Golden Lions hammered

One big cat fight (Gallo)

Johannesburg - Perhaps the British and Irish Lions coach Ian McGeechan does not have as many problems as Springbok coach Peter de Villiers intimated earlier in the week.

McGeechan’s side ran out 74-10 winners over the Golden Lions at Coca-Cola Park on Wednesday night, and scored ten tries against a side that hardly resembled a first-class outfit.

However, despite the lack of quality opposition, the British Lions looked a better, more motivated side since the win they scraped against the Royal XV on Saturday and there was enough promise to indicate that they have made huge strides in the few days since that rather disappointing show that prompted De Villiers’ remark.

De Villiers was in the limelight for another reason and Earl Rose, withdrawn from the Golden Lions bench hours before the kick off in another controversial and somewhat churlish move by De Villiers, would ironically have had nearly a full match against the tourists.

Golden Lions fullback Louis Ludik was stretchered off with a knee injury in the sixth minute. Shandre Frolick was the replacement for Rose on the bench after the Golden Lions would not accede to the request from De Villiers to change their starting line-up in order for Rose to start.

Within five minutes of Ludik’s departure, both the Lions centres, Man of the Match Jamie Roberts and Brian O’Driscoll, had scored. Two breaks by O’Driscoll were responsible for the scores, and at 14-0 after 11 minutes the visiting Lions were in control and two Stephen Jones penalties made it 20-3 after Andre Pretorius had replied for the Golden Lions.

The tourists, hesitant and uncertain on Saturday against the Royal XV, looked sharper in their second match albeit against a side that, especially in the first half, seemed somewhat disinterested in proceedings.

The British Lions ran good lines, supported well and did everything at full pace. And, again with a proviso about the opposition, it was clear that they do, in fact, have exciting backs.

British Lions defensive coach Shaun Edwards, so unhappy about the three tries his charges leaked on Saturday, would have been pleased with the pressure of his backs on the opposition, and also in the way tackled ball was turned around even before formation of rucks.

Against a Golden Lions side that seldom had enough players at the point of breakdown, it was however difficult to gauge their physicality at the rucks, something the tourists regard as very important with a view to the Tests.

With the home side barely getting a touch of the ball, the scoreline of 20-3 was increased after another midfield break by Roberts who moved he ball to right wing Tommy Bowe who fed Ugo Monye on the left. At 25-3 after 21 minutes the word hapless applied in its fullest sense.

It became worse as the scoreline increased to 32-3 after another polished try, this one from Tom Croft.

Still the home side struggled to get decent possession, but with barely three minutes to go Frolic scored a well-constructed try under the posts after good word from Doppies la Grange and Cobus Grobbelaar.

The British Lions, however, went back onto attack and seemingly just went through some training maul moves before moving it wide after a few phases for Roberts to score his second. With Jones again on target, it was 39-10 at the break.

A brace by Tommy Bowe in the first 20 minutes of the second half, both converted by Stephens, saw the British Lions go through the 50-point barrier, and Moye rubbed it in with a try after 30 minutes (60-10).

Two long-range tries – the last by Stephen Ferris after some crunching tackles by the British side that brought a turnover that would have pleased Edwards – saw the score grow to 74-10.

How much of the disappointing performance by the Golden Lions should be pout down to the off-fields goings-on relating to the firing of their coach Eugene Eloff last weekend, is uncertain. What is clear, however, is that something will have to be done before the Currie Cup season and next year’s Super 14 or the paltry 22 000 crown will diminish further even for big matches.

Scorers:

Golden Lions: Try: Shandre Frolick, Conversions: Andre Pretorius

British Lions: Tries: Jamie Roberts (2), Brian O’Driscoll, Ugo Monye, Tom Croft, James Hook, Stephen Ferris. Conversions: Stephen Jones (6), Hook (3).

Penalties: Jones.

'Hammered' seems rather a mild term for what transpired...?

