McCaw speaks on 'filthy' final

2011-12-06 07:50

Christchurch - All Blacks captain Richie McCaw has admitted he was "surprised" the International Rugby Board did not cite French player Aurelien Rougerie for the infamous eye gouge in the Rugby World Cup final.

Speaking for the first time about the incident, McCaw said the final against the French got "filthy" when he was eye-gouged.

"The French are worse when they are scared ... They were as bad as they have been and were going for the eyes," he said.

"My eye was a bit sore for a while and I was struggling to see for a bit. I was surprised they didn't cite him."

Rougerie escaped being cited for foul play in October's final, despite new video evidence showing the France centre had a case to answer. No action could be taken because the new evidence came outside the required 36 hours after the match. The IRB will now look at extending the citing window after reviewing the footage.

At a breakfast fundraiser in Christchurch on Monday, McCaw spoke openly about the eye-gouging incident and other Rugby World Cup experiences.

While he was half-blinded in the final few minutes of the game, the team was trying to decide whether to kick the ball or hold it.

There was confusion over the best way to play and, in a last-minute decision, the All Blacks held the ball. "Everyone thinks we were all composed out there," McCaw said. "At least it worked out OK in the end."

In the moments after the whistle, he felt "sheer relief" but it took a few weeks before the realisation of winning kicked in.

While the final was tense, he said the team had never been better prepared than for the semi-final against the Wallabies. Within minutes of the game starting, "you could see it in their eyes" that the Australians were beaten, McCaw said.

When the Webb Ellis Cup was finally in All Blacks hands, McCaw joked, all the unwritten rules about it went out the window. The cup is never supposed to be alone, no-one is allowed to drink out of it and no-one is allowed to drink near it.

"We broke every single one of them."

He told how the cup's lid was misplaced one night and a player drove for half an hour out of town to find it.

Pipe down Hot, your not even real supporter of the game! If you live in SA and support the AB's your not a fan, your an idiot!

      adam.bulkin - 2011-12-06 08:59

He is just making excuses for the way the All Blacks spoiled the game at the end, holding on for dear life. What a load of bull crap about being confused and half blinded. They knew what they were doing and now they are trying to justify their lousy bad-sport way of playing. The New Zealanders also really went out their way to insult South Africa by giving ref of the year to that bastard who let the Australians cheat their way into the semis. Sick of it!!!!!

      Alexander - 2011-12-06 10:00

"Given" indeed. One cannot claim to have truly won a match when the opposing team's captain is named Man of the Match.

Hey Lida, remember when you said NZ is boring (no#1 Adrenalin sports capital in world as you play bowling LOL), remember when you said NZ is to regulated/restricted.... how's your freedom of speech going? But most importantly, why is Aotearoa so much better at sport ie Olympics, Netball, especially Rugby, bowling....actually most if not every sport than SA? BTW, remember the '95 cup (Charity Cup), imagine if SA didn't win especially with the new 'RAINBOW nation' at stake and just imagine if Laurie Mains didn't get paid off with a contract for Natal as hush money Do some research and get a life. Kia ora,

      Helen - 2011-12-06 11:55

Hot what do think he is doing?blowing kisses, world champs for the next four years?yes maybe but with alot of help from their best (crap) referee Bryce,by his own admission he made mistakes.May I ask what makes them mighty? the fact that they beat the crummy French by one point hahahahaha. you know, we all know it should have been a Bok/AB final then the ABs would never have been so mighty. The All Blacks had to resort to bribery etc to obtain their first win in many, many years so HOT like it or not they are a very average team.

      Hot - 2011-12-06 11:59

      4 more years boys/babies???? 4 MORE YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Richie did you thank Bryce? and nominate him for the NZ referee award for services to NZ rugby

      Pierre - 2011-12-07 11:12

Linda many of us were hoping this NZ whining will stop after they were given the cup, but it just does not. One sided New Zealanders. Focussing on the apparent eye-gouge, but why so silent on the Richie McCaw incident on Morgan Para.

