Two week ban (File)

Johannesburg - British and Irish Lions lock Simon Shaw was banned for two weeks on Sunday after being cited for dangerous play during a 28-9 Test victory over South Africa.

Shaw struck the back of Springboks scrumhalf Fourie du Preez with his knee three minutes before half-time in the third and final Test at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Australian referee Stuart Dickinson sent Shaw to the sinbin, the incident was noted by citing officer Steve Hinds of New Zealand, and the veteran England forward appeared before judicial officer Alan Hudson of Canada on Sunday.

The Lions lost the series against the world champions 2-1 after going down 26-21 in Durban and 28-25 in Pretoria on the previous two weekends.

Simon Shaw could have ended Fourie du Preez's rugby career on Saturday... ..and he only got 2 weeks...!! ...useless IRB...!!

Actually Tim, well done you win. Dam i should not have lowered the tone. Lets pack this in.it must be horrible for those poor souls in the east end. Im going to have a cuppa and look out across the beautiful green fields of Yorkshire from top level of my converted Barn. Then stroll down to the local pub and have a pint of bitter, which next to the fresh water trout river. Bye then

To the big brave man (teenager) who wrote such an inciteful comment (in more ways than one) you show yourself up for the white trash you truly are. My comment has just been vindicated by your diatribe. As for the comment about my girlfriend running off with a pom, maybe if you lot had a set of balls, brain cells and class it would be even remotely funny. I have a life peewee thats why I'm on a South African website, not some tabloid low class british website, where you clearly belong. I find it amusing that you call me dumb, rather pompous little man. Now run off to your shitty little flat in the east end and hang out with your shav friends little man (in more ways than one). I clearly hit a nerve didn't I? You must be the snotty nosed zit faced little teenager that got deported back to that hovel of an island for trying to shag a donkey while you were drunk on holiday on a Greek island...

@Tim..why so bitter my friend? Your chick run off with a Pom? You fed up with people piering into you little world. GET A LIFE. people are free to surf the net, read what they like and say what they want. Its called DEMOCRACY you dumb F****.

Let's not forget that he threw his 120kg mass - knees first - into the scrumhalfs kidneys. Effectively taking the guy out of the game. Methinks he deserves a ban. How is that the same as Bakkies' legal "through the gates" clearout?
Tim7/6/2009 10:18 AM
lionkings and pothale what a joke... Are you tired of reading the tabloids? It always amazes me that you people come onto a South African website and drop comments. Its so pathetic and childish, trying to get a response like a pimple faced teenager... Whats wrong isn't the journalism good enough in the UK for you? Are you tired of reading about how you could have won the series and how the poms should have won the last world cup? The little bit of respect I had for the Uk has been lost after the arrogance of the players, coaching staff and supporters. No wonder the rest of Europe hates it when the masses of chavs come to their shores during the summer.

Has lost all respect for the Lions. They are starting to act like some of the football players diving and falling all over the place. This is a contact sport where one person is measured against another person for his speed, agility and STRENGTH. So to all the Northern hemisphere teams. Please don't try and make this sport into a "P******" game. We love it because of the contact and physical structure. If you guys cannot handle it, well maybe you should just stick to soccer and maybe ballet.

Sooooo blinding a guy is the end of the world but possibly crippling a player and ending his career is a two week ban. Double standards rock!
sme7/6/2009 7:58 AM
We are the Japies (as far as the Aussie & AB refs are concerned) and if we do not stand-up for ourselves who will. When I listen to some ,most, of our so-called rugby commentators and administrators, I can understand why we are treated like a backward lot, they sing the oppositions praises whether deserved or not and will very seldom comment on infringements made by the opponents and dubious decisions by refs and FLAGMEN. Who needs Cobus, Joel, Matthew, Hugh,Garth etc. Oh..and Bryce

if you look closely at all the footage of the last two tests, you will see that this wasnt the first, not the second but the thrid time simon shaw did exactlyu that. knees in. Sure it was not in somebodies back, but if you are too lazy to tackle someone, dont go and hurt them...thats just not how we should play rugby and it is setting a bad example too all the youngsters watching the series
Jeff Aucamp7/6/2009 7:27 AM
How that act of cowardness recieves the same punishment as Bakkies legal clean out defies belief. This is one more example of the IRB's double standards when dealing with the world champions.Congratulations to the Boks for seeing off the challenge of the combined strength of four nations.Given a chance the Bulls would have done the same.
Brunt7/5/2009 10:43 PM
As a Bok's fan I have to put my hands up and say the Lions were a match for us. They could easily have won the series. Master plan was to play at altitude as that gave us 16 men to their 15!
JB7/5/2009 9:22 PM
Justice! Typical Pommie pondlife... will attack from behind.
pothale7/5/2009 9:00 PM
Del - you had to field your B team? PdV decided to field a number of young players. He put experienced players on the bench just in case. And he put out the midfield line that many Boks fans felt should have been out there in the first place. The back 3 were the weakest point. The Lions had 5 of their first-teamers absent as well, don't forget. You had to give the Lions an intercept try and have one disallowed for the Lions to win? Don't think so. That would still have made the score 21-16 to the Lions. You won the series fair and square - 2-1. One team wanted the third test more. Get over it and stop whinging - as you like to say to Lions fans.
Molefe7/5/2009 6:59 PM
I have to agree with Deonic. I have done a LOT worse playing rugby. And afterwards had a beer with the other guy, no hard feelings. My problem is that everybody should be judged the same. Treated the same. The fact that Bakkies got banned means the they HAD to ban Shaw. Both players can feel wronged though. This IS rugby after all. Not Touch Rugby.
Del7/5/2009 6:40 PM
Can't wait to see the back of the BIL supporters - what a bunch of w)*&kers. Can't win a series in SA - we had to field our B team, give them an intercept try and have a legal try by the Boks disallowed by the blind TMO before they could beat us. Then they enter into racist behaviour on the stands while wallowing in their lone, hollow victory. Oh, no, they will be back next year for the soccer - shit!!
Graham7/5/2009 5:55 PM
What about the rest of the sitings of Lion's players that he missed in the last 2 tests. If Bakkie's challenge was illegal in the previous test then at least 10 players should have been cited yesterday. What a joke!!!
Jan7/5/2009 5:44 PM
That is a bit harsh. Rugby is a contact sport, isn't it?
deonic7/5/2009 5:18 PM
He has not done any more than what I have done in two decades of playing rugby. There is no clear intent. These citing officials are losing the plot. Bakkies should not have been banned and neiter should Shaw. Two wrongs don't make a right! The game is not for sissies! Can't they cite our coach? He he he
LionKings7/5/2009 5:15 PM
Lets all mince around in armbands at the terrible injustice of this banning..... or maybe not. We'll leave the real cheating and the cry baby stuff to the Boks - best team in the world? You're having a laugh!
RG7/5/2009 5:10 PM
A two week ban at the end of the tour and the end of the NH season. It may as well be three months - he is going to spend it with his feet up drinking cheap ale at any rate! His knee was deliberate and effectively eliminated the Boks top player. Just another bad Lions sportsman who got away with it!
Boerseun7/5/2009 5:03 PM
A great injustice to a great player.
Molefe7/5/2009 4:19 PM
Fair enough.