All you people who says it was a disgrace watching that rugby match, You should have run out on that field and face the B&I Lions... I bet you would have cr@pped in your pants everytime you got the ball and won't even know where to run to...
Anonymous User6/5/2009 1:30 AM
They are called the British and Irish Lions, not the British Lions! How would you like it if the Springboks were referred to as the Namibian Sprinkboks
Brons6/4/2009 6:12 PM
read most the comments first of all Loffie should not have been the only person fired but also the management team his 4 year plan for the lions was rubbish because it never materialised also there is no value for holding season tickets i contacted xerox today and asked them to collect there machines from my offices any company still sponsering the lions after that performance doesnt need my money
skywalker6/4/2009 5:52 PM
It's a tragedy that ER did not play...churlish Piet got lucky again..!!
Mike6/4/2009 4:27 PM
You guys are being unfair. I thought the Lions dominated the half time break. What the Lions need desperately is not a new coach but 2 new locks one for the front gate and one for the back gate. The union should demand that these players also pay entrance fees seeing as they came to watch the British Lions. Having said all of that there were moments of brilliance from the Lions especially the way they shook hands with the opposition at the end. Best non of the players write "I played for the Lions on their CV's " rather say I am a cash in transit heister.
nic6/4/2009 2:52 PM
to Loopy The only thing I think that will happen at GLRU is that they will look at the money made on the stadium, look on the money saved by good players leaving the union, and decide they are making good profit, so they will prob all end up with bonuses. Before the management at the GLRU does not change, we will always stay where we are now, sad but true. I just can't believe that it can be that difficult to change the management of a rugby union!

Michael6/4/2009 2:33 PM
The GL suck. Where is the depth. Taking Rose out before game shows Div will use him at all costs. If Rose had of played Div would not have been able to have him in squad. You cant put all the blame on the GL players, the management has to take the most flak and should be ashamed of that performance.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 2:28 PM
Earl Rose is the worst fullback in SA! Did him and de Villiers hook up over some fish and chips and that was that?? I feel sick just thinking about him starting for SA!!
Loopy6/4/2009 2:01 PM
I was one of the GL supporter who attended the game last night and needless to say was very dissapointed. I have read all the above comments and am in agreement with all them My concern is however will anything be done to change the very good concerns of all the FAITHFULL Lion supporters who in the essence are the life blood of any good performing team, without them there is no gate, no money, etc The sponsers should be stepping in here and start putting the squeese on where it hurts most !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johnny6/4/2009 12:27 PM
Is Hans Coetzee now also going to be fired..?? Fire Jannie Ferreira and his clowns instead...!!
Julian6/4/2009 11:38 AM
I’m British and obviously very pleased with last nights performance by the BI Lions. But I am sure their camp will have a little perspective here. They will be well aware that the G Lions did not turn up last night and their performance made a good display from the tourists look like a great one. Please take my word for it as a British and Irish Lions supporter, we are well aware that the test series will be totally different from last night! Also, when the tour is over, no-one on either side is going to be talking about last nights game, it’ll be the tests that will define the tour and on the basis of last night we could have an excellent series on our hands, here’s hoping. Considering that few people over here in Britain had high expectations (after New Zealand 4 years ago and the fall from Grace of England and Scotland weakening the pool of players) it is looking like a great tour. Bring it on.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 11:30 AM
2Tickets to the match : R500. Petrol to get there R300.Food n Drinks R200. Witnessing the G-Lions Getting whipped and hearing my own echo in the stands : R1000 wasted.
PenPusher6/4/2009 11:24 AM
I am not even going to comment on the performance of the G-Lions last night. What I want to say though is that the price of the tickets Is an absolute disgrace.Charging 250bucks for a mid week mach.Com on.I DONT KNOW WHAT WAS MORE EMBARRASSING, THE FINAL SCORE or THE EMPTY STANDS. How many people truly have that kind of money.Reduce the PRICES then at least whe will only be ashamed of the G-Lions performance.A full house might even get them palying!!!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 11:14 AM
Good shot. Its good to see a lily-white rugby team in this country getting their asses handed to them! Did any of you see how the patched-up Royal XV performed with its multiracial line-up?

