Matfield: I'll only play for Bulls

2012-04-18 17:00

Cape Town - Former Springbok lock Victor Matfield has confirmed that Bok coach Heyneke Meyer approached him about a possible return to rugby but nothing is decided yet.

Media reports on Sunday indicated that Meyer is keen for Matfield to return to lead the Boks in their three-Test series against England in June.

Matfield spoke to Eyewitness News Sport about the subject on Wednesday afternoon.

They posted the following on their Twitter page: "Victor Matfield confirms that Heyneke Meyer's approached him about a possible return. Nothing decided yet though."

Rumours also surfaced on Tuesday that Matfield was spotted in Durban talking to Sharks coach John Plumtree, which led many to believe he might be considering a move to the Sharks to gain game time ahead of the Boks' series against England.

But Matfield quashed those rumours, saying the only team he will play for, should he come out of retirement, is the Bulls.

"VictorMatfield tells us the only team he would consider returning to play for is the Bulls. 'My bloed is blou' (My blood is blue),"  Eyewitness News Sport tweeted.

But whether Matfield - who's currently a rugby pundit on SuperSport - returns to the playing field, remains to be seen.

He said he needs to chat to his family and his employers first.

"At this stage there's no decision, it's a hard call to make," he said.

Never doubted that - man of honour!!!

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 17:42

This whole VM issue is in any way just a 'storm in a teacup' (no pun intended)... If VM returns it will be for a short period anyway... Personally I hope he does, he is a great leader who is respected amongst his peers.

      colin85 - 2012-04-18 17:47

Nothing to do with Honor, and it also totally proves the fact that there IS provincialism with top Springboks - that really sucks for people like Goosen and SA general style of play.

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-04-18 17:52

The Bulls do seem to have a true family culture there, more so than any other team in SA. No wonder they are the only side to have won Super Rugby, and 3 times !!! Something very special about Bulls rugby.

      pieterduplessis - 2012-04-18 17:58

The only advantage I see is that we will hear less of his incredible insight on the TV.

      Terence - 2012-04-18 18:09

Pieter, now that you put it that way, maybe he should take Bob 'paddock' Skinstad with him.

      Saffa - 2012-04-18 20:27

Oh boy - this roadshow is going to be interesting. No wonder Newlands didn't get a Bok/England test - SARU knew better.

      Ken - 2012-04-18 20:59

@CharlesDimwit The only reason players stay true to the Bulls is because they have the biggest cheque book!.... not royalty or any other BS, just plain hard cash!....and BTW the Lions also won the super cup, the first franchise/province to win a super cup in SA!

      sean.looney - 2012-04-19 12:41

had pieter de villers pulled this one out the bag with, say for instance, a province or sharks player all hell would have broken loose.. but because its heyneke meyer and because its a bulls player this is a good idea? what about the likes of bekker and etzebeth who, in my eyes, look like they could be the new matfield/botha pairing for the boks? they're young and hungry and have proven themselves to be the best lock partnership in this current super rugby season. why dont we give them a chance? is meyer just going to stick to the same tried and trusted formula we've had for the last 8 years? isn't it time for progression? lets start picking the form players and not the players who brought us great memories in the past.

  • Lloyd - 2012-04-18 17:16

what a slap in the face of the other hopefuls out there. The national coach sending a message that a retired player is better than you...sad.

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 17:16

Lloyd, who is better than Victor, please DO tell????

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 17:32

Terence, I'm sorry but Victor is still IMO the best there is. Sure there is talent e.g. Etzebeth & Juandre - sorry I don't rate the Mullet man (not of late anyway)...

      Terence - 2012-04-18 17:39

Jip, Victor has another season left in those legs.

      hannes.visser1 - 2012-04-18 17:40

I agree fully with Lloyd, John Smit saga ALL over again. Both the current Bulls locks, and all three stormers locks will out play Matfield at the moment. Matfield WAS the best lock there will ever be, but he is out of practice and old.

      Stormkaap - 2012-04-18 18:18

Rene lets face it, VM didnt have the best WC.. WAS the best lineout forward, yes, but his allround play wasnt the best.

