Pretoria - He cannot pick himself for the Springboks, even if he wants to.
That is why Bulls fullback Zane Kirchner is not getting carried away by the possibility of pulling the Green and Gold over his head later this year.
Kirchner has been staking a claim for a place in the squad for the series against the British and Irish Lions with his impressive performances.
“I don’t pick the side, so it’s not in my hands. What I can do is make sure I do my bit for the Bulls on Saturdays. That is the focus,” said Kirchner.
There is little doubt that the injuries to Frans Steyn and Conrad Jantjes has stimulated a lot of interest about South Africa’s fullback berth. Kirchner’s name is being increasingly mentioned.
“It’s always disappointing to hear of other players’ injuries, but that that does not influence me. I believe I’m doing my bit for the Bulls, though there is always room for improvement,” he said.
Kirchner was invited to the Springboks’ first training camp of last year, but had to withdraw because of injury.
“That call was good for my confidence because any player dreams of the jersey,” he said.
“I did not see this year’s Super14 as one that should pave my way into the Springbok side. My goal was to first establish myself at this level and ensure I’m comfortable in what I do.”
Kirchner, who moved to the Blue Bulls from Griquas at the end of 2007, learned the hard way what Super rugby is all about.
He was suspended for three weeks because of a spear tackle, but has not done much wrong this year.
His massive kicking boot is a big factor in the Bulls’ aerial attacks and he has scored three tries this year.
“I am more calm this year because I had no idea what to expect last season. It also helps that we are performing a great deal better,” said the 24-year-old.
