Kings finalising S15 squad

2012-11-20 07:44

Cape Town - Super Rugby newcomers, the Southern Kings, are busy finalising their squad for next year's tournament.

Despite a number of recent signings made public over the last few weeks, the Kings' elite squad for next year still remains a mystery.

"Today (Monday) we started working with a group of almost 40 and hope to have a better idea with where things stand by Saturday," coach Matt Sexton told Die Burger's website.

"The players are being evaluated. We're looking at their fitness levels and if they have any injury niggles.

"We're also conducting blood tests and other medical evaluations.

"We're looking at their strength and skills - everything that can help is give decent feedback to a player.

"Some of them obviously won't make the elite squad. They will play for the EP Kings in the Vodacom Cup," said Sexton.

Recent signings from other franchises include flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis (WP), hooker Bandise Maku (Lions), lock Steven Sykes (Sharks) and centre Andries Strauss (Cheetahs).

Meanwhile, the Kings are still waiting for an answer to their plea to pick four foreign players in their squad - two more than the allowed number.

Hadleigh Parkes, Nicolas Vergallo, Tomas Leonardi and Eusebio Guinazu could all be included if SARU agrees to the request.

The issue will be further discussed at a SARU Executive Committee meeting on December 4.

Elite squad? Nee hel nou het ek als gehoor.

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-11-20 07:59

We want to see no more than 2 white players in that group and Luke can count for black - otherwise, Cheeky is shown up to not belief the ninth commandment - well mind you the eighth as well.

      thomas.cannon.712 - 2012-11-20 08:21

They may be finalising their squad, but it's not a S15 squad!!!!!!!!!

      she.is.here.777 - 2012-11-20 08:22

Can't be the same or else the "elite" team would be known to clowns like you and Santa.

One thing the cannot buy is the support of the rugby loving public (EP supporters excluded). Looking forward to each game they lose.

  • sharkie.fin - 2012-11-20 08:13

Ag shame. What about their current squad? Obviously they looked forward to Super 15 rugby and earning big bucks, but now its like "Listen boet thanks for the help but we bought players that we feel are better than you. Go play for Border or SWD"

  • gary.desousa.7 - 2012-11-20 08:15

Is Allan Solomons still their coach?

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-11-20 14:06

He never was, they have employed a Kiwi to coach the Super Rugby team ("Super" used in reference to the competition, not the squad)

  • rian.jaarsveld - 2012-11-20 08:19

You have already given them a spot in Super rugby on a silver platter and now they want 4 internationals 2 more than the allowed 2? This is tipical "We Whant what we dont have and then we whant more even if we are not good enough to make it....This is pathetic and spineless. Not like the others that WORK to get there and play in top compitiions. NO RESPECT FOR THEM

      staal.burgher - 2012-11-20 12:28

They should go whine to their ANC bedmates and use some the nation's stolen funds to lure back players from overseas. Then something good might come out of this political debacle.

  • ryan.v.linde.3 - 2012-11-20 08:22

what ever they do, they will still end last. they must enjoy their one and only season in the S15. Lions will be back the following season!!

  • eland.snitbul - 2012-11-20 08:37

Rugby development in the region hey?? Nice lie Cheaty Watson. You fit right in with your politician buddies!!

      Lucky - 2012-11-20 09:07

agree totally. will be interesting to see how many "PD'ed" players make the squad. Big Puke's promises are as empty as bid showerhead's bond!!

  • Dirk.Snyman.001 - 2012-11-20 09:01

I don't get it. The Kings based their entire campaign around being the developing grounds for SA's rugby talent. They played the emotional / political card, saying that they were discovering talented players of colour, only to have them snatched by the "big" unions. Having ridden this wave all the way into an S15 berth, the Kings are now turning the back on the home-grown talent, opting instead to do their own snatching (case in point Catrakilis et al.). And then they still have the audacity to demand two more international players?! "Sorry, local players whom we milked to get in the S15, we just don't think you're good enough". I'm going to be watching the Vodacom Cup - at least that way I'm backing MY boys!

  • phillip.dewaal - 2012-11-20 09:19

  • robert.p.gemmell - 2012-11-20 09:20

No matter who they select asking for an extra 2 foreign players in there team is a joke. You want to play with the big boys you got to play by the rules.

  • gary.doyle.520 - 2012-11-20 09:22

I would like to see a full list of players that the kings approached, not just new and possible signings. Just to put their so called development in the area into perspective.

  • bennie.theunissen.3 - 2012-11-20 10:36

My prediction is that Super Queens will play a "weakened team" in the warm ups in order to have an excuse when they get hammered! Sad state of affairs!!

  • francois.v.eeden.3 - 2012-11-20 10:52

    are they having a laugh????!!!

  • Bazzpete - 2012-11-20 12:52

FOUR overseas players - I thought the King's inclusion was supposed to be in support of developing LOCAL talent. If SARU agree it will prove what a politically motivated bunch of wa....s they are!! The King's are in the Super 15 for better or for worse - use it as a stepping stone for OUR players not overseas players!!!