Leslie6/4/2009 10:14 AM
I would like to thank the Golden Lions and SA Rugby for stealing my money on Wednesday evening. I have never in my whole life seen such a piss-poor display from a rugby team, than what the Golden Lions produced on Wednesday evening against the B/I Lions. To charge people R250 a ticket and then to make such fools of yourself and us is absolutely ridicules, and I want my money back. If the team didn’t want to play, you could have cancelled the game and refunded us the money instead of stealing it with such poor rugby. Of cause I won’t get a reply back and will be ignored, as the Golden Lions should bury its head in shame!!!
Paul C6/4/2009 9:37 AM
Absolutely pathetic GOLDEN LIONS!! You are a disgrace for South African rugby! This is the result of appointing coaches who simply could not deliver - LOFFIE had three years (he could not even managed to better the LIONS SUPER 14 LOG POSITIONS during the three years!). COETZEE (current coach) .... who is he? Good Heavens ... GLRU EXECUTIVES ... what are doing to the once proud TRANSVAAL! Please GLRU EXECUTIVE ... please remove yourself from the GLRU Rugby fraternity ... YOU DON'T DESERVE TO BE THERE!!
Gerhard6/4/2009 9:33 AM
A shameful, disgraceful, spineless performance by a bunch of palookas! As a lifelong Transvaal/Lions supporter I can only say that this bunch is a absolute disgrace to the game of rugby, their supporters and their country. The once powerful and proud union has become a troop of baboons who belong in a sircus. The day that you will be playing in an EMPTY stadium is not far away. You rotten lot should be ashamed of yourselves. You have now lost another lifetime supporter who will NEVER EVER pay another cent to watch you clowns.
Gerald6/4/2009 9:25 AM
Jake White is, always was and always will be, an a** hole. He didn't win us the world cup, Eddie Jones did. Having said that, the GLRU were idiots to get rid of Loffie. He should at least have been given a chance until the end of the domestic season. Not taking anything away from the brilliant play by the B&I Lions, but had Loffie been in charge last night, I am sure the GL would have put up a far better display than they ultimately did.
Grant6/4/2009 9:24 AM
I think they fired the wrong person by firing Loffie, it looks like they should have fired the players. I years to come they are going to hang their heads in shame in not having taken the opportunity to put in a good show against the B&I lions.
Mike6/4/2009 9:15 AM
With a heavy heart I say, call a meeting of Management and GL Lion players and agree to call it a day. You have all performed miserably over the years but last night's performance and the circumstances leading up to the firing of the coach tells me there is greed, corruption and incompetence of such a scale that it will make your hair curl. Turn the "Cool Drink" stadium into a Shopping mall - The glory has gone forever.
Alan6/4/2009 9:09 AM
Good point Jaco - with Earl @ Foolback, the Boks will be starting with 14 players. Maybe Div thinks that we are good enough to play without a fullback? But on the UK Lion's display last night, maybe Div should go a little easy on the mountain cabbages.
assegaai6/4/2009 9:03 AM
Andre Pretoruis get getting worse and worse, he was useless last night and scared to be tackled...
Anonymous User6/4/2009 9:03 AM
Absolutely PATHETIC display by the Xerox lions. If Loffie was still there, the team wold have played like they did in the S14, which was pretty good rugby. So well done Lions Misadministrators - you brought this shameful display on yourselves. As for the BI Lions - well done - some good moves, and showing a lot of promise! Clearly old Pot Smokin Div put his foot in it again with his remarks!
Anonymous User6/4/2009 9:01 AM
If you look at the history of the Lions(SA) team and the Cats before that there is only one conclusion. The Management of that union must go !Remember before they became A&G Lions there were a time where they had no sponsorship at all ? What they did last week to the coaching staff is just totally unprofessional. Then Ferreira claimed it was him that convinced the players to go on the field last night.
Airwolf6/4/2009 8:51 AM
Maybe Pieter de Villiers knows something we don't after all! Look what happens to the Golden Lions when you remove Earl Rose! ha ha ..I am sure the touring Lions are looking forward to getting tested better before they face the Boks.
Mark6/4/2009 8:47 AM
The Lions were woeful but what do expect when you fire a popular coach and replace him with a schoolboy coach? Fire the management and bring back Loffie. I just wish Earl 'I have no clue about rugby" Rose was playing so that the B&I Lions could have shown us all just how useless he really is.
jaco6/4/2009 8:44 AM
if a rugby union's house is not in order dont let them play against international teams - it is a disgrace to SA Rugby and was very humiliating - i think the golden lions did not even want to pitch up and play - i hope the springboks want to because they emmediately only have 14 players - Rose will be fullback in the starting line up
Nikki6/4/2009 8:37 AM
Their/BI Lions midfield combinations are outstanding! They had the moves last night & ran circles around the Lions in midfield & from broken play. PDV take note: Our midfield will need to be as solid as a rock! Que Olivier & Jean! Sorry Golden Lions, your defence last night was APPALING! First time tackles non-existent! I just feel for quality players like Ludick, J Vermaak & Cobus Grobbelaar in a team like that! Suddenly I am WAY more excited to see them meet the Boks! If they play like last night it's gonna be a BRUISER of a test series! Go Boks!!

