Habana on fire for Barbarians

2009-12-05 18:43

London - A brilliant Bryan Habana hat-trick fired the Barbarians to just their second ever win over New Zealand in a non-cap international at Twickenham here on Saturday.

The South African flyer scored two breakaway tries in the first half and finished a close-range effort in the second for the invitational side masterfully led by Australian playmaker Matt Giteau.

Giteau hit two conversions and a penalty, with Morne Steyn kicking a penalty two minutes from time to seal the Baa-Baas' first win over the All Blacks since the 1973 victory that featured Gareth Edwards' famous try.

A second-string New Zealand, lacking the leadership of Dan Carter, scored tries through Ben Smith and Anthony Boric, with Stephen Donald successful with a penalty and conversion and Mike Delaney hitting a late penalty.

It was a poor end to the All Blacks' European tour, which saw them notch up wins over Wales, England, Italy and France without conceding a try.

Donald opened the scoring with a fifth-minute penalty as the two sides felt each other out.

Habana dived in for the Baa-Baas' first try five minutes later after an offload from full-back Drew Mitchell, who had gathered a loose ball when All Black hooker Corey Flynn was isolated just metres from the hosts' line.

Smith hit back for the All Blacks after the Barbarians had been spread too thinly when Giteau was drawn in, the winger finishing off a move set up by a scintillating midfield break from Luke McAlister.

Brendan Leonard produced an outstanding try-saving tackle on Jacque Fourie after the centre had been played through by midfield partner Jamie Roberts, the sole player from the four 'home unions' to start for the Baa-Baas.

But the wind was with the Baa-Baas, and Habana scored his second after intercepting a Donald pass in midfield, juggling the ball before sprinting away, with a brief look around in glee at the chasing All Black skipper Richie McCaw.

McAlister punched well above his weight early in the second-half, knocking Rocky Elsom into touch after the Australian No 8 had gathered a Giteau cross-kick and seemed bound for the tryline.

Crucially, the All Blacks failed to make a 15-minute period of pressure tell, scrum-half Leonard in particular guilty of hogging the ball with the line at his team's mercy.

Giteau stretched the Barbarians' lead to seven with a well-struck long penalty in the 57th minute.

But just minutes later, Boric burrowed his way over after another break from the on-form McAlister set up quick ruck ball down the right wing.

Replacement outside-half Mike Delany missed the conversion.

With 12 minutes to play, Habana bagged his hat-trick, crossing in the corner after Giteau drew two defenders with Steyn providing the definitive pass.

New Zealand opted for a penalty kick to bring the score back to 22-18, but Steyn had the final say, kicking three points after the All Black scrum folded to seal a memorable win.

Final score: Barbarians 25 - New Zealand 18

  • warren - 2009-12-05 18:59

So glad I was able to watch it on Stupid Sport!

  • Rey - 2009-12-05 19:06

    Yes...wtf supersport???

  • spectre - 2009-12-05 19:06

Its thanks to Spoil Sport and the channel of chimps we all got to read about the game and not actually see it...What a way to end "the year of the fan"!

  • Milder - 2009-12-05 19:12

I cant beliefe SuperSport did show what sounds to be the best game of the year! Meanwhile there are dumb replays or rubbish! Has the SABC taken over SuperSport? This is bad judgement from a country where Rugby is HUGE for the local sports channel not to buy rights and show this game, just plain dumb to be honest!

  • Bok1906 - 2009-12-05 19:14

Why this game wasnt televised is beyond me - had the braai all fired up for nothing!!

  • jon black - 2009-12-05 19:22

Was cool watching the game on the net - guess you can thank SA's pathetic infrastructure for disallowing you that...

  • mike - 2009-12-05 19:23

It was a great game !! I saw it on the internet thanks Supersport :-( Anyway .. the Barbarians played SA rugby and you could see it. As long as we use the same tactics SA will will the tri nations and world cup again... Go Bokke !!!

  • Ticked off - 2009-12-05 19:31

I think it is disgraceful that the match was not shown. Who ever made that decision needs to be REPLACED and ALL subscribers given a refund. What a bunch of wallies!

  • sbo - 2009-12-05 19:34

SUPERDUHSport, the company that publishes start times for events up to an hour BEFORE THE EVENT???? The same people that employed Skinstad and his SuperNoncomittal commentary, even when the refs are screwing us to death!!!

