Pretoria – A new-look centre combination could be take to the field when the South African XV plays a Namibian side in a practice match ahead of the British and Irish Lions series.
Shock inclusion Morgan Newman, could be named on Wednesday in the South African line-up for the Windhoek match, if a host of Boks fail to shake off their injuries.
Sharks centre Adrian Jacobs (shoulder) didn’t practice on Monday or Tuesday at the University of Pretoria while Stormers centre Jean de Villiers is gradually working his way back to full fitness.
Meyer Bosman and Newman, hoping to impress the Bok selectors, gave their all during training.
Bosman was only included in the practice group on Sunday while Newman’s involvement with the team appears to have more to do with his development.
The two youngsters have a good chance for selection given that Jaque Fourie (wedding), Frans Steyn (injured) and Wynand Olivier (Bulls obligation) are also all out of contention for a place.
“We still need to ave a look at the aches and pains of certain players before we can appoint a starting team. The practice was tough but it went well,” said Bok coach Peter de Villiers.
De Villiers will also have to decide whether to give Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow a chance in order to give Schalk Burger a little more time to rest.
Burger watched the practice sessions from the sidelines.
The plan is to allow all 24 players a chance to play in Friday’s match, should their fitness allow.
The SA XV leaves for Namibia on Thursday.
