Luke hails courageous Mitchell

Garrin Lambley

Cape Town - Former Springbok Luke Watson has tweeted that John Mitchell's response to his stabbing has been "courageous and brilliant".

Watson, writing on his social networking Twitter page on Monday morning, tweeted: Just heard the news about John Mitchell... Prayers go out to him and his family! I hope he is not too seriously injured. God be with you!

Following Mitchell's release from hospital and a trauma counselling session, the former All Blacks coach turned up for work at Coca-Cola Park on Monday, prompting Watson to tweet: So impressed with John Mitchell. His response to this attack has been courageous and brilliant! I wish him and the Lions all the best!

Mitchell was stabbed in the thigh and upper arm after two robbers broke into the Johannesburg apartment he shares with Golden Lions Rugby Union conditioning coach Wayne Taylor in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He was taken to hospital in Sandton where he received stitches before being released.

Mitchell was quick to confirm he was still committed to his new job as Lions coach.

"I am still very committed to the Lions. This is a beautiful country and I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to work here. I won't let this deter my commitment or passion for the team, but I need to make sure that I am totally secure in where I live, as it is not at all nice waking up and having to defend your life.

Watson, whose English club Bath suffered defeat in Round One of this season's Heineken Cup, going down 12-11 to French outfit Biarritz on Sunday, was in the news last week when he apologised for mistakes he made while still in South Africa and suggested he'd like to return to the country to make a “constructive contribution” and be a “good role model” for young rugby players.
