McCaw: Quade pissed me off!

2012-10-10 08:09

Cape Town - All Black captain Richie McCaw has admitted that his duel with Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper became personal and somewhat bitter.

Cooper incensed the New Zealand public last year when he struck his knee into the face of the New Zealand skipper during a Tri-Nations Test in Brisbane which Australia won 25-20.

And in his newly released autobiography, The Open Side, McCaw admits the "deliberate" incident had caused him to lose sight of the game plan and target the Australian pivot.

According to the stuff.co.nz website, McCaw revealed the following about the incident: "There was a bit of post-game controversy around Quade Cooper's attempt to knee me in the head as he was extricating himself from a ruck," he wrote.

"The intent of what he was trying to do pissed me off more than the execution. Shortly after that happened, I was carrying and should have passed, but I lit up and I saw Quade standing in front of me and clattered into him instead.

"I was disappointed in myself doing that, letting it get personal. There's no need - players like Quade get sorted. Sooner or later they get their beans."

The All Blacks capped the year by beating the Wallabies in the Rugby World Cup semi-finals and went on to lift the title with victory over France in the final.

Richie deserves a knee to the head every time he is laying on the wrong side of the ruck.

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-10-10 08:57

@ cape.maori: And you deserve two front teeth.

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 09:02

@Warren - is that the best chirp? According to your profile, you attended a technical school - I now understand!

      luke.watskots - 2012-10-10 09:03

Hey los vir Cape uit, hy gaan my join in die struggle!!!!!!!!

      warren.vanwyk.3 - 2012-10-10 09:09

@ cape.maori: You mean according to my real profile?

      darryn.lahner - 2012-10-10 09:31

Cape MAori ...... I love the way you have a go at everyone else's profiles yet you hide behind an anonymous one. You are such a dirty, yellow little crawler. Richie is arguably the best there ever was. I am a bok supporter but the AB's are untouchable when it comes to classy running rugby. Well done Richie McCaw, you deserve it.

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 10:17

@Darryn - thanks for the compliment!

      kevin.ohanlon.73 - 2012-10-11 21:37

@darryn, nice trout..what part of the world?

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-10 08:45

Don't worry McCaw I'm sure you piss off a lot of Springboks and other countries with your "professional" fouls you commit during games. You yourself did admit to this and with a smile on your face. Perhaps you do deserve this treatment if you lay on the wrong sides of rucks.

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 08:47

Accept the guy is a legend!! Ok, I understand your heroes are Bees Roux, Joost vd Westhuizen, Pedrie Wannenburg, Dean Greyling, etc!!!!

      om.nom.nom.01 - 2012-10-10 09:03

cape.maori... for once I agree with you, there ain't no bigger legend at C.H.E.A.T.I.N.G than Ritchie McCaw. Now go ahead & try to convince me that he does not specialize in unlawful play.

  • chris.buchner.12 - 2012-10-10 08:49

Ironic coming from the possibly dirtiest player of the game, now you know Richie.

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 08:50

      ?????????????

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-10-10 09:03

Dirtiest player!!! Seriously? Get your head out of your @ss!!!

      bootman.bokke - 2012-10-10 09:11

Don't hate the player.................hate the game.

      gawie.krotz - 2012-10-10 09:13

Richie is the best player ever....anyone who call him a cheat is a dumb nut who probably know nothing about rugby.

      chris.buchner.12 - 2012-10-10 10:02

Yes dirtiest player, of all the games I've watched of his he was at least half the time on the wrong side at break downs has hands in and plays the players at break downs not for the ball. But I guess the truth hurts.

      nzbro.allblack - 2012-10-10 10:06

interesting philosophy jimmy.moustache.12 . Thankfully hugging wont hurt anybody. It brings joy and unity. On the other side of the coin when you put a fifty hate filled saffa bok supporters in a room they eventually behave like rabid dogs and turn on each other in a hate filled feeding frenzy when they fail to reach the goal. ( sound familiar ?)

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-10-10 10:08

@Chris, that doesn't make him a dirty player you idiot!!! It makes him an openside flanker! (Yes, it's their job to bend the rules and get the ball, slow down play etc, ask HB, FL, DP and the likes) @Pubes on your face Jimmy... I'm impressed you even know what those poor kids are never mind mocking them!