Obviously you're educated in SA Dianne.......he wasn't complaining during the RWC and unlike SA whingers he never wore an arm-band or made excuses At least the Saffas are good at.........? what are you good at? Here's a FACT.............SA needed SA refs during apparteid, SA refused Maori during your regime, SA relied on dirty play but when confronted with harder physicality........well, the rest is history and you folded, stay home Saffas, you're way too arrogant and extremely ignorant.......50 million v 4 million Bwahhhhh, Losers

      sam.kaitawa - 2011-12-06 12:23

@GO?......."You a real Richie-wannabee", get an education! Can you count "GO", where abouts are the Boks on world rankings, is it 4th or 5th?

      Go - 2011-12-06 12:26

      Lol@Sam - get a world cup without cheating !!

      James - 2011-12-06 18:07

Hey GO if SA is better why is my neighbourhood full of South Africans??? Funny also, that none of them have whinged about Bryce and all have mentioned how they backed the All Blacks after the Bokke were knocked out (Same as AB fans when we were cheated in 07!). This site must be for the scaredy cats in gated complex in JHB to talk nonsense. You were gifted the cup in 07, so no grounds to complain really. Quarter final against Fiji, Semi against Argentina, Final against England. Thats any teams dream.

  • Andre - 2011-12-06 08:34

I think an eye gouge is way less of a problem than corrupt rugby officials. You were reffed into the final, France played to get there, clearly they were not going to let you off the hook that easily.

      Andre - 2011-12-06 09:03

Ps: Funny how its always the biggest cheats that moan about the cheats. Whats next, Pocock moaning about slowing down the breakdown? LOL

      Bob - 2011-12-06 10:03

How do you figure the ABs were reffed into the final ? it was Australia that beat the boks partly because the ref was shocking and partly because the boks couldn't adapt their game to turn possession into points, I didn't see the ABs struggling to cope with the Aussies style of play, if it makes you feel better then carry on dreaming you would have beaten the ABs in the final, I'm not an AB supporter just a fair minded sports lover.

      Hugh - 2011-12-06 11:03

Bob, it would have been at least a fair comparison for the AB's bragging rights. Aussy was terrible and not Semi final candidates this year. France got through by chance. Would it not have been better for the game if the two top teams this season played out? Just a thought.

      Smell - 2011-12-06 11:12

Fair comments Bob. So which team do you support then?

      Bob - 2011-12-06 11:29

Hugh, of course everybody would like to see the best teams pitted against each other in the final of any competition but as we know this doesn't always happen, I just feel it is very unfair to blame the AB side because a NZ ref had a shocker of a game that the AB side were not even playing in, I think it's very far fetched to say the ref could ref a team out of the competition, with so much possession the boks have to take some blame for not turning that into points, the AB's have had their own share of bad notably in 2007, this was their year, Smell LIVERPOOL.

      Andre - 2011-12-06 11:49

Of course they were reffed into the final, by a Kiwi. Look the ABs were the best team at the tournament, I am not disputing that. But lets not lose focus here, Bryce had some serious shockers, and was promptly rewarded with ref of the year? I am not going to get drawn into a debate about the specifics of the RWC nonsense, again. I would however like to make noise about obvious corrupt officials not being investigated.

      Hugh - 2011-12-06 15:28

@Bob, agreed, its just if SA lost because they wernt good enough on a fair playing field (The purpose of the ref) I'd feel okay that the AB's crow from the roof tops. Just this really wasn't the case, so understandably we have sour grapes. A supposedly world class ref awarded the ref of the year, judged by a predominantly NZ panel of which Laurence Snr has influence. Stinks a tad.

  • Gerhard - 2011-12-06 08:36

Richie has the bad habit of always been a few seconds too slow to get out of the way in rucks and of being on the wrong side - in the old days he would have been trampled out of the way. And who says the so-called eye gouging wasn't accidental? When will the AB stop whingeing? The french gave them a hell of a fright, maybe that's why mr McCaw is still going on about this so-called incident.

      Justin - 2011-12-06 08:47

and thats why the BOKS are ranked 4th in the world right? - Every openside flanker does that, thats their job in the team???

      Go - 2011-12-06 10:53

Justin - your point being ?????

      Justin - 2011-12-06 11:56

@ GO...every opensider aims to play as close to the offside line as possible, or as close as the ref and his assistants allows him too...its really that simple. Im sure if you ask Brussow, Pocock, Burger, Stegman, George Smith, Josh Kronfeld, Ruben Kruger, they'll all tell the same thing - ur always going to push the boundaries of the law.....y do you think a team plays on if the ref miss a blatant forward pass - the same principle applies to any rule in any sport, if the people officiating allows you to get away with it, you'r not going to stop and say, i did something wrong - please stop play???

