Juan could play in S15 warm-up

2012-01-11 10:20

Cape Town - Injured Springbok flank Juan Smith should be ready for the start of the Cheetahs' Super Rugby campaign and could also feature in a warm-up match.

The Volksblad newspaper reports that Smith started on-field training this week for the first time since his Achilles injury.

Even though he's still doing rehabilitation and not training with his team-mates, he started running on grass for the first time again on Monday.

And the Cheetahs are hoping the 30-year old could start training with the team later this month and maybe even play in a warm-up game before their first Super Rugby match against the Lions on February 25.

Smith is optimistic and hopeful for an injury-free 2012 season. "Monday was the first time that I've done some running again. I'm really impressed. Ten months on the sidelines are long and after the first session I'm feeling good and I'm very positive.

"My hunger to play is back and bigger than ever before.

"I hope and pray that I can play all the games I should," said Smith.

If Smith plays in their Super Rugby season-opener on February 25 it will be exactly a year since he sustained the injury against the Bulls.

"We're aiming to have him ready for the warm-up matches," Ian Morris, the Cheetahs' team doctor said.

If Smith plays in a warm-up match it will probably be their final one on February 11 against the Bulls in Polokwane.

    juan 4 bok skipper?

      Taetjo - 2012-01-11 12:40

You must be crazy in your head. He is 30 years old for God's sake. Select a young captain that will be part of the team build-up for 2015RWC. Surely you don't want to put a 29 or a 30 year old as captain. You want someone that will be still energetic enoug in 4 years time. And I can guarantee you that Juan and Schalck Burger will not be the best players in their positions in 2015. Don't do the same mistakes as in 2011 and pray to the feet of players that "were". Yes, Juan Smith is an incredible player, but is is certainly not going to be any better in years to come. Pick a 24 or a 25 year old captain to lead the Boks. Even a 20 year old if he is experienced enough or has the right qualities. Certainly not anyone older than 26. You'd be doing a grave mistake.

would be a good choice, but maybe too injury prone

Name one that will consistently make the team Taetjo!

      Taetjo - 2012-01-12 01:14

Francois Hougaard? Surely that will be our No. 1 Scrumhalf for a very long time. I might not be able to name one right now but Juan Smith will certainly not make the side in the next 3 -4 years.
