Jacobs snubs Stormers

2011-12-09 07:31

Cape Town - Springbok centre Adrian Jacobs looks unlikely to play for the Stormers in next year's Super Rugby tournament.

Jacobs earlier expressed an interest to join the Cape side after his contract at the Sharks was not renewed. The Stormers coach then invited Jacobs to train with the Cape franchise to try and convince them to give him a contract.

The Stormers on Thursday named a 53-man pre-season training squad for the Super Rugby season and it came as a bit of a surprise that Jacobs's name was not on that list, especially after they controversially dispensed with the services of Jaque Fourie, Johann Sadie and Tim Whitehead. Jean de Villiers and Juan de Jongh remain the only big name centres in the squad and Jacobs could be a worthy replacement if either of them get injured.

However, Coetzee told Die Burger newspaper that Jacobs did not react to his invitation to train with them, which is the reason for his omission.

The squad will be reduced by between 10 and 15 players in January before they embark on a training camp to Hermanus.

      adrian.bean - 2011-12-09 07:57

No he won't be able to handle the rejection for not making the team!!!!!!

      CapeChappy - 2011-12-09 09:39

Possible evidence that WP are the front-runners to land Frans Steyn? Just a thought...

  • Lionel - 2011-12-09 07:38

    Thank Goodness!!!!!

      gregmcdavid - 2011-12-09 08:36

      Bullet dodged!

      Ray - 2011-12-09 10:04

      Agree-Jacobs is overrated.

      Chumscrubber1 - 2011-12-09 10:16

A wasted underestimated talent Jacobs. The only Sharks centre to make things happen - now they have nobody. I'll never understand why he was so underused - must have been some issues we are unaware of.

  • B - 2011-12-09 07:45

Province does not need backline players, they are in desperate need of quality prop forwards

      Lionel - 2011-12-09 07:47

      Agreed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nico - 2011-12-09 07:55

Probably still want to play rugby somewhere before taking the province retirement package :)

  • Lionel - 2011-12-09 07:57

Just heard that Jacobs is busy negotiating with a French club!!!

      roberta.keeling - 2011-12-09 13:25

      Bon Voyage, Jacobs.

  • Bryan - 2011-12-09 08:30

    Jacobs is a complete has-been

      Wilbur - 2011-12-09 13:02

Actually, he's a never-should-have-been. Clear cut quota pick of the early 2000's. He did improve, and was one of best gap-spotters, but too slow to make it stick at times. Way past his prime, glad he's not coming to Stormers/WP.

  • willie.uys - 2011-12-09 08:31

Just as well. Invest in the young players that came up through the system and don't loose people like Sadie.

  • Andre - 2011-12-09 08:35

Jacobs realised he won't see any silverware thats why

  • Kevin - 2011-12-09 08:40

Yorr... weak players are acting hot

  • Peter - 2011-12-09 08:56

ive missed something ,Where is Jacques Fourie going?

      eric.viljoen - 2011-12-09 09:00

He's in Japan... has been for a while. I'd like to see some of JP Du Plessis on outside center though.

      Warrick - 2011-12-09 10:35

      and he's not coming back

  • Koos - 2011-12-09 09:08

ag shame.... is alistor nou seer gemaak.... shame!

      adrian.bean - 2011-12-09 09:30

      Nico - 2011-12-09 12:26

  • syd.rose - 2011-12-09 09:09

Ah well he can always paly for the EP Kings. They already have De Wet Barry.

      Foc - 2011-12-09 09:30

It must be quite a sight seeing De Wet Barry getting round the field in a wheel chair ... he must be ANCIENT??

  • John - 2011-12-09 09:18

I love to read the crap that gets written here. The Stormers have two of the imcumbent bok centres and until recently 3 so why all the noise from the boneheads from up North??? Worry about your own teams oh and remember who was top of the SA conference last year.

      Gerry - 2011-12-09 10:05

Who won the Currie Cup last season?? When did WP win ANYTHING - it was ages ago!??

      Steenbra - 2011-12-09 10:32

John.. these boneheads always accuse the billy goats of winning the CC, S15 before it has been played. yet they guilty of the same. Look at the bulls supporters using the same old line '' cupboards bare for 10 yrs''. Yet the champions did not make the playoffs for both competitions. Stormers may not have won the competitions but made the semi's and finals for two years running. It will be interesting to see how 2012 competition pans out..

      Andre - 2011-12-09 11:25

John it does not not matter if you guys were top you still choked, Win a Super rugby title then you can talk about Super rugby until then I were you i would not talk about super rugby. Wp / Stormers are the chokers of SA rugby hahahahahaha

      Gungets - 2011-12-09 18:09

Show me the silverware. Check under the dust in your trophy cabinet, perhaps find an old Runners-Up medal down there somewhere.

      Alan - 2011-12-09 18:13

      Nitronic, at least we're consistent.

  • Roy - 2011-12-09 10:29

GOOD! Said from the beginning that WP should NOT consider taking on Jacobs. Why should we always look at has-beens who are not good enough for their provinces. We have more than enough talent here and we should give our own youngsters a chance.

  • calliedj - 2011-12-09 10:45

The Sharks made a mistake here. Serious problems in the midfield, and Adi was just about the only one who still looked like he knew what he was doing.

  • eric.vanvuuren - 2011-12-09 12:01

Province die currie cup com weer!!! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha !!!Go Bulls!!!

  • Etienne - 2011-12-09 12:14

Jacobs is crap. Frans Steyn would be a far better option and maybe he can just get enough game time for the next world cup if he starts playing in SA now. Where is Pieter Louw?

  • Andre - 2011-12-09 12:27

who wants him in anyway?he must retire.

  • Sharkshoot - 2011-12-09 16:06

Geez...gone are the days when players would do anything to play for Province.

      Pieter - 2011-12-09 16:54

@Sharkshoot VERY VERY long gone. Will you join a province that can't win a single cup in more than a decade?

      Alan - 2011-12-10 15:57

Quite personally I would consider the highest offer.