  • phil - 2009-12-05 19:40

Very good game! Nick Mallet is a great coach, but the world-class players made it even easier for him. I think he showed a few things: 1) Habana should be used for things other than kick-and-chase, 2) WP Nel is an excellent player and does not look out of place against the best in the world, even on debut, (Put JS back at hooker and bring in a proper TH prop or see point 3), 3) Matfield is a good captain, 4) Morne Steyn is better at full-back than fly-half (but who will replace him?) and 5) Schalk Burger is still a class player. I'm no expert in rugby, but the above things stood out for me. Things we already knew: Jaque Fourie, Jamie Roberts and Matt Giteau are special players. South Africa produces talented players. And lastly, but my favourite: running rugby is beautiful and exciting to watch!!!

  • Bart - 2009-12-05 19:52

We had to watch 7's while we could have seen 9 real boks WIN againts no easy side on any given day. Slow Sport can at least show a reply , butt they still prefer to not comment.

  • Dave - 2009-12-05 19:54

Habana has lifted his game since he signed for WP/Stormers

  • Impi - 2009-12-05 19:54

Great game ! Even better than the 2007 game when the BaaBaas drilled SA, showing that they only won the RWC because they played walk-over teams.

  • Steve - 2009-12-05 20:00

NOT Televised: Go talk to SASOL and SUPERSPORT who are not prepared to reward SA rugby supporters subscribers and pump clients, because they are not prepared to sponsor a NON Springbok event notwithstanding the fact that it was largely a Bok effort.......SOLUTION: Boycott SASOL pumps for the next 3 months, RESULT: they will never do this again!!! VIVA ! up the cyber for these corporate a##h###

  • Herb - 2009-12-05 20:09

so angry at Supersport for failing to show us the one game where SA players do well. greedy tv fatcats fleecing us out of a fortune every month in exchange for thousands of repeats. bring on some competition I'm first in the queue.

  • Gary - 2009-12-05 20:09

Why was this game not broadcasted, what do I pay for??

  • GlobetrotterSA - 2009-12-05 20:25

You can watch the highlights of the match on Youtube. A few vids have been uploaded.

  • Paul C - 2009-12-05 20:28

Was also waiting eagerly for SUPERSPORT to show the game ... but alas! These NEVER ENDING 7's candy floss rugby driving me insane ... not interested at all ... thank you SUPERSPORT!

  • Nicky - 2009-12-05 20:29

I agree. Boycott SASOL pumps for the next 3 months. They treat their fans like sh!t.

  • GeePMB - 2009-12-05 20:34

Supersport claim their bid wasn't accepted to broadcast the match. Bollocks, the last time the Baa Baa's played we were able to watch. Load of crap Supersport - You FAIL!!!!

  • saintnowhere - 2009-12-05 20:39

Impi seriously... grow some b@lls, don't be so bitter and back your nation man.

  • Bronwyn - 2009-12-05 20:39

Sounds like it was a brilliant game. Second time this year that Supersport has forfeited showing All Black games (there are a number of AB supporters in this country, Supersport, and an even bigger number of guys who enjoy a good game of rugby). I accept that the AB's playing Australia is not a major game for you, but come on, highlights would have been nice. The AB's playing a Baabaa's side which was largely made up of Springboks is a game thousands would have watched. Instead, we got HIGHLIGHTS of an India/Sri Lanka cricket game, which WAS screened on SS. PATHETIC GUYS!!!!

  • renny - 2009-12-05 21:06

I'm a Very dissapointed DstV Subscriber. Shame on You

  • Denése - 2009-12-05 21:08

Boycott Sasol pumps, everybody!!! Can't believe we didn't get to see the game. Had to put up with rubbish - so went out instead. So many South Africans playing. If it was soccer it would have replaced WHATEVER was on SS1.

  • Roy - 2009-12-05 21:22

Utter frustration, especially considering what we pay for the premium boquet. Time to put customers first PoorSport. Don't be surprised when good RSA internet connectivity, when it arrives at it will, sees your subsciptions take a huge knock. Customers go where they're invited but stay only where they are made to feel welcome.

