England call up Paterson

Dunedin - England on Friday called in Michael Paterson as second row cover for the last week of their New Zealand tour.

The 29-year-old Sale lock was a member of the England training squad last month and started in the pre-tour match against the Barbarians.

New Zealand-born Paterson, who qualifies to play for England through his English grandfather, was visiting family in his native Christchurch when he received the call.

"We wanted some second row cover and with Michael having trained with us leading up to the Barbarians game and knowing our systems it made sense to call on him as he was in Christchurch," coach Stuart Lancaster said.

Paterson is in line for selection to play the Crusaders on Tuesday, a team he represented for three years in the Super 15 competition.

Before heading to England he was was a member of the New Zealand Under-19 World Junior Championship winning team of 2004 and an NZ Under-21 international.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