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 10:10

@Jimmy - that statement is not very politically correct! lol

      chris.buchner.12 - 2012-10-10 10:27

@Jimmy no that's not called bending the rules its breaking them offenses that merit 3 point penalties can't be called bending the rules maybe free kicks yes. But I guess that's what they teach in NZ rugby.

      om.nom.nom.01 - 2012-10-10 12:45

So according to - Jimmy NZ - it's called "bending the rules" in New Zeeland? Let me tell you something mate, here in Africa it is called C.H.E.A.T.I.N.G. Go to Youtube & type "Ritchie McCaw is a cheat" or "All Blacks cheating". It seems I'm not alone.

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 10:14

  • kevin.moxham.3 - 2012-10-10 10:09

So Richie 'Mr Cheat' McCaw - when do you get your beans.....soon i hope..!!!

      cape.maori - 2012-10-10 10:15

In the past the bokkies used to scream "choke, choke, choke", now they scream "cheat, cheat, cheat"! What is next? Give me a PK?

  • glen.keesing - 2012-10-10 12:32

look who's laughing now, one has 100 test wins, and is being hailed as the greatest Rugby player in the professional error and the other.... Quade who?

  • allblack.kiaora - 2012-10-10 13:19

There will NEVER be another player like our captain. You sa fools need to learn that skill encompasses our All Black team. All Black , All Best , All Ways!!!

  • steven.crofton - 2012-10-10 17:17

Wow, allblack.kiaora, so that's NZ modesty and humility! I think McCaw will go down as one of the greats, but like it or not, he deliberately cheats and the refs are too in awe of him to ping him. Other players - and not only Boks - do exactly what he does, and they go 3 points down almost every time. Good on him for getting away with it, but to me it just feels wrong, unethical, and not in the spirit of the game. That's why he'll never be one of the greats for me.

      allblack.kiaora - 2012-10-11 08:04

Excuse the arrogance , the way people are calling my cpt a cheat is pretty unnerving. If you are a soccer player , and the ball is passed to you and you KNOW you are offside , do you stop if the ref / linesman did not say , and TELL them you were offside??No. Which is why we have refs Steven. Every player will try to get away with as much as he can , and as much as he is allowed.

  • steven.crofton - 2012-10-10 17:26

Lots of other players cheat or bend the rules or whatever you wanna call it, and they'll never be real greats either, no matter how good they are. True greats are guys like Matfield, John Eales, Jonah Lomu, Fourie du Preez, etc, guys who were utterly brilliant without having to do dodgy things. Yes, flankers need to play on the edge of the rules more than other players, but I promise you, if the refs penalised McCaw half as often as they do other players who do exactly the same things he does, not even New Zealanders would be calling him a great because he would have given away a thousand points and dropped years ago. Like Heinrich Brussouw for us. I'm not saying he's as good as McCaw, but he's a good example of my point.

      Jaco Lötter - 2012-10-11 08:41

McCaw is a great player and just may be the best openside up to now, but it is good to see he is still human and that someone can get under his skin.

      allblack.kiaora - 2012-10-11 09:50

I agree with you re all the great players mentioned. Make no mistake , sa had , and has , some outstanding players. We have seen how many players get away with things , no-one calls them cheats. I feel it completely irrational to call McCaw a cheat. I feel also sa needs to learn from this , blood some young stars. Stop playing sa rugby of 1970 , where is the team of 1995 , 1998...long gone , but the talent is there again , even more so. Just completely under developed.

  • flippie.zyl - 2012-10-10 21:58

he is a great even an all time great to suggest anything different will be to admit you dont know much about rugby and sure have not played it at least as a forward no one dont cheat atleast no one good enough to play on tv dont cheat...if they dont why all the penalties?as an saffa fan i can only admire and hope that one day i can bump into him somewere in a bar and have a good chat that sould be to intresting(oukay maybe not bump)... just one thing kallis once said a truly great sportsman dont wright an outo B wile still playing and i kinda agree it dont sit to well... non the less a great player and example for any flanker on both sides of the scrum. im a very reluctant fan