      Jimmy NZ - 2012-04-18 18:26

Sorry Rene, Kieran Read is 27, you're thinking of Big Bad Brad Thorn :)

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 18:28

@Stormkaap, same with Bryan Habana - he was woeful last year!!

      Chris - 2012-04-18 19:47

      Bootman - 2012-04-18 19:50

I see Rene was a bit embarrassed about her "Kieran Reid is 38" comment and deleted it.

      René - 2012-04-18 19:52

I sure am Bootman, cannot believe I made such a STUPID mistake! I am human after all!!

      Nick - 2012-04-18 19:59

any lock that puts his body on the line is better

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 20:03

@Chris, my point was that you never saw Victor AND Bakkies being bullied by any team, and what happened to both the Stormer locks against the Crusaders?

      Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-18 20:14

Bul groete.

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 20:15

@Nick your little tantrums don't interest me at all, you hate anything negative against your Stormer team that haven't achieved anything worth mentioning....Get off your high horse - toodles!!!

      Ren%c3%a9 - 2012-04-18 20:21

@Blou, ek dink ook so! Cry babies!!

      Nick - 2012-04-18 20:39

and for the record RENE i will pick him for the bok team if he was active and no running 5km a day doesn't cut it playing anywhere a local drinking club, zimbabwe, france wherever and if HM wants some sanity in all this madness he needs to get matfield in the game asap where doesn't matter .........

      Saffa - 2012-04-18 21:36

@Stormkaap So you reckon you know Natalie du Toit, BWA HA HA HA HA HA And you probably house friends with Roger Federer and Tiger Woods What a joker you are, no wonder you a Stormer supporter

      stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-04-19 14:07

Yes, the current locks are doing well. Let them continue to do so.

      Stormkaap - 2012-04-19 20:09

Fake Saffa yes I do know her, before she went to Joburg, swimming for vineyards and licing with her mum in Southfield.. Yes and i know swimming well, very well..

      Smell - 2012-04-19 23:53

Rene, sorry, but what is with that hat.

  • Blouvitrioel - 2012-04-18 17:31

The King is dead! Long live the King! Bul groete.

  • Bootman - 2012-04-18 17:39

"He said he needs to chat to his family and his employers first." - His employers wont have a problem. They will be happy to be rid of him. He sucks as a commentator.

      Press - 2012-04-19 00:32

Bootman - stop jumping up and down about the best lock in the bussiness returning - just now you will sink your boat

  • guyt1 - 2012-04-18 17:43

Over the hill , too many good players to chose from now . he was good but stay retired please.

      Lance - 2012-04-19 12:47

I can honestly not believe that there are people here that think that he can be "good to go" in less than a month and a half. He is too slow around the park and cant offer the physicality that our younger locks have on offer. Please people go and buy a "Best of the Bulls dvd box set" if you want to see Matfield on the field again...He WAS one of the best.

  • Gert - 2012-04-18 17:47

Well, after taking half the Bulls' coaching staff, the least Meyer can do is give us our legend back.

  • RetiefC - 2012-04-18 17:58

  • David - 2012-04-18 18:06

Victor is one of the all time greats, and Heyneke is a brilliant coach, but I am sorry, this move is a giant leap backwards, casts doubts on Heyneke's vision, planning and confidence in other players, and does smack of provincialism.

  • marnusmnorval - 2012-04-18 18:18

He will only play for the bulls caus nobody else wants him. Old timer time for new blood so they can get ready for the rugby championship

  • Stormkaap - 2012-04-18 18:21

Lets hope he stays where he is.. retired. Comebacks never works Schumacher, Raikonenen, Thorpe, De le Hoya. There's so many of them who came back...and failed. Now this is when a coach has brain farts.. Imagine PDiv came up with this.. Remember the furore when he made Smit captain

      Stormkaap - 2012-04-19 20:13

Yeah fake Saffa even know the referee that dq'd her.. ol Peter Pienaar, is a member of her ex club.. Vineyards.. like to court controversy. Yeah Fake.. I know swimming ... very well

  • Bielie - 2012-04-18 18:56

Gee, sure is nice to see him putting country before province. What a man. Real role model.

  • Chris - 2012-04-18 19:30

HM is 'n idioot! Go Engeland!!!

      Bootman - 2012-04-18 19:35

Chris ons is twee van baie.

