Injury blow for Baby Boks

Cape Town - South Africa's under-20 rugby coach Dawie Theron on Tuesday called up Patrick Howard to the national training group currently in camp in Stellenbosch after two players withdrew because of injury.

Western Province centre Kobus van Wyk (back) and Golden Lions scrumhalf Vian van der Walt (ankle) were medically assessed and it was decided to withdraw them from the camp.

Howard was part of the trials squad that assembled in Kimberley in November last year.

"We still have three more scrumhalves in our training squad and have decided not to replace Vian for now, but we're a bit thin in the midfield and that is why Patrick has been pulled in. He has been with us before and knows the plans and structures," said Theron.

"I'm impressed with the enthusiasm showed at the camp so far. We've progressed well with our planning towards the Junior World Championships, compared to the same time last year."

The SA U20s play friendly matches against Ikeys in Cape Town on Saturday and Maties in Stellenbosch next Friday.