  • Black Adder - 2009-12-05 21:32

As usual these people just don't understand or care a S**t about there customers or clients. What happened to all this crap about player 23. This game should have been transmitted and maybe their viewer ratings would have increased. Who the hell do they think they are, and when will they realise that it's the paying viewers who are actually paying these salaries.

  • Tommygun - 2009-12-05 23:08

It shows that our backs are more than just highball chasers. Where was PDVs brain in the second half of the Ireland game.

  • MARCO BOK SUPPORTER - 2009-12-05 23:29

The 7 Bok players who played today did outstandingly well and more so Mr Bryan Habana.I liked it especially when the Twickenam crowd gave him a rousing ovasion when he left the field.Well done son.Drew Mitchell at fullback though didn't quite do it for me apart from that one moment of cleverness that led to Habana's opening try.Matt Gituea was superb to say the least. The Boks on the other hand looked remarkably fresh, spirited and up for it today than the team that played Ireland and lost last week.I wonder why.Jeremy Guscott was saying in his match analysis afterwards that he thinks Bismarck Du Plessis is a better player/hooker than John Smit based on today's perfomance. He is right though at least twice today Bismarck made direct runs at the opposition and in both cases almost led to tries had it not been for the forward spills by others. And he alway found Matfield in the lineout.Great game for Burger aswell as he did concede any penalties witch is unusal and he made some hard important tackles so too the Beast Matiwari great tackle in the midfield on that allblack flyhalf. The All Black team to me today looked very similar to the Boks side that lost to Saracens at Wembley. This is Graham Henry second string side in waiting he is building towards the 2011 worldcup. So there is stiil hope going forward for the second string Boks if you wanna measured yourselves against this all blacks team. Keep applying yourselves and work at it I reckon its not all doom and gloom for second string new blood Boks.

  • davsie - 2009-12-05 23:31

To : Steve, Nicky and Denese. Just how ignorant are you ? Why involve or blame SASOL ? , they are the sponsors of the Springboks and Springbok 7's. They have nothing to do with the Barbarians. Don't make stupid calls like this one if you are clearly misinformed

  • Great game - 2009-12-05 23:38

MIKE did you smoke something heavy? “Barbarians played BOK Rugby” ACCORDING TO YOU!!!??? You must be joking mate! Great game of entertaining rugby like it should be played. Not the shit rugby that the Boks played this year....kick, charge and pray! Boks will have to change their game plan for next year. If they play the BB game again the AB’s and Aussies will destroy them. Fortunately for the Boks it took a few months to work out the secret of the ugly Bok rugby. The BB will be nowhere in 2010 with the kick and charge game and Steyn @ 10. Habana showed why he should get the ball (hopefully he will @ WP with playmakers around him) Habana, Jaque Fourie, Grant, Pietersen and de Jongh will create havoc in 2010! WP Nel has a great future and Matfield can easily take over from J Smit as captain. Schalk is still the MAN! SA has to find a proper 10 like Giteau. Morne Steyn is k#k and should move to 15 to start with. Jimmy Cowan took over from Gregan is the prime pri#k in World Rugby! Won’t someone PLEASE give him a snotklap!? Boycott SASOL....typical SA supporter comments.Everytime something goes wrong you guys wants to boycott either the sponsors or the games but NEVER even got close to that! Get some tips from Cosatu if you want to organise a boycott. White people have never been able to stand together in SA....just another empty dream!

  • PLEASE HELP! - 2009-12-05 23:45

Great game thanks to the positive attitude and 2 no 10’s that can actually play rugby! Thanks god Habana is going to WP and will play with guys like Grant, de Jongh, Fourie and Pietersen who will give him the ball and create space. Morne Steyn is a useless idiot and he will be exposed in the S14 and if he is selected in the Bok team. SA needs a decent no 10 NOW! Someone like Giteau or Carter will be nice but we will settle for ant no 10 who can play and not only kick. I cannot wait to see Morne in 2010 behind a struggling pack without Du Preez (when he sits out or get injured)

  • andrew - 2009-12-05 23:58

    endless golf on M-Net. BOORRRIIING!!

  • Bart - 2009-12-06 00:07

Why not! Slowsport can replay the game when the opening match takes place with the soccer. Will be fair to all us rugby supporters.

