Kings boost player ranks

2012-10-03 15:08

Cape Town - The Southern Kings have signed three more prominent players as they aim to bolster their squad ahead of next year's Super Rugby competition.

According to EWN Sport, the Port Elizabeth-based team on Wednesday added Lions hooker Bandise Maku, Argentina scrumhalf Nicolas Vergallo and Blues back Hadleigh Parkes to their ranks.

Kings president Cheeky Watson said the trio will add huge value to the team.

"They bring wonderful experience, Bandise's (Maku) played at the highest level and his coming back home.

"Vergallo, we've seen him play for Argentina so I think he'll add tremendous value to the Kings. Hadleigh Parkes has played for the Blues (in Super Rugby) which will also add much value to the Kings," said Watson.

Other recent signings from the Kings, who will play Super Rugby next year at the expense of the Lions, include WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis, Cheetahs centre Andries Strauss and Sharks lock Steven Sykes.

some real great black talent from the EC that, so out of the six signings 1 black player. where is the so called transformation. SARU, WP and the kings laying in the same bed it seems. WP getting all their lions players, kings getting super rugby exposure and SARU 2 sucks away from a blow job from the ANC

      press.enter.12 - 2012-10-03 15:30

Cheeky Watson to demand a headstart of 50 points for each of the Kings super 15 games ?

      christo.t.ferreira - 2012-10-03 17:08

Looks like the Bulls, Sharks, Cheetah supporters are really getting worried about a potent Kings team ?? Thats why their so many suur gat comments hey ????????

      braam.groenewald.39 - 2012-10-03 17:16

yes christo we are worried about the Kings, cause from next year on Australia wont be regarded as "weakest" conference RSA will.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-04 04:42

Braam, not really, I think there will be good spread of SA teams throughout the Super rugby log. The Stormers and Sharks on top along with the New Zealand teams, the Cheetahs in the middle dividing the good teams from the bad teams, followed by the Australian teams leaving the Bulls and Kings to fight for the wooden spoon. Of course there will be one Australian team undeservingly in the play-offs as well due to the conference system.

      luke.sportify - 2012-10-04 11:58

they will be developing black talent not buying to many bring them home keep the home

  • nico.pretorius.946 - 2012-10-03 15:16

Pity about Maku, going to miss him at the LIONS, but I'm sure he's got an escape clause in his contract for 2014 when the queens are out of super rugby. Or maybe like so many other players he is going there to retire, less stress in the lower leagues.

  • damienbradshawphotography - 2012-10-03 15:17

    Welcome Home !

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-03 17:00

He left the Eastern Cape in 2004. Since then he has learnt most of his rugby at the Bulls, and Lions! He returns with far more than he left with...

  • taetjo.mathabatha - 2012-10-03 15:18

Maku shouldn't have done that. Maybe that's because that is his home province.

  • jacques.hollands - 2012-10-03 15:22

So much for the so-called "un-mined depth of talent" in the Eastern Cape! Should be called the Southern Barbarians if they are going to import all their players...

      odupreez - 2012-10-03 15:41

That was just a BS story the puke watsons spread around, they have NO un-mined talent in the treasure chest at all, except the ones that were previously identified and developed by other provinces. If he stays true what he was advocating, he should be fielding 21 local players and puke as captain, without any purchases from other unions. He is just in it for the money like all the gravy train pasengers.

      Southern Cringe

      bootman.bokke - 2012-10-03 17:19

Odupreez you seem sad that the gravy train no longer allows white passengers.

      luke.sportify - 2012-10-04 12:05

Do you expect the Kings to develop top players between now and Feb? The other franchises have had years to buy players now the Kings must use homegrown u/19/21 to make up their squad......... Please think before commenting

  • erik.prinsloo.1 - 2012-10-03 15:37

At this rate: Kings run on 15: 5 local players (maybe 2 of color) and 10 imports!

      George - 2012-10-03 16:35

Not to worry --They get 10 BEE points start in every game ! Boycott their games --Simple.

  • Warren Mudge - 2012-10-03 15:56

This Cheeky Watson always gets what he wants, just because he is a cANCer lackey with his head so far up their collective where the sun don't shines. It makes me sick, what about all the promises he made to the so called un-mined EC talent. He belongs in the cANCer, he lies and connives like the rest of them the bloody git.

