Wellington - Former All Blacks forward Sione Lauaki has been charged with assault over a bar room incident in his home town of Hamilton last week.

Lauaki, a backrower who has played 17 Tests for New Zealand, was charged on Wednesday after an investigation by Hamilton police.

He will appear in the District Court at Hamilton on March 23.

The 28-year-old Lauaki was due to return to the Chiefs side for its Super 14 match against the Crusaders on Friday, ending a two-week suspension for a dangerous tackle. But Chiefs coach Ian Foster said Lauaki would now be omitted from the team.

"Sione and I have decided that in light of the week that he has had, that the right thing to do is not play him in this game," Foster said. "We will fully support Sione over the next few weeks."

In 2006 Lauaki avoided conviction after being charged with assaulting a security guard and in 2009 took an anger management course after being charged with damaging an Auckland motel.

Scottie you have hit the nial on the head. My brother in law is a Kiwi and i've therefore met loads of them. They generally a very backward bunch. Watch how the No 8 from the Hurricanes play to get an idea of the scum and then we told that we play dirty rugby... Look at the spear tackle on Juan Smit... The maoris are rubbish and have no real skills just aggression thats the reason we keep beating the Kiwis.

He has huge guns - he should know that and keep them holstered. Not many poeple would walk up to him and say...wanna go a few rounds? - so it begs the question... who really started it? Methinks Lauaki. But this is all blind speculation...time to get back to my day job as a defense lawyer.

It's a shame people throw it away so carelessly. And always sobering to read something like this, that is off the field outside the space we know players. I'm glad that Quade Cooper made it out of that car accident, while I'm on about of the field stuff. @ sexbomb - Agreed, Lauaki is a thug

He is just a rugby player. They all blow off some steam in bars and with their size and strength this is bound to happen. the best thing to do would be to have "rugby bars" where they can all just fight each other. haha

He's a thug, should be banned from all rugby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
