Steyn heaps praise on Div

Johannesburg – Frans Steyn can't wait for Saturday when he will run out with the Springbok starting XV at Loftus Versfeld for the first time.

"I have never played there (Loftus) as part of the starting team so I'm really looking forward to it. What makes it even better, is that I know the No 15 jersey is mine and I can play without fear," said the 22-year-old Sharks player.

Steyn described his performance in the first Test in Durban as being "not good" despite earning praise from former Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer.

"With his tremendous kicking boot, Frans forced the Lions onto the back foot and completely neutralised Lee Byrne's attacking ability with the boot," said Meyer.

Steyn was humbled by the praise but admitted on Thursday that he didn't want to start thinking about the second Test just yet.

"I'm not one of those guys who start thinking about matches too far in advance. Closer to Saturday I will start focusing on my task. If I start too early (to focus), I’m worn-out by kick-off."

Bok coach Peter de Villiers received criticism last week for choosing Steyn in the fullback position as the versatile youngster had not played in that position for quite some time.

Steyn, though, has plenty of praise for the Bok coach.

"He supports me. There was justified criticism about my inclusion as fullback because I didn't play there in the Super 14. Guys like Zane Kirchner and Louis Ludik, on the other hand, did very well."

"I understand that people feel they should have been in the team, but Peter is the first Bok coach who was honest with me about where I was going to play and how I fitted into the picture. It makes it much easier to enjoy yourself," Steyn said.

"I know I am the fullback but I also know that Zane is waiting right behind me. And of course, I have to show that the trust in me is justified."

Steyn was also grateful to his team-mates, Bryan Habana and JP Pietersen, for helping him to again find his feet.

"Bryan and JP were a great help and hopefully on Saturday I can pay them back and help where it is needed," said Steyn.

"I have sometimes fallen down, sometimes bloody hard too. You know me by now, I’m not finished falling down yet. But there’s one thing that you can be sure of, I will always get up. And come back tougher."

Steyn feels that he is too impatient to play in the flyhalf position. "I chase after the ball too much. You have to be calm at flyhalf and I'm not. And I also don't want the extra responsibility of playing flyhalf. I play to enjoy the game and don’t need that pressure."

Steyn surprisingly enough, is not looking forward to long drop kicks in the thin air of Loftus. "I don't want to make predictions like that. You can't plan drop kicks in advance, it depends on the situation. If the Lions again play like in the second half in Durban then we will hardly have balls to drop kick."

"It will come if it's there, but I’m not going to hesitate to run from behind if there are gaps."

It,s funny about Div eying Fransie romantically.. And I suspect he is in love with Ruan as well. You could say he has a good taste but then what about Earl?
Anonymous User6/26/2009 6:22 PM
Steyn ur the best!!! good luck for 2mrw :)
Johan H6/26/2009 5:43 PM
Steyn has shown huge potential initially, but has failed to mature, hence his game losing impulsiveness and careless attitude.

Raymond, you are spot on. Everyone who followed the super14 will tell you what a great player Kichner is and what a great series Ludik had. When it comes to Terreblanche, they all will say what a great player he was some years back. I think going with steyn makes better sense for a coach who had to be pressed hard to accept that running rugby doesn't do it for SA.
Raymond6/26/2009 3:59 PM
Steyn saved us against Australia at Newlands with two huge drop kicks.Hope he will do the same tomorrow.I would still like to see Jacque Fourie in midfield ahead of the injured Jacobs. This area is going to be the deciding factor in this Test match.

Where were you @Sharks fan?! Did you miss the last 5 games of the Sharks in the Super 14?! Stephan has fallen out of the bus towards the end of the Super 14 and he cost the Sharks their semi final spot in the Super 14. I agree that Zane Kirscher and Louis Ludik were playing great rugby and they deserve a spot in the Bok team. I just feel that Francois has a bit of magic that will make him excel above the rest!!

HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!