Dear Craig Joubert I would just like to thank you for your referee performance for this game. Although my team would've won anyway, you made it possible for us to embarrass the Golden Lions. Thank you for allowing play to continue when we knock the ball on, and allowing forward passes. Thank you for your decisions at the breakdown area, where some of our players didn't even bother getting on side before entering from the side nevermind through the gate and letting us win the ball off our feet. Thank you for letting us get another chance at a lineout that we throw in quickly and forward. Thank you for letting us interfere with their line out jumpers in the air. Thank you for also letting us run obstructively. Thank you for calling the Lion's second try forward, making it an even bigger win. Thank you for letting us get away with all the high tackles. Like I said before, we would've won anyway due to the Lions average performance, but it's because of refs like you that makes matters worse for them for being on the wrong end of your decisions.
Barry6/4/2009 7:51 AM
Remind me again, didn't most of the players in this Xerox Lions play in the super 14, that was by far the MOST PATHETIC dsiplay of Rugby i have ever seen......... To all those Xerox Lions supporters, all i can say is ggod luck for this season, your gonna more than need it... :(:( Last nite was a sad day in rugby to watch a super 14 team take that type of beating..... and that after watching the super 14 only 4 days earlier...... one might say that was the two sides to South African rugby.. the good the bad and the damn ugly...
Burgiesburnin6/4/2009 7:46 AM
I was at the game last night, come on, was this a ploy to avoid giving the B & I Lions a fair run out, makes you think, doesnt it? I dont think that we will be hearing much more from Smit prior to the first test. His comments about the GL giving the tourists a roughing up just shows that his perception of the GL ability must make you wonder what he considers a good team. I hope that the Boks at least give the tourists a half decent training session, its a shame to have come all this way for nothing.
Riaan6/4/2009 7:40 AM
Ek moet nou alweer my 3de tv gaan koop.
DW6/4/2009 7:27 AM
As a Golden Lions supporter, I feel terribly ashamed when people ask me what team do I support. Last year you guys got into the finals of the currie cup, but if you played with glory, you guys could have won the currie cup! This years super 14 was a joke! WIn one match in the start, wonderful! Then its loose loose then they one a match with great victory, then I though, cool, they are back. Yeah right. They have no motivation, they are playing like you don't want to win! Re-look at the coaching and the management of the team, as there are some good players in the team. Embarrasing!!!!
Neil H6/4/2009 7:22 AM
Very classy performance by the B&I Lions, the Golden Lions lacked everything, no defense, no dominating set moves, and I would have thought that they would try the driving maul, outplayed totally, hopefully the Free State Cheetahs can turn it around.
Maarten6/4/2009 7:21 AM

Jake White was a good coach - but "Jake White and His Winning Ways"??? They suggested that Loffie Eloff be removed - and look at the result! Why in God's name didn't they recommend the removal of the management team? Perhaps SARU should step in!!! Anyone hiring Jake White's Winning Ways must be out of their minds!!
AJ6/4/2009 6:44 AM
I dont think PDV actually wanted Rose to play this match at all (making him start was just an excuse). He knows the inclusion in Boks was controversial, making him part of this farce by the Xerox lions would have made it worse for both of them and shown Rose to be incapable.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 6:29 AM
And they fired Loffie for what again!?something to do with a underperforming team?To the Fools Golden Lions Manigement get use to that score this is going to be a long season.U are a disgrace, even if u didn,t play Rosieboy
Jakes6/4/2009 6:27 AM
All honours to the B&I Lions, but also, what a shocking poor performance by the Gauteng Lions! No defence, no attack, no ball.I think the GL must now dig deep, and fire those fat cats, whether it is management or players. One point to consider: Frans Ludeke was not able to do zero with the Gauteng Lions team, and look what he did for the Bulls in one season.Do you still think it is the coach Eloff that is solely responsible for the woes of the Lions?
Hans6/4/2009 6:26 AM
Lions with pride against a pride of lions.
Anonymous User6/4/2009 6:17 AM
Gutless, spineless, leaderless - that sums up the Xerox Lions. Ruthless & classy - B&I Lions Earl would have made a difference - another 10 - 15 points for the B I Lions

