Cape Town - The first-ever Cape Town Tens tournament was handed yet another boost in the build-up to the event, with global sports brand, adidas, getting on board as official equipment suppliers.
Adidas will supply the referees' kit and they will also sponsor the Sports Illustrated Legends team (which will be managed by former All Black prop Kees Meeuws), but the most exciting news will see them launch their new adidas rugby ball, the Torpedo X-treme, on the weekend of February 6-8.
Plenty of behind-the-scenes work has gone into developing the ultimate rugby ball and the adidas team are using the Cape Town Tens as the 'soft launch' for the highly-rated Torpedo X-treme ball.
The ball, which has been tested by Dan Carter and All Black kicking coach Mick Byrne, will continue to be used by the All Blacks in all their home Tests in 2009. It will also be seen in other international rugby tournaments in the not-too-distant future.
James Sikora, Global Athlete Care Manager: adidas rugby, said: "We see Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck as part of the adidas rugby family - they've been part of the team for some time now, since their WP and Stormers days - and we're delighted to be involved in this exciting project of theirs.
"The Cape Town Tens has the potential to become a world-class event and we're also very excited about launching the new Torpedo X-treme in Cape Town."
Speaking about the new and improved Torpedo X-treme ball, Sikora added: "Dan Carter's strike rate with our ball is in the high 80s, which is considerably higher than his percentage when kicking with other manufacturers' balls."
Meanwhile, Cape Town City Executive Mayor Helen Zille, who was recently voted the world's best mayor, has expressed her full support for the tournament.
Having also received the backing of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Zille's considerable support for this event is a major boost.
"I would like to express my support for the proposed Tens rugby tournament to be held in the City of Cape Town in February 2009," said Zille in a statement.
"Bobby Skinstad and Robbie Fleck are rugby legends in the Cape and I am confident that their planned tournament will be a valuable addition to Cape Town's sporting and social calendar. It will also be a great boost to tourism to our City.
"I wish them every success and look forward to the event becoming a very popular annual event."
