Huge demand for RWC tickets

Wellington - Fans have applied for more than 600 000 tickets for next year's Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, organisers said on Thursday.

"This is a great start and is clear evidence that both New Zealand and overseas fans will strongly support this tournament," said Martin Snedden, chief executive of tournament organisers Rugby New Zealand 2011.

"Fans are realising how special this tournament will be in New Zealand and this bodes well for future ticketing phases and for the event itself."

The applications were for the first phase of ticket sales, which comprise packages of tickets for all the pool matches at a single venue or all the pool matches played by a single team.

There were 125 000 applications for pool packs, along with 40 000 applications for quarter-final packages and the play-off for third place, the organisers said.

Snedden said pool packs for the New Zealand team and for Auckland's Eden Park Stadium had been oversubscribed.

Overseas demand had been strong with the most popular team pool packs, apart from the All Blacks, being for England, Ireland, France, South Africa and Australia.

Individual tickets for the World Cup are expected to go on sale in September and a ballot for tickets to the semi-finals and finals will take place early next year, RNZ 2011 said.

A total of 20 teams will take part in 48 matches at 13 venues around New Zealand when the World Cup kicks off in September next year.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
