Div chooses his Boks

2009-06-01 18:50

Johannesburg - The Springbok squad for the 2009 British and Irish Lions Series was announced by South African Rugby Union president Oregan Hoskins and national coach Peter de Villiers on Monday evening at Montecasino.

The Emerging Springbok side was also named.

The 28-man squad includes one newcomer in Blue Bulls flyhalf Morné Steyn. The selection also marks the return to the Springbok squad of Sharks prop Deon Carstens and Blue Bulls centre Wynand Olivier, both of whom last played for the Boks in 2007.

The other uncapped squad member is Lions flyhalf Earl Rose, who toured Europe with the Springbok team in 2008 but did not play.

Sharks flyhalf Ruan Pienaar and utility back Frans Steyn, who have been recovering from injury in recent weeks, are included in the group.

The squad includes ten players from the Bulls’ victorious Super 14 squad. No less than 25 members of the squad that toured Wales, Scotland and England at the end of last year were included again.

The Springboks will face the Lions in three Tests– in Durban on June 20, Pretoria on June 27 and Johannesburg on 4 July.

The national selectors have also confirmed the Emerging Springbok team that will face the Lions at Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday, June 23. No player who has appeared for the Springboks was considered for this team.

The bulk of the squad featured for their respective franchises during the Super 14. Former SA Schools captain, Dewald Potgieter of the Blue Bulls, will captain the Emerging Boks.

Springbok assistant coach Dick Muir will coach the team alongside assistants Jerome Paarwater and Stanley Raubenheimer.

Hy is so kwota soos hulle kom.

  • Chrisdup - 2009-06-01 18:59

WTF ???????????? Earl Rose ????? Sorry to say but PDV is smoking something, and it is no good for him.

  • James - 2009-06-01 18:59

Can not believe Rose, Chilliboy and January was picked before players like Kirchner, Tereblanche and Heinrich Brussow. Brussow can really feel cheated.....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:02

Earl Rose better than Stefan Terblanche?????? WTF!!! God help us!

  • Stevo - 2009-06-01 19:07

No Stefan? No Zane?? PLEEEEEEEAAAAAAASE don't put Rose in 15! I can't bear to watch...

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:07

Where is Heinrich Brussouw in this picture???

  • Etienne - 2009-06-01 19:07

    out of this group here is the best team 15. F Steyn 14. JP 13. Fourie 12 Olivier 11 Habana 10 M Steyn 9 Fourie DP 8 Spies 7 Smith 6 Burger 5 Matfield 4 Botha 3 Smith 2 Bismarck 1 Guthro 16. Ralepele 17. Beast 18. Danie Rossouw 19. Kanko 20. Pienaar 21 De Villiers 22 Nokwe

  • Kobus Loubser - 2009-06-01 19:07

  • Mark Rostron - 2009-06-01 19:09

What an amazing pool of talent is available in South african rugby that we can have two teams with that much quality run onto the park and still have room for a third. Watching from a pub in London I hope we give the Lions a snotklap! Go Bokke!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:11

Wat die hel soek Earl Rose daar???

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:11

Earl Rose in both squads? How many times does Div need to see how rubbish he is? 3 fullbacks in the emerging boks side. The 2 best players in that position over the current season, Stefan Terblanche and Zane Kirchner, arent even in the bok squad. (At least Zane is in the Emerging team) Ricky, count yourself lucky after a below average season. When you play the Lions, you put your best 15 on form in that side. I hope this doesnt come back to bite the BOKS. (as history has shown) Forwards should hopefully dominate. What a great pack! Surely the best in World Rugby at the moment COME ON THE BOKKE!

  • robert barrie - 2009-06-01 19:13

What must Derek Minnie still do to proof that he is by far the best?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:14

why is earl rose in both teams? and where is heinrich brussouw?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:15

Good for Morne Steyn. Pity Brussow and Johan Muller was not included in the 'Bok squad. We now have three hookers as John Smit will not be up to the challenge as prop. I hope this works as the best team may be selected but injuries may bare a few weaknesses in off-the-bench players.