      Terence - 2012-04-18 19:54

Bootman, you were among the most vocal when it came to other Saffas supporting foreign teams against the Boks in the Divvy era. Double standards.

      Christian J Denyschen - 2012-04-18 19:57

      Bootman - 2012-04-18 20:54

Yes Terence. And my plees fell on deaf ears. So now I will know what it feels like to be on the other side.

      Terence - 2012-04-18 21:10

      Good for you.

      johan.oelofse3 - 2012-04-18 21:22

      WernerZA - 2012-04-19 11:57

Go England? \r\n\r\nJy is n volstruis!

      Willem - 2012-04-19 13:55

@ Chris...Heyneke Meyer 'n idioot?

      Niel - 2012-04-19 21:20

Use it, don't use it...

  • Saffa - 2012-04-18 19:46

Well obviously Vic, where else in SA will you win 3 Super cups in 5 years

  • Nick - 2012-04-18 19:57

he can still wear his head phones and comment on whats happening around the rucks

      Saffa - 2012-04-18 20:46

All he says in any event is "apply pressssssssssssssssssssssure" - sucks as a commentator...

      Saffa - 2012-04-18 20:58

But cup winner for the Bulls, go Vic GO GO GO

  • Frans - 2012-04-18 19:58

Well he might as well play for the boks seeing the whole coaching staff is bulls. He'll be quite at home.

  • Sunder - 2012-04-18 20:16

Ag nee regtig, halloooo Victor!!! Dis klaar, dis verby, live with it..

  • Marcello - 2012-04-18 20:59

O HM jy begin al met n minus who wil be ur captain. What about Uli

  • Bill - 2012-04-18 21:26

Os du Randt made a come-back and did it well, not sure that Vic should go that route though. Retire at the top of your game or become a sad shadow of yourself (John Smit?) as the younger. fresher legs start running away from you. Vic you were great, preserve that image of yourself and stay retired.

  • Philip Mostert - 2012-04-18 22:50

No no no no! Give the young a chance! Time to develop a new bok squad! Matfield you retired for a reason! Stay retired. This worries me for SA Rugby if coaches arent thinking ahead!

      Saffa - 2012-04-18 23:16

Shut up Philip, this time it's really gonna be AL DIE BULLE BOKKE, as it should be

      Press - 2012-04-19 00:37

Yea Phillip Mostert - lets give you one week like Heyneke has got and see how well you do in putting together players who have never played together before in an international . . . .

  • oppie.koffie - 2012-04-19 06:04

Ja nè! As jou bloed blou is dan is dit blou!

  • Juan - 2012-04-19 09:56

Heyneke should be prepping the young in-form locks now, not later! With all the experience in the team already, I am sure we can do without VM. With all due respect, Victor should stay retired and do it gracefully. We need new blood and a new leader to ensure a great future in SA rugby!

      juaque - 2012-04-19 11:37

Heyneke has only one week to really prepare the BOKS for England. He has no real prospects for captain at this stage and I think Victor will not be captain for the entire year. I see there are some of those that say Chilliboy should be made captain, but will we have another situation where the best Hooker is not playing. Don't get me wrong; he is playing good rugby these days but so are others. I really think that Victor should not have been vice captain the last two years, as they should have known that he was thinking of retiring. Now, if he does Captain the BOKS on this tour they should apoint someone young with captaincy potential. Hopefully he is the best in his position.

  • WernerZA - 2012-04-19 12:00

  • Ronnie - 2012-04-19 14:45

Victor should stay of the the feild and assist our jonger players with coaching. We have enough talent to ensure a three nil "victor"y over an England team that is not worthy of being named in the same breath as the BOKS. I dont know what all the fuss is about, yest it is great that we once again have three match tours and I hope this will continue for a long time, but come are the pommies really a threat?

  • Ian - 2012-04-19 14:55

So many sportsmen retire, then make come-backs, but how many actually do well when they come back? Also, the baa baas gave him a rousing send-off..a come-back almost makes mockery of this honour...I say, we have enough good locks in SA...and England are no great shakes...we can easily beat them with our youngsters, and in turn, blood them for the upcoming 4 nations...Matfield would be a step in the wrong direction. Retire with honour Victor!