      Justin - 2011-12-06 12:11

If you look at that game again....Brussow were afforded the same amount of time (when he was on field) at some of the breakdowns as Pocock...Agreed that Bryce had a shocker, but with 70+ % of posession, wouldnt you expect a hugely experienced Bok team to convert that into some points? Lets talk about the penalties early in the game where they decided to kick for corners, instead of taking the 3 points?? How about taking some responsibility that bad tactical decisions were made on that day, that the execution was poor that day, instead of taking the easy way out, and just put all the blame on the ref?

      Go - 2011-12-06 12:19

how can you possibly ignore the fact that the "ref" or lack of reffing in this case, has a huge impact on the outcome of the game ???

      Justin - 2011-12-06 15:34

Go, im not ignoring the fact....i acknowledged the fact that he had a bad game - no how is that ignoring that fact....you are not even willing to acknowledge that the BOKS did not take their chances in that game.....Hopefully the new BOK coach without the "retired senior players" will be able to play the situation better! AND i hope you get over your i-blame-only-the-ref syndrome. Have a great day. Cheers!

      Peter - 2011-12-06 15:39

Nice artical, that is why he is such a great player, not like the losers here, moaning still moaning and will be moaning until they are knocked out of the next world cup quicker than this time.

  • John - 2011-12-06 08:39

"The IRB will now look at extending the citing window after reviewing the footage." The AB's are wronged once in this department and this is the result. Farce.

      sam.kaitawa - 2011-12-06 12:16

John.....great intellectual foresight, correct me if I'm wrong but we (AB's) have already won the RWC and actually if truth be known....Richie never made a great big deal about it. Imagine if it was a Saffa especially when considering when Ozzy beat you (Saffa) more times than not....SA/Boks have the worst record regarding TN than anyone but at least you came 3rd (AGAIN) The Boks were good when you had things your own way ie refs, armbands, eyegouging, stomping, apparteid, food poisoning etc etc but the reality is you're probably the 4th or 5th ranked best in the world. Wake up

  • Ian - 2011-12-06 08:42

      sam.kaitawa - 2011-12-06 15:20

Actually Ian, you forgot the Olympics as well......oh that's right, the world refs cheated as well because 'everybodies'out to get the poor hard done by' lazy Saffas. Why with a population of 50 million compared to NZ's 4 million are you worse. Was it the ref? Instead of excuses, you need to dig deeper, maybe it's your mentality.......maybe you're just not as good as you think you are, fact is........results speak for themselves

      sam.kaitawa - 2011-12-06 15:24

@GO, "and like spoiled little brats getting their way eventually by hook or CROOK !!! " is that like SA being better at the Olympics, soccor, netball, baseball, softball etc etc etc. Hmmmmmm, me thinks that South Africa is pretty useless at sport and especially useless at politics..........Hmmmmmmmm, what do you reckon? What a joke, yet real

      Go - 2011-12-06 15:31

Sammy boy - you sound like a disgruntled ex pat, that knows that you are no longer welcome in this country. Must be sad sitting around in your apartment, making attacks on the country you so yearn to return to. Why don't you and "Paddy (the trans gender sheep) go hop into bed, your frustrations are starting to show !!!

      James - 2011-12-06 18:16

Wayne Barnes cheated New Zealand of the 07 world cup so that his English side would have an easier semi. It worked in South Africa's favour hugely given that from 04-07 (as with 08-11) the All Blacks had won 65% of the time against South Africa. The reality is, that South Africa only won in 2007 for the same reason they are blaming New Zealand of in 2011. Shoe on the other foot.

  • Gerhard - 2011-12-06 09:13

Justin if its the openside flanker's job to spoil the opponents' ball I say bring back the "trapskrum" - allow the opponents to trample the guy underfoot. That will be the quickest way to stop this nonsense - and then Richie will really have something to whinge about!

      Justin - 2011-12-06 11:59

Hey Gerhard, i would agree with you. That would be the quickest way to stop spoiling of the oppositions ball, and we would see a more free-flowing game...Its not just Richie that'll be affected though - just give credit where its due, Richie is good at slowing ball down, so is Brussow, Bismark, Pocock and lotsa other guys...