  • Super StupidSport - 2009-12-06 00:08

What are you becoming like the SABC now? What a freakin joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!! # EPIC FAIL

  • jla - 2009-12-06 00:31

sorry to change the subject but does anyone know when the last time an individual scored a hat trick against the ABs was?

  • Martin - 2009-12-06 00:34

In Ireland so managed to watch it. Everybody can be ultra proud of the boys.Bryan got a standing ovation when he came off. Commentators and fans at Twickenham could not praise him enough. Victor led brilliantly. Schalk and Solialo tackled each other like bulldozers all day. Unbelievable tackle at the end by Schalk to save the game. Even WP Nel took out 4 of them on a run. Beast fantastic. Crowd shouting 'Beeeaaaast' every time made me proud. But the best was seeing the unbelievable joy on the players when they won. It meant so much to them. The Twicker crowd were blown away by how much effort the lads put in. Every one of the players were hugging Mallett at the end. They showed brilliant sportmanship and made the northern hemisphere see the Bok players in a brand new light and gave wholehearted support. Absolutely fantastic to watch. I usually rate Supersport compared to the Northern hemisphere, but shame on them for letting the Bok fans miss what was a fantastic spectacle. Well done Bok players, Mallett, Solomons and everybody involved with the BaaBaas today

  • Patrick Hoppe - 2009-12-06 02:59

Dont feel alone South Africans, I am an SA citizen living in Aus for the next two years, and they did not advertise a thing here either! All we ever here about is their "footy" cr@p. Hardly ever anything about Rugby Union makes it to the news. The first I heard about it was checking this website out!

  • Boerseun - 2009-12-06 05:58

The upside was ,no Bobby "I can't wait" Skinstad and his fellow jokers with their brainless comments, what a devine delight!!

  • Shrek - 2009-12-06 08:05

I think player 23 should boycott Sasol and Supersport for the rest of this year. Thanks a lot for nothing you guys!

  • paul - 2009-12-06 08:19

Thanx for broadcasting the game supersport. Tossers.

  • Sam - 2009-12-06 08:26

That's superb.....SA salutes all our rugby players who played for the Barbars.....just shows our quality in world rugby.... JUST PITY THE GREAT CHANNEL OF CHAMPIONS DIDN'T COME TO THE PARTY.....when it counts, you always show your true colours..

  • Steve - 2009-12-06 08:40

All PLAYER 23'S - FROM MONDAY AVIOD sasol pumps! They rape us and now want to get away with it. Unfortunately we don't have a dstv alternative, BUT their day is fast comming!

  • Ray Pook - 2009-12-06 09:30

I trust that the Supersport Powers That Be ???????? will at have the common decency (If they know what that means) to offer their subscribers an explanation why the Barbarian/NZ game was not shown. Maybe I could sell their explanation to " Howie do it"" and make a fortune.

  • Collitjies - 2009-12-06 09:45

Have all of you DSTV subscribers not realized yet that YOU all pay for the never ending adverts. Actual games of any importance take up far too much air time. The problem is, as yet DSTV hold a huge monopoly, there is no other satelite channel.

  • Baby Ewing - 2009-12-06 10:30

Well done Nick, you have shown de Villiers how to coach a % Bok side and win using a Bok recipe with tired players and a Barbar side with minimum time together. Thank you for showing the idiot how to do it, however I dought that he will learn the arrogent %^&*#. As for Supersport I have cancelled my subscription and will be viewing our rugby over the net in future.

  • Raven - 2009-12-06 11:21

Habbana and J. Fourie must have thought it was christmas they haven't seen this much ball all year. Ive watched the game here in the uk and it was showing on the bbc (same as sabc) sounds a bit odd the game wasn't shown back home given the amount of saffas in the babas team.

  • Charlie - 2009-12-06 12:18

What a dismal day for the arm chair sporting public. I gave up heavy metal and beers to get back to watch the Barbarians match without for a moment suspecting that Dont Support The Victims deigned it too unimportant to broadcast.

  • Selma - 2009-12-06 12:33

    Just not good enough.

  • Grant - 2009-12-06 13:42

Supersport Sucks! Well done barbarians, pity we had to read about it though. It's about time a decent opposition TV station was formed to get DSTV in line, it's not only the sport that's lagging, it's their general shows that suck too.