  • christovdyk - 2012-10-03 15:58

After all the crap justifying their place in Super rugby, the only one good reason Cheeky gave was for the development of Eastern cape rugby. Even that reason was not really good enough but that said, why the hell are they now building a team with players from all over BUT Eastern cape??? So in the end Cheeky is only looking after his own pocket and not the development of EC players... SAD but TRUE

  • jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-03 16:11

What happend to 'local talent only' Watson you @hole!!!

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-04 00:05

Die dowwe nurse is suurgat want twee Bulls spelers het tussen al hierdie gekopery deur besluit om Lions toe te gaan. Jislaaik dit moet sleg gaan met 'n rugbyspan as sy spelers Lions to gaan.

  • leeOnearth - 2012-10-03 16:26

I am a sharks and South African rugby supporter, I have witnessed a huge surge in kids of all colour playing rugby in the Eastern Cape, this is their incentive...from a geographical reason, the Lions and Blue Bulls are almost neighbours. The Lions have not got the talent or the will to pull themselves out of their dip. Spread the game of Rugby in SA, grow the game of Rugby in SA, stop bitching as always...So what if Watkins influences rugby, the afrikaners have influenced rugby through the bulls for a long time and now and not always for a better game, its time to spread the beautiful game to all in SA. VIVA RUGBY.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-03 17:04

When they allow you to travel visit the school festivals in Johannesburg and count the number of players of colour. I'm surprised about your comment of the Lions having no talent, considering that Cheeky was whining because the Lions wouldn't release any players to the Kings? In your opinion these players requested are obviously all "useless" - why would Cheeky want them?

  • steven.berry.319 - 2012-10-03 16:29

Bunch of Lions cry babies? Maybe if they won some games with there bought players like Butch James or Maku...they would still be in the super15??? Give the Kings a chance... Grey PE, Selborne, Dale, Queens all produced Springboks - that went to the northern unions to play pro rugby... Grey Bloem breeds boks for fun and they end up at the Sharks.... The EC and Free State have had there players stolen year after year by Sharks, Lions, Bulls... Grow up, and support all the SA teams who will be playing in 2013

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-03 17:07

Players stolen? Did the Unions arrive in the middle of the night and just take them? Grow up, rugby is a professional sport and players move provinces. Until Cheeky's political mates ban the movement of players from their home towns this is a fact of life. Monument, KES, Jeppe and other Jo'burg schools also create Springboks. In fact a certain KES boy who was "stolen" by province won Man of the Match last Saturday!!!

      wanderering.wanderer - 2012-10-04 04:53

Ok Steven, Lets take you up on your argument, when did the EC try and improve beyond the first division in the Currie Cup they made the final and lost. They sold their Super rights to the Sharks many years ago and now demanded it back, they were cash strapped because all the funds were stolen. The EP Elepphants has never in the 120 years of CC won the trophy. Why do you demand higher respect for your schools as in Johannesburg we have excellent Rugby schools as well. Maybe you should actually travel beyond the borders of the EC and visit some of our areas before mouthing off (I promise you dont need a passport). Remember no amount of Super rugby is going to guarantee that a young talented player will stay in his home town. No one said the Kings must excist, its the way it was done that we are upset about. How are you really going to feel if you do not even play in the Premier division cc again next year and get hammered every game.

  • quartus.vanzyl - 2012-10-03 17:03

Cheeky Watson are supposed to ONLY have BLACK players in this new franchise (mighty elephant kings spear throwers or whatever they are called). He used the old argument of blacks not getting a fair deal in SA. And so many blacks in the eastern cape are not exposed to rugby at this level, and all that bull s...t. And now Mr Watson? Little Pucky is even the captain of this outfit!

Wonder how many of these perpetually boring anti-Kings so-called rugby supporters even know the difference between The EP Kings and The Southern Kings. You know, like The Blue Bulls and The Bulls, or Western Province and The Stormers. Which do you disapprove of? The EP Kings or The Southern Kings? Or Both. Now, I ask with tears in my nipple-pink eyes ... wtf has The EP Kings got ANYTHING to do with anything, besides getting possible promotion into top tier Currie Cup next season? Huh? Huh? OK, now STFU you bunch of morons. Proud EP Kings and future Southern Kings Supporter.