  • Wesley - 2011-12-06 09:25

  • allen.visser - 2011-12-06 09:56

  • kevin.rack - 2011-12-06 09:57

Quite simple, the worlds greatest rugby cheat, god I wish we had one, bitching about been eye gouged while been repeatedly off his feet offsides while playing the ball on the ground after the ref warned him dont do it again. Please dont do it again is a penalty not a warning. A bit rich Ritchie considering cheating is as bad as dirty play. When players become frustrated by the inability of the ref to ref the game fairly it becomes dirty. Player see the biase and re-act. Same same but different, Schalla gouging Pocock under the same circumstances. RWC's are given and not won. For the first time in RWC history NZ did not deserved to win it. So Kiwis trolls have short memories in forgetting how many RWC's they got naughted by the refs. Remember how those forward passed felt? RWC's are given and not won.

      Bob - 2011-12-06 10:16

NZ has yet to WIN a world cup. The first one they got without SA in the mix, the second they got via blatant cheating and match fixing, most noticably with Bryce Lawrence in the SA - Aus game. Why was Bryce Lawrence named ref of the year by the NZRU? He got the Bokke out of NZ's way! The rest he received in cash, plain tickets, holidays etc. Dirty Kiwis.

      Zion - 2011-12-06 12:38

You see how it is We lost dammit or is this just a matter of entitlement without doing the work? Typical SA mentality

  • Zion - 2011-12-06 11:46

      Gregory - 2011-12-06 13:25

They are NOT better than us.If we played them in the semi's and we lost, then I MIGHT agree with that. I still get goose bumps when I think about the game if we had played them in the semi's. I honestly believe we would have trounced them. The Boks would have been majorly pumped up for that game (and probably them too).

      Jerhone - 2011-12-06 15:13

we were beaten squarely but what we are upset about is not being beaten fairly

  • Adriana - 2011-12-06 11:53

Is there no ending to this moaning by the south africans, I have lived here for over thirty years and they are getting more arrogant than ever and have become the worlds biggest moaners and whingers I have ever seen, what a bunch of jerks

      Roland - 2011-12-07 10:31

You know what being an AB fan and all that i do believe the AB were out played and maybe did have a hint of choke but in those situations they did all the right things to relieve the pressure even by holding the ball even when playing backwards they still did the right things great captain and you know what if you think of it any team in the world would have done the same (5min to go ) why not even the Bokka would

Ritchie mate I am also a Kiwi and delighted we won but do not expect any sympathy or understanding from me after you deliberately took out Parra with a knee in the face earlier on.This belongs to the "what goes around come around"category

      Hugh - 2011-12-06 15:33

Granted the guy is good and pushes the bounds of the law. Its his job, but the griping is so Fitzpatrick.

      Peter - 2011-12-06 15:56

Bruce you surprise me, winning at all cost, that is the south african motto, havent you learnt that yet, mind you , being a kiwi you are just a pacific pom if you understand what I mean???

Hey Guys ! and losers , simply put we havnt much work to do and i browsing through all the comments and agressive bad losers that just cant see that the boks lost and if you watched the same game and listened firstly to the springbok captain and all the knowledgeable persons on shows and ways of media you would have heard what the real rugby fundies had to say : yes the boks were on the receiving end of POCOCK alone( gee what a guy no one could clean him out ) and a a few ref mistakes on both sides look at the game again SA high tackles and , and, but what everyone seems to say is that the boks could have won besides the ref ! knock on fumbles and forward passes and no plan aimless kicking trying to intercept and allowing pocock to get away with murder ,play to the ref change the game plan ! so to all the loser idiots who seem to think otherwise you got no cup you have no Tri nations you have nothing even the score board says you lost get over it and i sure if japan were to play in the SA currie cup compitition they would have won it go the Japs ! LOL

Interesting take, I recall these pages filled with Aussie; NZ gripes and foul being cried by all in Austrilasia in previously lost tournaments. We put up with all your bitching in the past; its our turn so suck it up.

      Phil - 2011-12-07 19:10

C'mon Roland don't you know that South Africans have difficulty with reality? Don't burst their bubbles ....please continue with the conspiracy theory / Bryce lawrence stuff.

  • Zion - 2011-12-07 17:13

The joke that was referred to was Andre Markgraff. Curiously enough the book and contents has a copyright attached to it while South African Jokes are in the public domain. Just a thought.