Ag he is a Tosser and a one hit wonder! Stephan outshines him in every way. I heard Div was "eying" Steyn romantically :)
Steve-o6/26/2009 2:07 PM
I think Frans will be great at inside centre, creating gaps for Jean on outside centre. He had a good season for the Sharks at inside centre, playing against the players like Nonu.

DP - It is actually becuase he is an idiot. Firstly he admits he erred with his replacements, 24 hours later he calls the critics fools. Secondly he sees how the big BIL centres run through Jacobs and yet he still keeps this puny undersize centre in the team. J Fourie with his size, pace and defensive skills is surely the better option.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 1:42 PM
Not one person has mentioned that Frans is heading to France to play for 3 years. so whatever position he plays in there will most likely be the position he fills when he returns. Good on DIV to put him at fullback its suits his style, I think hes a great fullback, and a great last line of defense, with his huge boot, would love to see him joining the backline in attack this weekend.
Mr Suction Cap6/26/2009 1:42 PM
Steyn sh...he should be going beyond just saying good things..he hsould start giving parking lot favours as well since we all know that Steyn is a delinquent player...he's not test match standard as he is errant and too unpredictable for this level..so Fransie knock those front teeth out like Div and do it nice and slow..up and down..oh and don't forget to swallow!!!
bokbok6/26/2009 1:05 PM
Sluggy6/26/2009 12:04 PM
Thanks Frans... What words of wisdom... Please, you do not deserve to start a match! As an impact player coming off the bench is the best place for you! Centre is the only position that you are actually suited for! Unfortunately for you, that position is taken! About Frans being a legend??? Far from it! You cant be a legend after 30 caps...
Beefcake6/26/2009 11:54 AM
Im no fan and after 30 caps he's still erratic. PDV will always be an idiot and Steyn is only sucking @ss. Im not saying he's not good but would be better coming off the bench as an impact player at centre or at fullback.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 11:42 AM
Div is a Hypocrite....claiming he doesn't want to play Watson at flank coz it would be unfair on him coz he has not played there whole season, but gives Steyn the duty of fullback when he has not played there.....Come on P Divie just admit it was becoz of Cheeky that you didn't Pick Luke....YOU HYPOCRITE
Mark6/26/2009 11:40 AM
Look, we all know that the players may not, ever, speak out against the coach. You may hear the odd snippet of praise for snor, but really, that would be rare. We all know that he does not have the respect of the players. having said that, I always felt that Frans would make the best full back on the planet - huge boot, and great attacking ability too. Div only just woke up to this - maybe I'd be a better coach? easy.
Jo6/26/2009 11:15 AM
Well said Faffa. Good luck for Saterday, you'll all need it. As someone else said before: "The only thing wrong with SA-rugby is the fact that Schalk Burger's hair is to short and Frans Steyn's to long." :-))
Delan6/26/2009 10:52 AM
Thanks Handogg,
colin6/26/2009 10:28 AM
PDV knows hip players and I am happy that player like Steyn have come to respect PDV.
DP6/26/2009 10:27 AM
@Shakes. Agree 100%. Unfortunately journalist has a large influence on public opinion and the damage has already been done. Nothing Div says or do will in the future will gain him any support among the certain rugby fans.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 10:16 AM
Almost 30 caps and only just 22... He is an exceptional talent and still needs to mature a bit. Imagine what he will be like come next world cup! He acts more like a 26-year old. I know he's a bit erratic, but weren't we all at that age?? Go Frans! Steek hom Steyn! (I think the Lions forwards are looking a bit sluggish. The needed a smaller, faster pack with Powell running at speed... so I'm happy!)
Handogg6/26/2009 10:13 AM
@ Delan Because of his high pitched voice... sounds like he was sucking on a helium baloon.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 10:06 AM