Jeeez can't you people see that the \what happened to developing local talent\ comment has been said probably 20 times on this article alone. Why do 20 people have to do the same comment? Talk about going in circles. I support any SA rugby player and team. Its just the jersey that changes. Move on people. Nothing you do or say is going to change it.

      andrebotes1982 - 2012-10-03 19:35

As julle dit oornag wil he, stuur daai ouens terug. Andersins: WAG!!

Ek hoor jou bootman. Moenie Johan Goosen en die Potgieters vergeet nie. Wou nou nie die hele lys opnoem nie, wou net n paar van die swart en bruin spelers van Kings area uitwys was elders speel. En daar is nog ander. Veral by Sharks.

  • glen.clark.37669 - 2012-10-04 08:36

I agree with Nico, only one year of embarrassment and then, hopefully, we can put this fiasco behind us!! The other S15 teams must be delighted though, it will give them a chance to rest their A teams and play the "Kings" with their second stringers. It will almost be like a Bye to play this team that is not representing anything really!

  • spartikus2805 - 2012-10-04 09:32

You guys think that your beloved bulls, sharks etc are so entitled to play super rugga. you were given it on a silver platter. why is the eastern cape the only region that 'doesnt'deserve' it. what makes your province more entitled?

  • luke.sportify - 2012-10-04 11:12

I cant believe how clueless most of you are... Sport24 really needs to let readers take a IQ tests before they are allowed to make comments. How do you expect the Southern Kings to be competitive in year 1 without buying players to strengthen the squad. Do you really expect the team to be made up of u/19/21 black players in year 1 You need to be strong in key positions to be able to play inexperienced players and develop them The SK's were told in August that they were playing in 2013, with all overseas and local super rugby already contracted what are they meant to do? I look forward to your wise educated comments.... Stupid does not describe some of you.

  • carljdavis - 2012-10-04 11:16

It is no wonder that we South Africans are the laughing stock in the Super Rugby world. Why not give the Kings a chance, why not understand that they have six months to accomplish what the rest of the franchises built up in years? (One does not develop local talent in six months to compete in such a competion) Why not put South Africa first? Why don't we just support the Kings against the other conference teams? Why should provincialism take preference?

  • david.vanas.3 - 2012-10-04 13:32

@bootman.bokke - it's got nothing to do with racism you idiot, it has all to do with the way puke watson and his "cheeky" father somehow used political goodwill to secure a position which should have been given to another team in the "Premier" division of the Top competition in the game, and not to some 2nd division side in the lower echelons. Don't always revert to the race card when you fail to motivate your arguments using logic.

      bootman.bokke - 2012-10-04 17:19

David you morons are not interested in logic. All those that support the Kings have motivated there arguments with nothing but logic and you refuse to accept it. Ask anyone against the Kings why they are and you get the same idiotic answers 1. Luke wanted to puke on the Bok jersey 2. His father played for black teams during apartheid 3. Cheeky is money hungry 4. Cheeky has political connections and supports the ANC 5. They cant even win the first division 6. They're buying foreign players What kind of logic is that? Where is your compelling argument? Tell me that rugby is not big in the EC. Tell me that they wont get sponsorship. Tell me that games in PE wont be supported by the locals. Tell me they dont have the facilities for a Super Rugby match. Cheeky Watson used whatever means at his disposal to achieve his goals............and achieved them he has. For that I applaud him. Yes, he will benefit from it financially. He has worked hard for it and he deserves it but the biggest benefactor will be EC rugby. LONG LIVE THE KINGS.

      bootman.bokke - 2012-10-04 17:47

..........oh, and what team in the premier division should have gotten a SR franchise? Lets look at that compelling argument you make Western Province..............no, they're already in Sharks..............no, they're in too Cheatahs..................in Bulls...............in, in, in Then you must be talking about Griquas right? They, along with the Griffons are affiliated with the Cheatahs, so technically they're in too. Wait, maybe you're suggesting Griquas get a franchise on there own. Where would they get the players? Maybe they could buy some. Have you seen the stadium in Kimberley? Now compare that s...hole to the stadium in PE. Nee wat.
