Cape Town - Bryan Habana is South Africa’s favourite sports star, beating the likes of Makhaya Ntini, Teko Modise, Graeme Smith and Morne Steyn to the number one spot in 2009.

South Africans voted the Springbok wing their most popular sports star in the 21st BMI Adult Sporttrack Report, the only totally representative study conducted among adult South Africans and containing analyses across over 40 sports codes.

“The 2009 BMI Adult Sporttrack Report was compiled from a nationally representative sample of over 2000 interviews, and it’s recognized as the major source for information in this industry,” said Johan Grobler, Director of BMI.

While Habana enjoyed the majority support, 2009 PSL Footballer of the Year Modise gave him a strong run for first place.

The Orlando Pirates star, who was recently appointed as McDonald’s ambassador for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, jumped from fifth spot in 2008 to second this year.

Proteas captain Smith moved up the rankings from 13th to seventh, but former number one Ntini is still the country’s most admired cricketer, slotting in at number five.

The country’s number one golfer, Ernie Els, dropped off the list last year, but made a remarkable comeback despite a winless season. The Big Easy took up the number 11 slot to leapfrog Springbok kicking machine Steyn.

Steyn cracked the top 20 for the first time, coming in at number 16.

Overall, the top 20 includes nine football players, four cricketers, two swimmers and one golfer and athlete each.

@CC... FUI... FL and HM have coached together in the past. I believe they will get along just fine. Is the end year tour results not the fault of the coach and his selection policies?
CC12/8/2009 2:14 PM
@Bulla. The so-called "springbulls" were exposed during the year end tour!!! This was just the start of the rot!!! Frans has no clue what a plan B or C is!! He and HM will have a clash due the Frans being the man in charge and HM wanting to be the man in charge. @ Blades. Too true, even FdP wanted out but admitted he stayed for the sake of the Springbok rugby coaches, not the bb's.

Great news, now he can be even more arrogant. Believe me, i use to think he was the s***, till i had a conversation with him in person . Don't believe what you see on TV - he is all about the money !!! Sad Really
me212/8/2009 10:02 AM
WO, so veel soos julle hom haat, is die enigste ligpunt.

@thabizo, get a life you p***. you and julius malema
Blou Bul12/7/2009 9:31 PM
Waar gaan jy heen as jy klaar is met n groot manne se rugby.............................Wp toe.lmimmi.
Bulla12/7/2009 4:02 PM
Sheldon12/7/2009 3:47 PM
@Blades hahahaha. amen blades. hit the nail on the head. you going to stir up a hornets nest though. They are going to come back and say WP do the same. But the fact is more than half of the players in the average WP side are local. In the ave bulls starting team maybe 4 are from there.
Blades12/7/2009 3:33 PM
@Vernon , Bulle etc. You mean WP must buy back their players? If the provinces did buy "back" their players, the Bulle would be playing in the 1st division, thats if they could field a side. FACT: Pretoria voted worst city to visit in the Super 14 tour calender by the players. Thats why you cannot produce your own rugby players, no one wants to live there. I can understand why he is leaving. How many people out there are thinking; "Gosh I hope to end my career or retire to Pretoria!"
Bulla12/7/2009 3:22 PM
Vernon12/7/2009 3:06 PM
...Rassie Erasmus, ...if you want quality players, you must by more Blue Bulls... .....Bryan Habana is not enough...
@Gtr12/7/2009 2:46 PM
sundance12/7/2009 2:27 PM
@thibosa. You really are poor excuse, why don't you pull your head out of your a@# and stop making a irritation of your self. Rather communicate with jelly tot.
QQME12/7/2009 2:04 PM
@Thiboza you stupid, stupid little person.
Gtr12/7/2009 1:42 PM
BS... So, ja, hier gaan ons al weer...
Bok Coach12/7/2009 1:42 PM
Did anyone question the fact , that maybe Div and assistants , gameplan ois not exactly correct ? I mean , if we have a player like Giteau in the squad , who can effect quick intelligent passes , surely Habana and JP will have a better chance at scoring. Lately , when the Boks play ,One can easily see where the ball is going to , and where the player will be intercepted , we need some CLEVER rugby , we need someone with the brains like Giteau. Bryan may have the speed , and technical know how , but in this particular game , i think it was the brains of Giteau that gave him the tries. And I honestly think Lionel Mapoe is a good choice to break that predictability , his definitely a player that the opposition cannot predict. Just my 2cents
PYN VIR DIE BULLE!12/7/2009 1:34 PM
Dis net die stupid spul BB ondersteuners wat nou anti-Habana sal wees omdat hy WP toe skuif.Arme sotte!

To mapale elias. Please convey your message in readable english. What are you actually saying.
Bulla12/7/2009 1:09 PM
.......as WeePee nog so 'n paar Blou Bulle koop, kan hulle dalk begin om bekers te wen.. ..maar hulle kort nog 'n paar Bulle...
BS12/7/2009 12:38 PM
Lekker dag vir julle daar in Pta hoor!! Bwhahahahaha
Adie12/7/2009 12:35 PM
Congrats Bryan! It couldn't happen to a nicer sportsman! I had the pleasure of bumping into Bryan at a shop in Monte Casino and he had all the time in the world to chat to a lady fan of his - very nice, down to earth person - it made my evening!
Leigh12/7/2009 12:07 PM
Att Thiboza: Interesting that all those white people voted 3 black sportsmen into the top five and a soccer player at that at number two. Your comment is childish or just downright stupid.
Worshond12/7/2009 11:36 AM
@headcoach12/7/2009 11:33 AM
You mean not a true reflection of what you and a hand full of bull supporters think!! The rest of SA actually wish him well with his future!!! Get over it, He's gone to what he sees as greener pastures, at least he is still in SA. maybe you should rather leave our shores, you are an emabaressment to the rest of us BB supporters!!!!
headcoach12/7/2009 11:10 AM
this result places a major question mark over this Report...I know that this is not a true reflection of what the general public feel towards Brian. shame....
Mark12/7/2009 11:07 AM
Fair enough.. Who doesn't like Habana? And I suppose if its based purely on votes then nobody can say it's dodgy. Wonder if Beast and Booth were up there..
Thiboza12/7/2009 11:07 AM
I wonder how is that survey representative of the South Africans' views.....SA is 85% African, and the survey will represent the view of all SA if 85% of those respondents were African...but wait, who cares.....just another half-baked survey shoved down our throats purpotting to represent SA...no, the survey was done on white ppl, with some cream at the top made of black ppl....
Reinette12/7/2009 11:06 AM
Great Habana, you deserve it!!! You can always pull a win out of the hat. As a LOYAL Bull I must say I think the pattern of WP rugby will suit you more. Enjoy. You and Joe Pietersen will be a mean team!!!!!!!
bloubul7712/7/2009 11:00 AM
