EP win provincial u16 title

Queenstown - Eastern Province claimed top honours at the 2011 under 16 Grant Khomo week with a 34-12 victory over the South Western District Eagles in the tournament final.

The Port Elizabeth side were rewarded for their expansive game plan with five tries and flyhalf Theo Stapelberg also kept the scoreboard ticking over by kicking three conversions and one penalty. SWD scored two tries during game, but flyhalf Arno Moolman could only kick conversion.

Eastern Province also finished the tournament as the only unbeaten side after notching up 13-3 and 14-10 victories, against the Golden Lions and Western Province respectively, in their previous games. While losing finalists South Western Districts beat the Blue Bulls 22-10 and KwaZulu Natal 25-8 in their previous games. 

In the other matches played on Thursday, Free State staged a thrilling comeback to defeat the Valke 22-15, the Blue Bulls secured a 38-12 win over the Griffons and the Golden Lions claim a narrow 22-12 victory over Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Western Province, who lost to Eastern Province (14-10) and Free State (11-6) in their first two games in Queenstown, beat the Pumas 19-17 to record their first and only win at the tournament and hosts Border ended the week without a win after suffering consecutive defeats to KwaZulu Natal (33-20), Boland (11-10) and the Golden Lions (23-12).

The Craven Week under 18 tournament will kick-off in at GWK Park in Kimberly next week on Monday 7 July. The SA Schools team as well as the SA Academy team will be announced at the conclusion of the Coca-Cola Under-18 Craven Week.
