Catrakilis to join Kings

2012-08-16 17:51

Cape Town - Western Province flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis will join the Southern Kings at the conclusion of this year's Currie Cup.

Catrakilis, who starts at No 10 for WP against Griquas on Saturday, will relish the chance to join the men from Port Elizabeth - who on Thursday were guaranteed a spot in next year's Super Rugby competition.

SARU announced that the Kings will play in the Southern Hemisphere's premier competition, with the Lions dropping out for at least one year. The bottom team in 2013's competition will then play in a two-legged promotion and relegation series against the Lions.

According to iafrica.com, Catrakilis will join the Eastern Province union in November on a two-year deal.

“I’m very excited to start my journey at the Kings,” he said, adding that he is excited to get an opportunity to finally play Super Rugby.

“Yes, very much so! I’ve been waiting for this opportunity [Super Rugby] for a while.”

He has struggled to crack the nod at Super Rugby level in Cape Town, with Peter Grant, Gary van Aswegen and Burton Francis ahead of him in the pecking order.

Catrakilis, 23, first shot to prominence playing for the University of Cape Town in last year's Varsity Cup.

Province managemint should be hanged at the Gallows!

      jason.children - 2012-08-16 18:31

They cant promise him Super 15 game time, the Kings obviously have! If the Kings are next years tournament whipping boys it could be the worst move he could make!!!

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-16 19:17

Signing a two year deal ?? Isn't that a bit optimistic since they will only be in the S15 competition for 1 year. What will happen to Demetri in the 2nd year?

      foodfor.thought.73 - 2012-08-16 19:23

My understanding was that the kings said they want in so that they can give people of the Eastern Cape also the opportunity to play on that level. Now by getting people from other provinces they are doing exactly the opposite...

      Cliff - 2012-08-17 08:40

Shot on sight , they allow this all the time

      raymond.muller.9828 - 2012-08-17 11:02

Even if the Kings is going to be the wipping boys in Super Rugby, they will still plat against the Lions and if they win them, they will stay up. As simple as that. Bt ek skree WP.

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-17 14:46

tauris, do u honestly think that after a season of no super rugby , loosing their players & loosing their sponsors, that the lions will still be competitive 2 win a promotion relegation match? I think not. BTW its not a automatic swap with the Kings after 2013, its against the last placed SA side.

  • brandewijn.vancoke - 2012-08-16 18:13

welcome... I think he is better than van aswegen and francis. nica addition to the squad.

      jack.bleck - 2012-08-17 06:26

Sad but true...it's a poor move on his part though - the Kings won't play past 2013 and he's signed a two-year deal...

      luke.sportify - 2012-08-18 07:42

@ Jackblack, lets wait and see

  • paul.ramncwana - 2012-08-16 18:39

As fans we need 2 ask WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON. We sell all our exciting youngsters and keep the boring ones. JJ Engelbreight keep Poolman, Hoffman keep Dewaldt, Roux keep Steenkamp, Fenton-Wells keep Jebb. U tell me what the hell.

      Taurus.Blue1 - 2012-08-16 19:19

@paul, for interest sake - JJ is from the Eastern Cape and Quintin Roux from Affies Pta

      paul.ramncwana - 2012-08-16 20:05

For interests sake Danie Poolman is frm PTA

      Cliff - 2012-08-17 08:41

Taurus.Blue1 : But for interests sake , they were playing for Stormers / WP

      raymond.muller.9828 - 2012-08-17 11:05

Ir they young guys can get first Team experience somewhere else and come back stronger and more experienced than wat is wrong with that?

  • Stormerq69 - 2012-08-16 19:14

It doesn't suprise Me at all! Many more Young hougry Talent will be going to The Kings! Nobody will stop them from going! Lets just see what happens with the kings next year

      SeanV1982 - 2012-08-17 16:02

I say that he is just sad that he isn't as good as the others in his position. So the only way he can play at top level is by joining a politically motivated team thats only there because the big boss has his nose so far up the Governments rear end that he smells the roses out their nose

  • deon.fouche.3 - 2012-08-16 19:15

Weer Probeer se rugby unie is beslis die grootste grap na cheeky Watson! Julle moet ontslae raak van daai clowns daar by wie pie!

  • charles.gregory.7906 - 2012-08-16 20:18

Congrats! We wil take you back in 2 years when you are finished losing at e.p and is ready to join the real deal

      mardeo.bezuidenhout - 2012-08-17 14:42

the real deal that hasn't won a cup in 11 years?? what a idiotic comment.

      luke.sportify - 2012-08-18 07:40

EP unbeaten in 8 this season....

  • Stormerq69 - 2012-08-16 20:38

I'll agree with the fact that the top dogs at WP are clowns! They need a huge wake up call and they need it fast! But to say wheter He made a good or bad move? Only time will tell! Being bitter and negative about losing Young talent will get True die hard WP Supporters nowhere! Just wish Him luck with His decision and with His future! And lets worry about Our beloved Team!

      francois.smith.7 - 2012-08-17 06:06

If he was colored, he would have had a bigger contract than WP was willing to offer Pollard.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-08-17 11:43

i can't understand how he is second choice to van aswegen. his defensive play better , his kicking better both for poles and strategic and he level headed when it comes to read of play. its a loss for us to lose him but same as sadie rather play at a union to get more exposure than warm the bench . this is a big loss like Louw.

  • done.louw - 2012-08-16 21:25

    Bring on my seoson tickets!

  • jovan.daniels.7 - 2012-08-17 08:04

I would really like to know how much the kings paid him, the contract???

  • dssteyn - 2012-08-17 08:14

A loss to Province, but he'll be back...

  • dewald.botha.50 - 2012-08-17 09:03

At least they will now get 3 points for obstruction at the kick off!!!!

  • robert.prideaux.1 - 2012-08-17 11:29

One of the most up and coming flyhalves in SA . Welcome to to the Kings

  • johan.vandeventer.58 - 2012-08-17 12:06

What a sad day for WP rugby, they have lost a gem and a very talented flyhalf, i dont blame him for leaving wp, he was treated so badly by the union, having to take a back seat for a has been like Burton Francis...WP loss and EP KINGS GAIN!! all the best guys

  • SeanV1982 - 2012-08-17 15:59

This is Pathetic. I also want to play Super Rugby. Should I also join the Kings because I'm not making it to Provincial level with the Lions??????

      luke.sportify - 2012-08-18 07:41

      he plays for WP....

  • luke.sportify - 2012-08-18 07:39
