According to the smh.com.au website, McKenzie said when he got the job as Robbie Deans' successor earlier this month that he was unlikely to make radical changes early in his tenure.

But the former World Cup-winning Wallaby and successful Reds coach is certain to bring Reds playmaker Quade Cooper back in from the international wilderness ahead of Australia's Rugby Championship opener and Bledisloe Cup showdown with the All Blacks in Sydney on August 17.

Cooper hasn't featured for the Wallabies since last year when he was fined for publicly criticising Deans' national team set up as "toxic".

McKenzie will unveil his 40-man squad at a media conference at ARU headquarters in Sydney on Friday.