  • eina - 2009-06-01 19:15

and NR 15 is... mmmm not so sure this was a good play. Rest ok i think

  • Jakes - 2009-06-01 19:16

    1. They got the twins mixed up. Aikona better this time 2. Brussow should have been there 3. Kirchner much better investment than ROSE

  • dieAnderOu - 2009-06-01 19:16

Earl you Legend!!! Cannot wait for the Legend to turn up the heat! Rest of the team looks fine although I believe that Zane could be a bit disappointed.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:19

and is ricky january picked on form? what about the form of jano vermaak? he will surely feel unlucky... jean deysel could have been the wild card against the lions who would know very little about him.... back to form,, how come akona ndgunane is picked over his brother from the bulls who had a better season on from and who doesnt make either aquad? wouldnt it be funny if the brothers took turns turning up for games and practice! do you think the coaches would notice?

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:20

PIETER DIRK YS DE VILLIERS. Ek haal my hoed af vir jou, sodat ek al my skilfers op jou kan af krap. Daar kies jy toe wragtig Earl Rose. Jys rerig n patetiese Afrigter. Jy se jy wil he die spelers moet die besluite op die veld neem wanneer hulle speel? so wat de %%% doen jy? is jy die span sielkundige of wat. Luister hier, jys n rasis boet.

  • Charles - 2009-06-01 19:23

Great Team, except for sissy Rose. She must be replaced with Zane Kirchner. We can not afford to have woosies in the team.... and yes, I am a Bulls supporter.

  • Boeta - 2009-06-01 19:24

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:25

I agree! Earl Rose????? Stupid transformation system, give me a break.

  • Sean - 2009-06-01 19:26

Please can someone tell me wtf does EARL ROSE do in the team ??? Seariously , this is a joke ;( No disrespect to Earl , but he is just not ``bok material`` ! Hopefully I am wrong , but I doubt it .

  • jono - 2009-06-01 19:26

So we have 3 loose head props, 3 hookers and no tight head (the most important player) and no (quality) full back.

  • Denver - 2009-06-01 19:27

Earl Rose is completely over rated. I agree that Zane Kirchner would be a much better investment. As a person of colour myself, I cannot wait for the day that players are picked on merit and not to satisfy quota requirements.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:28

Earl Rose is not even close to having the form to play for the Bokke, this Quota system is messing up our rugby :S

  • Cobus - 2009-06-01 19:28

PDV must be smoking something. Still keeping Blaps Rose in the sqaud in place of Zane Kirchner? It has nothing to do with colour. What has to do with Colour is that the 2nd and 3rd choice hookers for the Bulls were chosesen for the Boks and emerging boks and the first choice hooker is nowhere? Come on PDV. Be a coach that selects players on Merit and P.S Cut off the SNOR. We have moved on since the 1980's!!!

  • paul - 2009-06-01 19:28

  • Bluetiful Blue Bulls - 2009-06-01 19:29

The Bok coach still has to pick the right team from this lineup. Let's hope he doesn't choke. The last time SA beat the British and Irish Lions was in 1980 (Bill Beaumont's side - nearly 30 years ago) and in 1968 (41 years ago). So, if history is anything to go by, the Lions are hard to beat. This is an important series. Now is not the time to "build" for the next world cup or whatever. The scoreboard does not have a "remarks" column. I can't say that De Villiers's comments (the coach, not the player) at Boktown inspired me with confidence, but, then again, actions speak louder than words.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:30

We will lose the games without Brussouw. At least Luke Watson is not in the picture...Dankie tog!!!

  • Megan - 2009-06-01 19:31

Chiliboy deserves to be picked he's worked hard . Chili is a solid hooker, derick is kuk in the lineouts all he wants to do is be a superstar and try and intercept. All you Chiliboy haters will see. He's gonna make it to the top and all u can do is watch and moan like b*&ches! ha ha

  • RobK - 2009-06-01 19:31

The Boks can't afford to have a passenger like Earl Rose in the team - the Lions will exploit that!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:36

Oh come on Earl Rose but not Jano???

