Port Elizabeth - Former England star Mike Catt will put his retirement plans on hold to help injury-hit London Irish next season - and he is also on the provisional list to play for the Southern Kings against the touring British and Irish Lions in Port Elizabeth on June 16.

Catt, who is nearly 38 and a former Lion, has been included in a provisional Southern Kings XV consisting mainly of former players from the Eastern Cape to face the Lions.

The team will be captained by former Springbok flank Solly Tyibilika and includes a numbers of former Springboks and other former Eastern Cape players now plying their trade overseas. Members of the victorious Springboks Seven players have also been included.

The team selected is not final, reports the Port Elizabeth newspaper the Daily Dispatch. It has to be signed off by Southern Kings chief selector and president of the Boland Rugby Union, Francois Davids, and it is uncertain whether all the players are available.

The Dispatch reports that in e-mail correspondence between Southern Kings coach Alan Solomons to Davids, Solomons forwarded the names of players he wants to field which included former and current Border Bulldogs players in scrumhalf Josh Fowles, fullback Tiger Mangweni and lock Lungile Payi.

Apparently not available are Gcobani Bobo (WP), Skipper Badenhorst (Sharks), Fabian Juries (Cheetahs), Hilton Lobberts (WP), Albert van den Berg (Sharks) and Luke Watson (WP).

The launch of the Eastern Cape franchise coincides with the match against the touring Lions.

The Southern Kings team list as forwarded by Solomons is as follows:

Tiger Mangweni, Vuyo Zangqa, Rudi Coetzee, De Wet Barry, Wylie Human, Mike Catt, Neil de Kock, Darren Nel, Solly Tyibilika (captain), Trevor Hall, Ross Skeate, Mpho Mbiyozo, BJ Botha, Hanyani Shimange, Daan Human.

Replacements: Gary Botha, Faan Rautenbach, Lungile Payi, Robbie Diack, Josh Fowles, Mzwandile Stick, Brent Russell.

A blast from the past. What about Werner Greef,Marius Joubert,Hottie Louw.I think that the great Danie Gerber should also have a run as he comes from the Eastern Cape.Expect some good rugby!!!
Sharkie436/5/2009 11:28 AM
And to think that Catt was actually kicked out of the EP side many, many years ago for not being good enough

Glad to see Solly Tyibilika back... One of the better "players of coulor" in our country. Certainly one of my favorits. GO KINGS.

Come on, where is the local talent of EP, Border, SWD & Boland??? They would not do worse than the Golden Lions...
Anonymous User6/4/2009 10:40 PM
Where is good talent from the SWD like Henry Grimes and co.
Tredoshark6/4/2009 9:39 PM
The Sevens players they have selected are not to bad and deserve to play the 15 man game against the lions! There are some legends and some unheard of players?

BOUGHT MY TICKETS THE DAY BOOKING OPENED. NOW THAT I SEE THE TEAM TO PLAY THE LIONS, I SHALL GIVE THE TICKETS AWAY - NOT WORTH GOING TO WATCH A MASSACRE

Where is all the SWD players they deserve to play in that game...... They had a very good Vodacom Cup beating Boland,E.P.,Border and Boland.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 7:24 PM
looks like a legends teams...haha...haha....score: Lions 104 Southern Kings 0...haha...haha
Anonymous User6/4/2009 7:21 PM
Do 90% of these people still play rugby? This is like "what in world happen to..."
Herb6/4/2009 7:16 PM
I just might go see this game. This also gives me an idea...why not have a "Province of Origin" game in the same way the Aussies have their State of Origin games? Get players to come to their home provinces for a round of matches. I'll definitely come see that!! (And then we will see just how much talent really has come out of poor old EC.)
Alien Dude6/4/2009 6:56 PM
GO CHEEKY YOU TWAT......so strange that your son doesn't want to play ????? What a joke........
Boerseun6/4/2009 6:10 PM

Hahahahahah....Southern Kings...??...more like the Barbarian B team....where the heck is our up and coming Eastern Cape talent..??...
glen6/4/2009 5:44 PM
The whole idea of his region is to give the vastly talented ,under priviliged local talent a chance to play at the highest level . They then go and select a Baa Baa's team What is going on ?