Sho Bafana played well last night.....The visit from the Boks really helped.......Boks all the way......Lions you are in for a thrashin tommorow..Ask Australia
Delan 6/26/2009 9:40 AM
Guys why is PDV called Helium, please update me.
Zander van Taak6/26/2009 9:38 AM
I LOVE YOU FRANSIE
JSC6/26/2009 9:35 AM
Still think he is a better outside centre. Him and Jean de Villiers could become like Peter Whipp and Johan Oosthuizen. Jean breaks the line and Francois sores because he has the power and the speed.
Tim6/26/2009 9:31 AM
The Lions can take a page out of Steyn's book. Humble and respectful of the competition and thats why he has my support! Guys watch the Free State full back in the future! Absolutely brilliant!
Shakes6/26/2009 9:30 AM
Well done JJ for the positive article. You know my criticism of you even if my previous posts were not published. What it tells me is that for all the criticism of PDV his man management skills are right up there with the best of them. Who will forget when he went overseas to chat to JS. Funny though that you just quoted what FS said and did not give an opinion. Scared to be positive about Div, JJ?
Johan6/26/2009 9:28 AM
Jy gaan nog `n legende word!!!!!!!!!!!
Captain6/26/2009 9:19 AM
I also think that Steyn should attack more from behind, he has more to offer than just a devastating kick.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 9:17 AM
Given time Steyn will be our best fullback we have seen in along time. He has the boot and can handle the pressure under the high ball. Well Done Franscois i'm behind you all the way
Anonymous User6/26/2009 9:17 AM
fransie, jy's 'n legend !!
met uysh!6/26/2009 9:01 AM
This is a great article JJ HArmse, thanks for something positive! Go Frans Steyn, you wear that jersey with pride my boy!!!
DG NORTIER6/26/2009 8:59 AM
Vol punte vir Div. 'n Speler moet die 'coach' vertrou.Nick Mallett se sukses en Heynecke was juis daarop gebou. Lekker speel Frans, en Zane sal ook sekerlik in die toekoms sy kans kry.
Telg6/26/2009 8:55 AM
The man is home! He can GROW to be another Andre Joubert. Now enjoy your talent.
Ex-Provincial Fullback6/26/2009 8:36 AM
Yes, Frans Steyn did'nt have a great game last week, but I still feel that he can become a great player in that position. If he is prepared to teachable and do what is expected of a fullback, then S.A. will produce yet another world class fullback. He has all the 'ingredients' that a player in his position needs, it now a matter of how he uses it effectively. I would still like to see Frans penetrating the middle and outside channels and put the wingers away to round off with tries - that's the job of a no.15 and the wings are there to score tries. Good luck for the next test, Frans. Keep on chipping away and do what the situation allows you to do. Make full use of the God-given talent and express yourself out there on the pitch. You can become a big role-model to so many youngsters out there. Carpe Diem. Blessings.
SPRINGBOK FAN6/26/2009 8:36 AM
Ja Steyn, I think you are a wonderful talent, a little hot headed when it comes to making crucial decisions, BUT the only reason you are in the squad is Helium. Like you said others performed better in the S!4 and they rather deserves to be there instead of you !!!!!!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:35 AM
I'm also a fan and I like the fact the PDV has been honest with him. There was always a chance that FS was not going to develop, as he should, because he plays in so many different positions.
Anonymous User6/26/2009 8:34 AM
Very Humble about his opposition, Kirsner and Ludik, well done. We support you Steyn, don't let us down when it matters.
Big R6/26/2009 8:21 AM
Honestly there are only two other options for NR 15, Ludik and Kirchner. Ludik is injured. So we have two. Steyn and Kirchner are two well rounded 15's. Hopefully Zane can bring his Zing back!
Pierre6/26/2009 8:18 AM
Well done with the choise and i wish the Boks the best of luck and we all will be watching here in Africa in the DRC.
George6/26/2009 8:18 AM
Good on you Fransie, best of luck for the game!
poena6/26/2009 8:11 AM
Frans Steyn is n legend! Daar is net een ding fout met Frans en dit is dat hy niks verkeerd kan doen in my oë nie! Hy is die beste!
Anonymous User6/26/2009 7:59 AM
I'm a fan. Keep up the good work. Love Steyn in that position. Go Steyn!!! Go Bokke!!!