  • andre - 2009-06-01 19:36

they got a couple of player of the year guys in the side so it's just fair that they picked "ROSE the "worst rugby player of the century" booyah

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:36

Earl Rose???

  • IRASTORMER - 2009-06-01 19:38

Come on guys - pleeze tel me - why is the best loose forward in South Africa left out of the squad? Sad that Luke will probably have to be the victim of politics

  • Albert - 2009-06-01 19:40

Januarie kan ek nog verstaan. Maar WAT DE V*K soek Rose in die span? En dit bo Zane? Asseblief PDV. Rose is USELESS.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:41

So to play the lions we have no fetcher and no fullback

  • Uncle Ben - 2009-06-01 19:43

Good overall tons of experience. Watch out lions!!! However there is NO specialist FULL BACK in the team. So why leave out ZANE and put EARL in? Makes NO SENSE. Also Ricky J has passed his sell by date, time for a new scrum half. He is reliable and experienced, I guess he is a safe pick. Morne Steyn well done.

  • Jean - 2009-06-01 19:43

So the Springbok squad has the fourth best fullback in the super 14 in Earl Rose (after Stefan, Ludik and Kirchner) while the emerging springboks (keep in mind they only have 1 game) have both Ludik, Kirchner PLUS EARL ROSE!! I dont know about you, but to me this is blatant favouritism, and besides the fact that its so laughable (Earl Rose is only on the bench for golden lions against lions!), its very sad as even if Earl Rose is good enough to be a springbok (debatable) he shouldnt be in emerging springboks as well. Thats very unfair to so many other aspiring fullbacks (like joe pietersen) who perhaps deserve it more. VERY untasteful mr Devilliers.

  • Mike Ambassador - 2009-06-01 19:47

Dewald not in the main bok camp is beyond me, that man plays his heart out reminds me of Schalk before he bust his neck. As for Earl Rose well ja wat!!! if u say so Div.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:49

PDV your brains must be getting sqaushed by two cheeks. Why Ricky and Earl? Where they good enough even as bench warmers in the Super 14???DUH. Surely this is the time for the best team to be should know this by now...or clearly do not have the final say. I think you will see the light yet, hopefully not too late, although fairly good with all the others selections.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:50

Good team. Stefan Terblanche and Heinrich Brussow can feel cheated. Earl Rose should start playing so that Div can see he is out of his league before he ends up in the tri-nations squad. January and Burger wil also have something to prove on latest form. Good luck. This team has the goods to thrash the Lions.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:51

Selectors need to identify a new bok captain as John Smit's recent player performance in the super 14 was really weak. If he's needed so badely in the bok camp, surely there's some other function for him to do off the rugby field.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:52

My span is Zane, Habana, "Die ander broer"Nonkwe", Wynand, Frans, Morne, Fourie, Steenkamp, John, Bismark, Bakkies, Victor, Piere, Danie, Jaun.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:54

Can you imagine BoD breaking the line and all we have as the last line of diffence is our elastoplast man Earl Rose!! Maybe he will get injured at practise and put all our worries at rest! Why cant we just pick form players, Earl was going to be on the bench for Goldens Lion match for wednesday game, WTF, now he could be starting fullback???

  • Anonymous User - 2009-06-01 19:54

I think our selectors are missing the point.99.9% of the country won't pick January , Rose purely on bad form.Poor Vermaak , Brussouw ,Potgieter , Kockett ,Terblanche and Kircshner. It is time that you politics out of our sport and start picking the best or piss off and leave it for the people to do.

  • Anybody but Earl - 2009-06-01 19:55

Earl Doze - NNooooooooo please-Zane or Stefan are far superior than this twatt. It's like an accident waiting to happen - just hope I'm not a bystander.

  • scipio - 2009-06-01 20:10

look guys, i seriously think it's time we boiqot these matches to send a strong message to PDV. We are the fans, we pay every single person involved with rugby their monthly salary. What a disgrace ( AND STRONG MESSAGE ) we would send out by not attending the lion tour matches. Or do you people just want to continue being pushed around? this crap has got to stop