After much deliberation we have come up with a Lion's team to play the Southern Spears. 15. Gavin Hastings 14. Rory Underwood 13. Jeremy Guscott 12. Ian McGeechan 11. JPR Williams 10. Phil Bennett 9. John Robbie 8. Mike Teaugue 7. Peter Winterbottom 6. Lawrence Dallaglio 5. Bill Beaumont 4. Martin Johnson 3. Fran Cotton 2. Keith Wood 1. Tom Smith Reserves: 22: Andy Irvine 21: JJ Williams 20: Gareth Edwards 19:Niel Back 18: Niel Jenkins 17: Ieun Evans 16: Gregor Townsend. With this said, we think that this squad selected makes as much sense as what the Southern Spears currently do.

And I thought this was the home of rugby development in SA? The Super 12 and the Sharks in particular destroyed rugby in the Eastern Cape. If you wanted to play Super 12 for the Sharks, you had to play Currie Cup for the Sharks so all the talent left (Chad Alcock, Deon Kayser, ...). EP has never had a competitive team again. Do you remember that EP qualified for the Super 10 when it was based on the top provinces. Northern Transvaal didn't make it! I think the players in the Southern Kings side will remember - some of them were still playing in those years...
Doc6/4/2009 5:14 PM
I thought all the hype around this team was because it's going to be all black. 8 players of colour in the match 22. Malema is going to %$@# himself. And so the saga continues.
Buster6/4/2009 5:05 PM
Geez like guys... you sure love to complain... I think there is one thing that we have to admit, you can't keep everyone happy. Why not for once accept what is given and move on from there once a solid foundation has been made. You all just want miracles and I'm afraid that just doesn't happen in SA Rugby... what would you prefer a team made up of Selborne, Dale & Queens first teams?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 4:36 PM
Will some of those team members be allowed to bring their grandchildren out to watch the game ?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 4:33 PM
ja why not invest in the youth. Still dont understand why the SWD players are also not considered for the Southern Kings. Can someone please expain on behalf of Mr C Watson.
Wayne6/4/2009 4:16 PM
And here I thought it's June and not the 1st of April. ASB laat ons jong manne van die Suid en Oos Kaap hul dinge wys. Al verloor hulle, dit kan seker nie slegter as die Lions van gister-aand wees nie???
Anonymous User6/4/2009 3:57 PM
DISGRACE!, supposed to be a new franchise, all I see is outcasts!
Johan6/4/2009 3:56 PM
What about giving Danie Craven a run? I dont think Louis Luyt would let down this team.
Gordon6/4/2009 3:49 PM
Hmmm..................this is an expensive line up for 80 minutes for these 22. Will they all get the same appearance money? I see a lot of public scrapping going on between the ou manne mercenaries overseas vs. the local players of colour. An expensive line up to bring them here for a game and then what? By all accounts there is no money for the local EC franchise.
wanda6/4/2009 3:47 PM
Living in East London its a shame to see all the former Bulldogs in this team. Somebody's gotta do something and make the dogs come back to the kennel and we might just see the Border rugby Ground(ABSA Stadium) fill up again and we have something to smile about once again. Good luck to the Kings
Navarac6/4/2009 3:44 PM
How come they've left out Naas Botha?
Anonymous User6/4/2009 3:32 PM
Buster...Sounds like a good ol prop with Barndy and coke!
James6/4/2009 3:30 PM
Is the "Soutern Old Kings" a SARU sponsered old age home for retired rugby players?
jonno6/4/2009 3:29 PM
southern queens are a cheeky idea of a joke
sollie6/4/2009 3:28 PM
WTF - some serious comebacks
Anonymous User6/4/2009 3:24 PM
So much was said about the Eastern Cape being the breeding ground for new, young talent.(Cheeky) Most of the team sheet are discards or grandpa's. C'mon guys play the youngsters as promised.
Buster6/4/2009 3:18 PM
I can't wait to see this team play... doesn't look half bad!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 3:17 PM
Not 2 bad, not 2 bad at all
