Stephen NellJohannesburg - British and Irish Lions tighthead Phil Vickery, if chosen, will face an enormous psychological challenge on Saturday when he encounters the Springbok scrum in the third Test at Coca-Cola Park.
Vickery was challenged by the Bok loosehead Tendai "Beast" Mtawarira to such an extent in the first Test in Durban, that there were doubts among some that he would continue playing Test rugby.
But unless Lions coach Ian McGeechan is willing to hand over the No 3 jersey to John Hayes, a second meeting with Mtawarira or Gurthrö Steenkamp could possibly await Vickery.
Vickery is battling a throat infection, but should have recovered by Saturday.
"It will be a huge psychological challenge for Phil but he definitely has the ability to pass the test," said Lions scrum coach Graham Rowntree.
"He is one of the strongest characters that I know. I have gotten to know him like that as a fellow player and now also from a coaching perspective."
"It is our job as coaches to help players on a psychological and technical level."
"There is no doubt in my mind that Phil will handle himself well if he is chosen. That first Test was a difficult day for Phil but no-one else has his character."
Meanwhile, chances are also looking good that inside centre Jamie Roberts will be available for the third Test. "Jamie is showing good progress. He trained on Wednesday but didn't take part in contact sessions. I expect him to be ready," said Rowntree.
Flyhalf Ronan O'Gara is fit and the chances are looking good for Tommy Bowe to return to the fold after he hurt an elbow in the second Test.
According to Rowntree, the Lions will not get emotional about last Saturday's disappointments. "We have a professional group of players and it is difficult enough to play against the Boks without bringing along baggage from the second Test," said Rowntree.
"I hear many people saying the second Test was one of the best the Lions have ever played. It doesn't make up for the fact that we lost. We gave everything and were very disappointed."
"We don't deserve to go home with a series failure of 3-0. That is what is motivating us this week."
