Kings hunt Bulls' Engelbrecht

2012-10-09 08:06

Cape Town - The Southern Kings are eager to obtain the services of Blue Bulls and Springbok back JJ Engelbrecht.

Die Burger reports that the Kings are currently negotiating with the Bulls to lure the 23-year-old back to his home city.

Engelbrecht, who is highly rated by Bok coach Heyneke Meyer, was schooled at Grey High in Port Elizabeth before joining Western Province after school. He joined the Bulls at the end of last year.

His contract at the Pretoria-based union only expires at the end of 2013 though, so the Kings will have to fight to lure him to the Friendly City.

Engelbrecht, who can play either centre or wing, made his Bok debut against Argentina at Newlands earlier this year.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-09 10:09

He's on about the fact that Cheeky said that he wants to promote transformation, numbnuts.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-09 10:30

Thanks spyker. You get it lablue?

      brandewijn.vancoke - 2012-10-09 11:07

Stop bitchn 'bout transformation! Transformation is a process (I know some of you cringe when you hear this). As the Kings need 2 be competitive next year they need 2 recruit if they wish 2 stay there after 2013. The transformaiton is already happening in the junior ranks - should start to be seen in the senior team in a few years. The Kings High performance academy was 55% other colour in 2011, up to 65% this year and they aim to make it 75% next year and keep it at that percentage the years that follow. That is an active transformation plan that is being implemented. They have also established a few rugby academies in the rural areas in the past year and also gone into partnership with Bath in the UK that have to date donated more than R1mil worth of equipment for the academies in the rural areas and more equipment can be expectd at a later stage. These are all positive steps taken the last year towards transformation and the fruits of these steps will take a few years 2 materialise. The promise of super rugby was not to field a 'black' team but a commitment to developing the 'black' talent (transformation). This has been done and even more will be done as this is still a work in progress,. give it time. So DuToit,. they are keeping their promise by taking active steps towards transformation through their youth structures which in time would infultrate into the senior team.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-09 11:17

brandewijn.vancoke No-one is bitching on transformation and development. We bitch because they destroy another team seeing they cant wait for their transformation to come through and therefore have to buy players to be something. When their players come through they will chase these players away and therefore destroy there playing careers as well. .....but like everything, they want it now!!!! Irrelevant the cost on the long run to other.

      brandewijn.vancoke - 2012-10-09 11:35

DuToit - if that not what you complaining about then why mention it??? I agree with you that another franchise should not have suffered for this - but this was a SARU stuff up and not a Kings one. SARU should not have promises something they could not give... and it would be stupid not to accept it. And all the development in the world will not help if the players leave for greener pastures at other franchises (that why the super status is important) to keep them here. (example is Pottie who left to the Bulls - he left because he wanted the exposure of Super Rugby). So without super rugby all the 'developed' players would leave anyway.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-09 12:11

O come on!!!! We both knoe Cheeky aand friends used influences to make this happen. Not their fault? Ok, fire Cheeky and friends and than EP can maybe wash their hands. Till then they are the reason!!! Why do i mention it? because it is all entwine! It was not offered it was demanded/ordered. Same as a guy with a gun claim my wallet.

  • keithronald.wildschut - 2012-10-09 10:16

Hunt all the homegrown boys that are available to play for us.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-10-09 10:42

1st Cheeky said that it is about transformation. He said that their are so many prev-dis-advance players that they deserve a right. If one follows your way of thinking " homegrown" than FS has a guarantee right as well, but see they have to play good to stay in and do not demand. If FS had such a right you would have seen teams like Sharks to play as Willdebeeste again in the 2nd league as well as a couple of other teams would have lost good players. My point stands. The right was ill become and it was at the cost of other. Your province's players will still be develop to a higher level by other provinces because EP can not do it. At least can you buy the"black homeboys" back to say you have kept your promises. It seams that Kings will just cost the system money.

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-10-09 10:54

I think Cheeky "is so deurmekaar soos kots in n tumble dryer" Hey, kots?? Now that is weird, or not.

      brandewijn.vancoke - 2012-10-09 11:20

Hoor my lied.

  • ReinardtB - 2012-10-09 11:08

Come home JJ, we'll be glad to have you.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-09 11:43

if he goes he can wave his Bok career goodbye...

  • matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-10-09 11:54

Almal wil nou kamstig he die Kings moet oornag net gekleurde spelers in die span he.

  • frigo.donnerweer - 2012-10-09 14:05

If he signs he should just do so for one year, cause they will be relegated in approx 8 months' time.

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-10-09 14:36

Wonder what happened to the rumours about Maku going to the Queens?. He had such a fright after that that he played his worst game of the season for the Lions last week.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-09 16:02

It looks like Cheeky is throwing all the names out there to see who is interested :-). I think Maku will play better this weekend. The weather at least will be cooler, Kimberley looked very hot.
