Ex Wallaby wants Haka banned

Cape Town - Former Wallaby fullback Greg Martin has called for the Haka to be banned because it gives the All Blacks an unfair advantage.

Martin is currently a rugby commentator and pundit and with Fox Sports and according to the station’s website, he made the statement on a programme called “The Rugby Club”.

"They get an unfair physical advantage," said Martin. "The whole game of rugby is about male dominance over another man, and they're there yelling and screaming and threatening and you've got to sit there and go: 'Umm, this'll be finished soon. What's so good about it?"

Martin played nine Tests for Australia and 65 matches for Queensland during his career. The former fullback faced the Haka twice during his time with the Wallabies, but was on the losing side on both occasions.

The Haka is a traditional Maori war dance and several versions are performed by the different indigenous peoples of New Zealand.

The war dance was first performed by a New Zealand rugby team in 1884 and the All Blacks have been performing the dance before every match since 1906.

The New Zealand Basketball, Ice Hockey and Lacrosse teams all perform the Haka.
