Cape Town – Francois Louw’s dream season took another fairytale turn on Saturday when he scored a try for the Springboks in front of the pavilion named after his grandfather.
Louw, who is the grandson of the late Jan Pickard, scored the Boks’ last try with five minutes left after a lineout drive to make it a record South African victory over France on home soil.
South Africa won 42-17.
It is the biggest margin by which the Boks have beaten France in South Africa.
Their biggest win over the French remains the one of 52-10 in Paris in 1997.
Louw’s try was his first in Test rugby, but not his most telling contribution against the French.
He made more than a dozen tackles and turned over French possession on a number of occasions.
“It’s always good to see new blood coming through. Everybody was worried when Schalk Burger was injured last year, but then Heinrich Brüssow appeared on the scene. Now Heinrich is injured and Francois is here. It must be a tough job for the coach and selectors with all the depth we have,” said Springbok captain John Smit.
