Kimberley – The Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU) has denied a report that it owes the South African Revenue Service (SARS) around R16m.
The Sunday Times reported at the weekend that the GWRU is up to its knees in debt and may soon have to close their doors.
Griquas chief executive Arni van Rooyen confirmed to Sport24 that an amount is owed to SARS.
“There is no truth that we have debt of R16m. There is an outstanding amount, but we have made arrangements with SARS to settle it. It appears as if someone is out to smear us,” said Van Rooyen.
It is believed that the GWRU’s tax debt is around R3m, which is exclusively VAT. Tax returns were apparently submitted by the union, but no payments made.
Van Rooyen dismissed as nonsense rumours that goods had to be sold to settle the debt and that the union would have to close down because of its financial position.
“There are no financial problems and we are not going to close our doors. Like any other institution we have debt, but it’s not a problem. We are managing it without problems,” Van Rooyen added.