I hope the management and coaching staff of Golden Lions, other provincial rugby teams and those PDV doom prophets, learned a valuable lesson out of the rugby game last night. Players that have been selected in any Springbok squad, does not matter who it is, MUST be given an opportunity to start any rugby game, other than tests, at all times . This is not the first time that this kind of request was posted to provincial rugby coaches. There are many well-known cases where the national coach has earmarked a player for a particular position and subsequently requested the provincial coaches to play those players in positions that might not fit into their respective plans. These requests were always adhered to in most cases. For example, some still believe that Brian Habana is a better centre, John Smit a better hooker, Ruan Pienaar a better scrumhalf, Stefan Terblanch a better wing .... and the list can go on forever. Many rugby supporters and administrators appear to have very short memories. There are obvious favourites within the Golden Lions camp. In last night’s game, the real quality of certain preferred players were exposed in a rugby game against a WORLD CLASS British and Irish rugby side. Many players had an opportunity to display there talent but failed to do so. This just proves that our domestic competition and maybe the Super 14 is not as good as what we want to believe it is. It might just be that our rugby players are possibly equally bad. The lesson is to stick to NATIONAL selection policy and not self-interest or making emotional decisions due to favourite rugby players not making representative squads. We all trust that SARU will address this well advocated policy as a matter of urgency.
Viljoen6/4/2009 1:30 AM
After Dr Louis Luyt left the lions everything has fallen to pieces. The lions management needs to take the blame. I feel ashamed to be a lions supporter when they are called the A & G Lions. where has the pride gone???
Anonymous User6/3/2009 11:49 PM
The problem with the "Golden" Lions - their MANAGEMENT - not the players, not the staff and coach. Maybe time for the heads to roll to get the side back to the old glory days. The fish rots from the head...

Hein..aforementioned at 10.18 pm above has said what would be my repeated verbal tirade on yet again another outrageous decision of the Golden Lions management to sack Eugene Eloff at the crucial moment of maintaining the teams morale to confront the B & I Lions, a momentous challenge.. after they probably played some of the most attractive rugby in the latter stages of the Super 14 by far ! Being a "pom" and having played first class club rugby in the UK in the 60's era, I cannot tolerate the continuing Golden Lions style management now prolonged since the Luyt era ! shameful for those talented younger players to endure to ! enough said......

I too am a Golden Lions supporter and totally feel that they need to be relugated to the minors. It's time they play for the glory not for the money. Today was the most shameful day in the history of Transvaal/Lions history. You fired the coach now fire the players, they do not deserve to wear our colours.
Ashley6/3/2009 10:56 PM
The Golden Lions were shameful tonight in their performance against the Real Lions. Fact is they were on a hiding to nothing after the past weeks happenings in the boardroom. Blame for this poor performance should be laid squarely at the door of the administrators who in less than a week managed to stuff up things completely by calling in Jake White to do there dirty work, fired the coach & got onto the players wrong side. ALL OF THIS IN ONE WEEK! They brought in a schoolboy coach (amateur) to coach a professional outfit. What did they expect after that? A professional, motivated & eager team? The entire management team should be sacked & kick Jake as far away as possible because he's nothing but trouble.
Xristaki6/3/2009 10:32 PM
That was the worst performance i have seen in a long long long time may i please have a refund from each player as well as the GLRU. Its one of the greatest honours for the players but they showed as much heart as the cowardly lion from the wizard of oz an ABOMINATION i tell you.

Been a Golden Lions supporter all my life and I will stay one until I die but tonight I am ashamed to be one. Sadly it has to be said the Golden era we once knew are now well and truly forgotten. It will take some serious convincing to try and tell anyone that hasn't seen the Lions in action before that they once were quite a good side which produced lots of springboks....If anything they will laugh at you and look at you in disbelieve especially if they have witnessed tonight’s display....Pathetic performance I have now come accustomed too, don’t even know why I hoped and thought they could win tonight….

I hope that the Golden Lions management team (and Jake White) are very proud of what they achieved - demolishing a once proud rugby province. I certainly do not blame the players for this record loss, management had it coming and the only honourable thing for tham to do would be to resign with immediate effect. They are a total shame to the South African rugby spectators for the way they manage (mismanage) the Lions franchise. Maybe SA Rugby (read Oregan Hoskins) should step in and get rid of the rotten apples. But alas I am afraid it's to late - the danage has been done and the people that will suffer from this is firstly the players and secondly the handfull of loyal spectators that still take the trouble to go and watch a game at the tin can stadium. If I had anything to do with Coca Cola, I would have csncelled my sponsorship because I would be ashamed to be assoxiated with such an organisation.

Whilst we say well done to the real Lions - let's also be honest that the so-called Golden Lions were nothing short of disgraceful. To think that they had the opportunity of playing one of the world's greatest teams - a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of the playeys, yet they dished up a disinterested, gutless display of diabolical rugby. A total disgrace. Have they no pride in their jersey or their country. Non-committed tackling, clueless on attack - even the commentators felt they just 'didn't pitch up". To all of you at the golden Lion - players and management - hang your heads in shame!
